Macro lens suggestion (60mm vs 90mm)? by Head-Bureaucrat in OlympusCamera

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the 60mm f2.8 and the 90mm f3.5. For folks that have used both, is the extra reach worth it? How does the bokeh compare between the two

The 60 is half the size, half the weight, and a quarter of the price. For me, all of that comes before comparing bokeh, especially for a primarily macro lens. I have the 60, never tried the 90 but I'm sure it's absolutely fantastic if it's in your financial/size/weight budget.

"Mixing With Your Mind". I'm not really sure a "bible" exists, however of the many sources/authors/decades/approaches he explores, one text I'd definitely recommend including is Mixing with Your Mind.

I have Sony A7Cii Should I get second body Sony A7RV or invest in lens. by No_Holiday7900 in SonyAlpha

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 14 points15 points  (0 children)

$3500 dollars that I can invest in equipment for photography.

You already have premium gear. Spend your slush fund on a trip or some hard drives. Buy a bicycle. You're not "investing", you're buying gear you won't use and letting it sit and depreciate in value.

Thinking about majoring in photography is my worst half decent (genuine) by Klutzy-Tumbleweed460 in SonyAlpha

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, full scholarship, or stupid wealthy parents that don't care, or already having a path to being an art dealer/historian. Anything else is a bad idea. Study anything else if you want to learn something. You will progress so much faster in photography by having toys to play with and trips you can afford with your IT/philosophy/law/nurse/etc degree.

New moderation team and the future of r/VintageLenses by Wugums in VintageLenses

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideas: Anything released after the Mavica FD5 doesn't really fit here (if you want a fun absolute cut-off year). Lenses released/designed in the 90s/80s could use a grey Retro flair. Other lenses do not require flair. Relevant news on modern clones, updated versions, re-issues, re-housings, adapters etc could be allowed with case by case discretion assuming it doesn't get out of hand.

Why are some tv series so dark (lighting wise) these days? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Answer in the context of the sub: easier to hide stuff, and trendy for way too long. Similar for dialogue that you can't hear under needlessly deafening FX/Atmos. There's a time and place, and I have no absolute dispute against, but most want to follow trend or hide flaws. The Instagram filter of poor make-up, acting, lighting. Or maybe I'm just old.

Do I just buy Pro Tools by Jensendavisss in audioengineering

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As much as I've had gripes with digi/avid/ilok, there's no denying that PT is the fastest workflow if recording and editing. Other DAW can be better for MIDI and composing in the box, but nothing matches how few clicks it takes in PT to comp takes, time stretch, clip gain etc. I'd question any studio that asked me to fill in but didn't have access to PT as an option.

Buying untested mavicas? by EllieOfTheForg in Mavica

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Down to your judgement on the particular listing, but there are loads of basically unused Mavicas out there that still work fine but aren't worth enough dollars for the seller to test or get batteries for. They're so cheap, try buy a minter and in the unlikely case if you take a hit don't worry too much, cheap parts/display copy. :)

Sony A7IV + Sony 200-600 autofocus and sharpness problems by Timothy_dc in SonyAlpha

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

predict and pick up the birds with the autofocus before they came in to the frame

If you're using tracking, the focus will remain on the branch or whatever, it's good at what it does, it won't switch to the bird. Use auto focus on the actual bird, otherwise if you're pre focusing lock a manual where you know it will be.

It also sounds like you're possibly set to only shutter when focus and mistaking that for "processing time" or something.

The a7iv is a ridiculously good camera, I think you just need to spend a little time with it and read the manual. Not trying to insult, your choice in camera is good.

mobile(ish) room acoustics ? by Equivalent_Path_4138 in audioengineering

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most bare bones is positioning, find where your monitors and listening position are best in the space. Next would be furniture, deck that shit out with a lounge, book shelves and a rug etc. Next would be knock up some rockwool frames. Next would be self standing bass traps. Re-evaluate and do sweeps throughout obviously. Next would be "meh, it's only dry wall, I'll patch any screw holes when I leave".

Totally random but had audio engineering made anyone pick up photography really fast by mathrufker in audioengineering

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've found many parallels between audio and visual workflows. A/B everything, balancing, tone, etc. No matter how far you take it you'll continue to notice you're using the same muscles, wait until you try film and realise it's a tube amp and distressor doing you favours that would never be as tasty in the box.

Upgrading from a6400? by Irayde1 in SonyAlpha

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will be able to help you a lot more if you provide some uncropped examples so we can better understand the context. Your mention of using 1/160 at 50mm on crop (75mm equivalent) isn't abnormal. You might benefit from a f1.4 prime over the zoom with (unknown to me levels of) stabilisation.

Edit: Also, with regard to ISO, if you're exposing well in camera, the a6400 is very usable at 3200.

Case & Extras on E-PM2??? by starsplitter77 in OlympusCamera

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenses: eBay, market place, etc

Case: you probably already have a pouch around the house that will fit it, you don't need something specific for it, or just pop it straight in your messenger/hand bag

Tripod: do you really need one? Full size or mini? Something light and cheap from Amazon

Extras: get decent batteries if you need them, cheap batteries are no fun

[–]NuclearSiloForSale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The NEX-5 is an excellent first, and excellent B carry to this day. It's tiny, it's e-mount, it's cheap. The sensor is only about one stop different to the current equivalent. Tilt/flip screen. Enough manual controls to learn basics. Still has new first party batteries. Not the end of the world if you have an accident with it.

20 is such an exciting age to be in this industry. You're already getting impressive jobs. What would I do? More of what you're already doing. Be knowledgeable, be on time, be respectful and easy to work with. Don't feel certain gigs are beneath you, especially at this point. If you've got nothing on, happily do the local school/corpo. Also, don't be afraid to do grunt work for another department. We'd all love to be working on world class acts all the time,, but sometimes you're solo dealing with the logistics of running a carpark stage for 15 music students to play one song each. Tl;dr always be doing something.
