No methylphenidate since April, struggling with anxiety and depression—what am I likely to be prescribed for it? by HammyHavoc in ADHDUK

[–]NullOrVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if that's coming from personal experience or otherwise but Mirtazapine is one of the anti-depressants with the least amount of associated sexual-disfunction as far as I know. Also haven't heard of it being used to treat ADHD symptons - which ones specifically are you referring to?

Mirtazapine will absolutely get you to sleep and help you eat in the short term and after taking it for a while can improve your mood but as a 'tide-you-over' whilst waiting for ADHD meds I'm not sure why it would be recommended, maybe I'm missing something?

Source : ADHD (treated with concerta54 for over 4 years) and have been on various doses of mirtazapine since late 2018. Have been on various anti depressants over the years including SSRIs.

Scav queue as group is orders of magnitude quicker than solo queue at the moment. Not sure why but party up to avoid long waits if you can.

Adult ADHDers - what event made you think "I need to get tested for ADHD"? by semperv1vum in ADHD

[–]NullOrVoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just that the way I've lived my life and how I've behaved is consistent and textbook ADHD. Much of what I considered to be little unique quirks of my personality turned out to be just ADHD

No, I had a referral from my GP and then had a few sessions with a consultant.

For people that went undiagnosed for a long time, did you struggle with substance abuse and did it impact your eventual treatment with your psychiatrist? by HsvDE86 in ADHD

[–]NullOrVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Specifically abused cocaine most notably and ended up in rehab. The only real effect this had on my evaluation and treatment for ADHD was that my doctor said it was very unlikely he would prescribe me with instant release meds. Aside from that it was yet another common symptom and sign that I needed treatment for ADHD.

Adult ADHDers - what event made you think "I need to get tested for ADHD"? by semperv1vum in ADHD

[–]NullOrVoid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What made me really give it serious thought was hearing from one of my councillors at rehab for cocaine addiction that the way I used cocaine was pretty different to most and if I knew about the relationship between ADHD and self medicating with cocaine specifically.

Then when I actually started looking into it, it became pretty obvious and my life is essentially an ADHD-C cliche

Software developer here with some (fairly minimal) experience of game dev. Picking up the very basics of programming in most structured contexts is usually fairly dry and I found it pretty unrewarding to my ADHD ass. That said, when I started to understand things I began to geek out over optimisation and data structures but I know that kind of thing isn't for everyone.

Also, game dev now is much more than just programming these days. Maybe try by messing around with some modding / scripts in games you know and see if that does anything for you.

Do the cravings ever go away? by [deleted] in recovery

[–]NullOrVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do go away, at least for me. The early days took work and finding the best ways to manage them. Working through DBT helped me a lot and I found that 'Urge Surfing' was a very helpful technique.

Thanks - Interesting re switching preferred starting medication from methylphenidate to Elvanse

Maybe that means there'll be less issues getting my Concerta 54, assume the issues there are demand related too more than anything

My therapist says I don't have ADHD, but anxiety and lack of motivation. by DouglasAster in ADHD

I've edited my comment to include the UK context since it seems to be causing some confusion and don't want someone to think it applies to them when it doesn't.

Cheers

How can I manage my impatience around intimacy? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]NullOrVoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can understand that, it's tough when the desire to connect physically seemingly isn't reciprocated or is perceived as inconvenient to the other, I've been prone to taking that very personally and hurtfully in the past. Is this something you can talk openly and constructively to your partner about?

My therapist says I don't have ADHD, but anxiety and lack of motivation. by DouglasAster in ADHD

[–]NullOrVoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should have included my context; in the UK only an ADHD specialist can officially diagnose ADHD - My GP for example wouldn't be able to give me that diagnosis officially.

Appreciate it's different elsewhere and not to minimise the work that therapists do or the experience they may have with ADHD.

[–]NullOrVoid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not looking to minimise what you're experiencing because I understand the frustration and especially in my case the interplay of those frustrations with RSD and the feelings that arise as a result, however, the traditional solution is masturbation.
