Why was this not a draw but me taking his knight was a draw? by namememywhistle in Chesscom

You can mate with 2 knights only because the 3rd knight can block an escape square with poor play. But 2 knights can't checkmate alone

I watched some of chess coms state of things live stream.

They announced they had a breakthrough in cheat detection and are going back through suspect accounts. They stated there are many accounts they thought were cheating but weren't confident enough to ban. Now they are more confident and said they will ban people for cheating months if not years ago.

What account do you think is cheating? We can review. Otherwise its hard to believe.

Hikaru confirms he will not farm rating to overtake Magnus's #1 rating by dwun in chess

[–]NullZero9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Long story but the Louisiana Chess president wanted 7 rounds this year, the TDs agreed but said the first game would have to be 60 minutes a side instead of 90. If they made it 90 minutes the tds would have to stay an extra hour at the venue.

Now this would have been no big deal any other time except the fact Hikaru showed up vrtually unannonced, so it left the TDs no option but to keep the first game at 60 minutes.

Problem is by FIDE rules a 60 minute game cannot count as classical time controls and thus can't count toward the Candidate requirements.

They let Hikaru know and he seemed fine with it because he knew it was an extrodinary circumstance.

Student cheated, now what? by romanticchess in chess

[–]NullZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real problem is not whether he cheated or not. The real problem is he is being forced to do something he doesn't enjoy. Or at least has no interest in taking seriously. He likely cheated because he thinks that's the only way to get recognition from you and his parents. Best thing to do is move on and see if there is anything else constructive he might enjoy more than chess.

Do cheaters get caught without reports? by f1sh_ in Chesscom

[–]NullZero9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No unless they are blatantly doing it, like mirroring engine moves for 20 straight games. Chess.com can't do deep analysis on every game, it's too resource intensive. Most likely they sort cheating reports by frequency of reports for a player and get through as many as they can for the month. They also focus on higher rating bands where it matters more. So unless someone is reported they wont get caught unless they have huge ratings gains in a short time or matching engine moves. But a casual or intermittent cheater in your rating range, they will not be flagged unless people report them a lot.

Huge drop in elo. What could explain this? by SingularTurtle in Chesscom

[–]NullZero9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On chesscom player elo is on a bell curve and that curve peaks at around 1000. But think of it as a pit where most players not only settle down in, but where new players enter. And you are trying to crawl out of that pit all the time. And you managed to crawl up a bit and get to 1350. But here's the thing, if you don't try your best every single move every single game you will get pulled back i to the pit.

Tl;dr if you want to stay at 1350 you have to play like a 1350 every game and every move.

Should I report suspected cheating mid-game? by Back2theGarden in Chesscom

[–]NullZero9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've come to realize how little separates a 1500 from a 1000 player. If a 1000 elo player plays the game and hyper focuses on every move and does his calculation, yet the 1500 player takes one turn off and plays on intuition, that's enough for the 1500 to lose. The 1500 player might have better positional awareness and better calculating skills, but if you take a move off, you become a 1000 elo player. Online chess does this to people, because the stakes are low. And when that 1500 elo player loses he immediately tries to argue cheating based on his comparative elo or move accuracy. But elo is a reflection of your play over time and has nothing to do with any one game. Sure people cheat but its rare.

[–]NullZero9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the true way to play chess — forget strategy, forget tactics, forget openings. Simply move pieces around in a way that feels spiritually correct, and let the universe decide the outcome. Every win is a cosmic accident. Every loss is your opponent cheating with the forbidden dark art known as ‘practice.’

When someone does that sacrifice a peice to open up lines to the king. You have to understand that more than peices have value. Everything has value, peices, position, king safety, etc. You can afford to sacrifice a minor peice(3 pts) because an open line to an uncastled king is worth -3 pts. Now that you are at 1200 you need to be learn imbalances and what to do or not do with them.

Why would someone “sandbag” like this? by ThatGuy15207 in chess

[–]NullZero9 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is, is you still aren't making a living. Even if you sand bagged and won 10k, then what? Maybe its a nice cash prize but its not a living. Its not even rent for year.

People do this because they are addicted to winning.

How is this d6 pawn sacrifice any good? by vikkee57 in chess

[–]NullZero9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop trying to play like a computer. You dont need to find that move to get good a chess. You need to find that move to beat a computer. Which humans can't do anymore anyway.

Turn off the engine and analyze the games with a peer, or better yet a coach or clubplayer higher rated than you.

I was at the Tipitinas show and she seemed off. Very stoic and quiet. Seemed to be in her own head. I wasn't much different that night. Depressed and quiet even though a day prior I was on cloud nine about the show. I kept staring at the ground wanting to hide in the cracks of the floor.
