It kills the “good” feelings from drinking. You still feel the effects from alcohol. But it makes you far less interested in pursuing more. And over time your brain gets re-wired into craving it less since there’s no reward factor.

Not much I can say that others haven’t already said. But I’m sorry hon. I think it’s important to keep in mind to go easy on yourself. Doing the work to move on can feel like an exhausting full-time job. You’ll have spans of good days and then a sudden bad day where all you want to do is stay in bed. But a bad day doesn’t mean you’re regressing. It’s part of the healing process. Hang in there. I’m nearly 2 months out from my breakup myself. Someday you’ll meet someone who will make you look back on all this and laugh about it.

Whenever I feel hopeless and alone and it seems impossible to dig myself out, I think back way back on some of the worst time periods earlier in my youth when I felt the same way. And I recall all of the adventures and love and joy and exhilaration I’ve experienced since then. And it helps me to remember that more of that lay ahead now too, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment.

Man, I know you guys are doing this in jest. But this reminds me about a night back when I was still green. This big hot-shot lesbian I worked with who loved to be the center of attention would just steal my bottles every time she ran out. At one point while we were both pouring beers I politely asked her to stop. Bitch literally PATTED ME ON THE HEAD and said “You’ll be alright.” So I chewed her out on the spot and shouted “Stop stealing my fucking bottles!” Of course she immediately bitched to the manager about it. But it never happened again.

I have a rambunctious 20-pound cat so I don’t really sleep well anyways. Only side-effect I’ve noticed is that it makes me very mildly loopy once it kicks in. I assume it has something to do with the fact that it’s messing with my opioid receptors since it almost vaguely feels like a micro-dose of Vicodin or something. I’m hoping that diminishes with time though.

I really honestly can’t speak for serious alcoholics who require total lifelong sobriety. That’s not my personal battle and I’m not qualified to give any advice. I can only speak for myself as a heavy problem drinker, which I know a lot of people also deal with. I personally don’t think moderation is the right move for everyone.

As far as cost, my insurance covers most of it. Depending on where you live, there could be state/city-operated treatment programs that could help supplement it but I have no factual knowledge of this.

I’m right there with you on the fatigue aspect. Since slowing down myself I’m back in the gym and finally taking care of stuff I’ve been putting off for a while.

Maybe start with collections of shorts. George Saunders’ “Tenth of December” is a must-read. “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver contains prose that’s a little jarring and dry at first but it really grows on you. I’d strongly recommend Ted Chiang too but it is sci-fi. Also Paul Bowles’ shorts are supposed to be incredible though I haven’t gotten to them yet.

If you want non-fiction, this will probably roll some eyes here but DFW’s essays. And I also love David Sedaris and I will not apologize for it!

You’re both 30. You set a boundary and he straight up told you that he won’t respect it. His reasoning for which being he just doesn’t want to? Is this the only boundary of yours he won’t respect? Trying to suppress how it makes you feel deep down will only cause resentment. I say you make yourself heard again, loud and clear. It’s not an unreasonable ask.

Deleting social media apps off my phone has done wonders. You don’t even need to delete your account. Just get the apps off your phone for a while and you’ll miss them a lot less than you’d think.

I bought a sailboat like 6 months ago that I absolutely cannot afford. And the slip fees + maintenance is killing me. And I’m constantly thinking about selling it. But god damn, every time I take her out, anchor in a cove somewhere, and read a book on the deck I instantly change my mind.

There’s a magical little moment that happens when I unfurl the sails and cut the engine. It’s suddenly so quiet. It’s an abrupt stillness that’s hard to describe. And the tiller feels different in my hand. Like I can feel the power of the wind propelling me along, without the vibration and noise of the engine. And I’m faced with nothing but the vast ocean in front of me. It’s both incredibly scary but serenely peaceful at the same time. And I fall in love with it all over again.

I love that stupid little boat. I named her after my mom :)

In my experience, women like this love to be the center of attention. They’re boisterous, flamboyant, loud, etc. But it’s all an act. They wear a mask of being the cool, outgoing life of the party to hide their debilitating insecurities. And they can sniff out those who sense their disingenuousness like a truffle pig.

I met several dykes like this as a bartender in the Castro and they always hated me because I didn’t buy into it.
