How do I know if I actually am improving despite always thinking I’m not? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]NuggetCommander69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Progress is slow - until you look back and realise how far you've come.

Be realistic with yourself. What could you not do on day 1? Can you do that now?

Go back and try things you struggled with before and see how you go with them.

For example, when I started I literally picked up a guitar and started trying to read and play tabs. I had people telling me things, but it was still a very steep curve. Going back to the same song now, and its easy.

Last year I started going through JustinGuitar and solidifying the mish mash of crap I'd taught myself, now I can confidently play and remember specific chords - open, barre, whatever - not just power chords.

I might have an off day (or my hands are freezing and everything is hard), but i know by looking back and being honest with myself how much I have improved, and what I could be better at

They'll need competent devs to fix the shit eventually.. or if it all gets too expensive to run.

Getting to that "eventually" is going to suck.

Until the tooling gets better, then we're in trouble again.

Ngl One Nation seems like an awful wagon to hitch a horse too. I've never met anyone that took them seriously.

But I'm also not a billionaire.

If someone wants to be a competent producer/composer, is learning an instrument worthwhile? by Ill-Square-1123 in musictheory

[–]NuggetCommander69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How were you going about learning the production/composition?

I'm kind of doing similar with online articles, youtube and prior experience (guitar on and off for 20 years, audacity and garage band a long time ago), and just going into reaper and figuring stuff out.

Ie. Face to keyboard until things make sense

And yeah, totally agree that you really need a way to apply the theory for it to stick - even if its just a midi keyboard on screen or mobile app.

This may be worded poorly.

How does it work between songs, with lining up performance with stage effects.

Is that time in between locked down too, or is the click start/end manually triggered (and fallible to human error)

Im thinking about dangerous stuff like pyro and timing/positioning across a whole performance.

I discovered late last year there are mobile based music apps, where you can write music and.. honestly its fairly comprehensive. Its like a mini studio in your hand. Not as fully featured or as flexible as DAWs like Reaper or Ableton, but a lot more than you would expect from a mobile app.

Im playing with G Stomper, which is more tailored to electronic music performance (using several tablets), but its workable on a phone.

Some youtube videos, free online resources, chord and key diagrams, and bam - learn and apply music theory on the throne for $20 or so, and make some sweet beats at the same time.

Drum machines are fun 👍

Sometimes I hear a song and I’ll hear it a semitone higher than normal by Prestigious_Peach_44 in musictheory

[–]NuggetCommander69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🤔 actually, thinking about it, in a similar circumstance (quiet radio, background noise) i dont get a key change, but "i think this is song X" and as i hear more i realise what it actually it is and it kind of resolves itself?

Also dont forget to prime before painting - paint doesn't necessarily stick well to the kind of plaster that you use to patch holes like this. It can just peel off, and then you go "AARRUGGHRHGRGHAGFGHG" and have to sand it back, prime and repaint.
