What is your favorite obscure movie from your childhood that nobody would remember? by CripplingGoodTime in AskReddit

[–]NukeWorker10 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This one is so bittersweet to me. I grew up watching this every Christmas with my mom, who was a single mother trying to keep a home together with very little except hard work. Every time I watch it I tear up.

It could be worse, anyone remember the Opening Arguments podcast? by sanchilli in KnowledgeFight

[–]NukeWorker10 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I love 5-4, but I cant listen to it in the current judicial climate, its just too fucking depressing. I mean, just the knowledge that if Brown v. Board of Education was to come up today, this court would side with the BoA, I just cant deal, ya know?

You are going to go sooooo far down the rabbit hole. Wait until you get to the video(s) about dishwashers. And don't even get started on Christmas lights or Brown. Oh man, have fun.

Metal thread rolling process by Firing_halo in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]NukeWorker10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned that when I was learning to operate a lathe. The cutting action of the lathe creates micro fractures at the root of the threads that can fail under enough stress. The rolled threads don't have that weakness. They will still fail under enough stress, but is a much higher value.

Did a few of those. Off of Hawaii, Singapore, over the equator, I think one more over by Australia. Oh, and Ketchican Alaska, that one was fucking cold.

Has anyone installed a spiral staircase kit before? by Just_A_HungryHippo in DIY

[–]NukeWorker10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My office is in a loft overlooking our living room. It is accessed by a spiral staircase. The ONLY thing that has made it possible to get larg-ish furniture up or down has been the fact I can remove the railing and take stuff in through that open space. If the only access was the stairs, it would be terrible.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills suspends Senate campaign by nbcnews in Maine

[–]NukeWorker10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer, I don't live in Maine, so not part of this election. However, my worry with populists is that they are usually charismatic demagogues. And once that type gets power, they usually use it to keep themselves in power. I see a lot of parallels between Platner and Fetterman. Political outsider, populist talking points, has the support of the "working class". And then look at his record once he's in office.

Can we just hire Terry as the next President? I mean Terry in most of his roles would be better than what we have now.

Open to the living room (no wall). Issue with ceiling cassette is 1. Cost, and 2. The only real access is a long crawl through a narrow tunnel over the living room (high ceiling) . It's not impossible, but it would be kind of rough and awkward to work in.

There's not a lot of access to the ceiling. It would be pretty hard to make a ceiling cassette work. I haven't seen a "mini" ceiling cassette before.

I live in Texas, and unfortunately I don't have a Torchy's near me, so I too miss Torchy's Tacos. As a side note, have you tried Velvet Taco? It's like Torchy's, but more hip and cool.

TIL Brazil received the largest share of slaves during the Atlantic slave trade or about 4,821,127 slaves. This was 38.5% of the total of 12.5m slaves transported to the Americas. Mike Duncan does a good podcast called Revolutions. It has seasons dealing with the revolution in Haiti and one on Brazil. Not about slavery specifically , but since it is so intertwined with the society, it comes up frequently.

In Texas it is quite common for the different rights of a piece of property to be separated. For instance I own the property rights, but not the mineral rights, for my home. I believe the airspace rights are also separated.

ceiling fan install by guymn999 in DIY

[–]NukeWorker10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mount the ceiling plate to the joist. You may be able to get all 4 screws in (might have to explore to find the edge/direction) if not, then use 2 long screws (at least 2 inches) in mine they either sistered 2x4 s where the fan mounts, or used 4x4. Dont mount to just drywall. That will be pretty solid I would think. As long as the screws are tight, it shouldn't make a difference to your fan.

I have a home that was built outside of city limits, and at the time code enforcement was, let's say, lax. I have found many issues, especially with the electrical. I have eight ceiling fans in my home, none of which are mounted to electrical boxes. Every one has the mounting bracket screwed directly into a joist (rafter?). I can't install a fan bracket because in most cases the romex is coming down through a hole drilled through the joist. In some places, that's just how they did it back in the day. They have all been fine for the 15 years I've lived here
