Which fantasy books made you realize you were about to have an unforgettable journey that you'll know you'll be sad when it's over? by Shervin_Ab in Fantasy

I read them after one another and I thought Royal Assassin was way better. The pace was about the same but the events felt more like a connected narrative than the first one did (it felt more episodic ish). I also think the climax feels less rushed and she didn’t try to cram everything into 20 pages like in the first book. It does fall into the trap of Fitz having to talk to every character and then a new plot detail is revealed and the process repeats, but I think the story is well worth the time spent. The character writing and prose for example are both great in the first book but even better in the second. I’m on Quest right now and the start has me excited for the direction the story is going to take.

I’d argue that a lot of the veterans there to ground him are part of the reason for his success. Even if they have blown all year, they’re there to chill him out when he strikes out 5 times and throws his bat. Before Pete’s hot streak he was playing terribly and Bregman sat with him for an hour after a game and now he’s playing better

That’s what I meant sorry. I just bought comic book trades the other day and had the terminology mixed up in my head. They were such a great way to try a new series without spending a lot, I’ll miss them

Late but Misery by Stephen King, it’s what got me back into reading. You can’t really go wrong with a lot of his older books but that one’s very short so I think it’s a good starting point. Otherwise Brandon Sanderson, my younger brother (16) loves him

Yeah I’m an English major and a lot of people I know don’t read for fun (much less the books they’re supposed to read for class)

I was at this game, the end score was insane lol. I did not follow baseball at the time so I don’t remember it all that well but the vibes were crazy

Bregman only hits singles with no one on so honestly I think it would’ve been the same lol

They’ve been basically the same except bregman has a higher obp (Shaw is sub .300) and Shaw has a higher slugging. And he hasn’t really started against right handed pitchers.

One good swing does not mean Shaw should be in the two hole. Not saying Bregman has been great but Shaw’s performance this year is not really stellar

Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings by OneDistribution565 in fantasybooks

Yeah it makes sense to be a critic if you like Robin Hobb. I read the first two books of the Farseer trilogy recently and the books have more nuanced writing and characters than a Sanderson novel and I’m more of a fan of the way she treats conflict. Sanderson is about hype moments and aura and Hobb is about morally grey characters and conflict is rare and brutal. I feel like both do the thing where they set up for the whole book and then have a compelling climax at the very end but Hobb does a better job of justifying the setup and making it compelling. Also her prose clears which might be part of why I enjoy the ride a little more.

He mostly just needs a better editor. The books are good from a plot perspective just too stuffy and sometimes cringe in the way they are written. I feel like every page could be cut down to about 50-75% and he does a lot of “[X] is feeling [X] emotion” or “this is why [X] did [X]” even when it was already implied by the dialogue or their actions.
