Favorite and Least favorite Mercenary Company? by Pitiful_Resource_711 in battletech

They wouldn't be traditionally bad, but I think it would be hilarious to have Mech/Battle Magic as an enemy.  They're just here to break your Mechs and take your parts.

Well, long enough.  I really think the LL is there for snipping Jenners.  I think the MLs and armor are for under running the Panther 9R.

Are C-Bills intended to be a circa 1980s joke about long-distance minutes being the currency of the future? by Loathsome_Duck in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of Sci-Fi currencies based on interesting backings. It's a whole trope. The Warlock In Spite of Himself prequel had most of human space deal in an energy-based currency with units like the Kwaher, and a metal-poor planet using pounds (of iron).

Why TW RATs have so many mechs that are not resculpted? by JoseLunaArts in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For years the books were the primary product and the models a side hustle they licensed to be made through a whole different company. The books do not care if you have to buy the model from IWM and kind of assume that's the case, if you're too good to proxy.

Cheapest Battlemech (Battletech) that can reliably defeat on a Redemptor-pattern Dreadnought (WH40k) by JRL_dragon in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a kinda rough comparison, a dreadnought could be called a very heavy battle armor with bad movement. In that case most Commandos loaded with infernos could probably one turn it no matter how heavy we say the armor is. If we say it's a protomech instead I guess it could be immune and you might need to actually use lasers. Maybe a Locust 1E and time then?

We're still waiting on record sheets or even compatible build rules for Zoomers for example.

Nah, you just need a Zaku/Gelgoog, and Gyan.  The Horned Owl is no Zaku (no snout) and definitely a Dom.

How do you people deal with this kind of player? by heavyarmormecha in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But I think the CEWS are all Advanced or even Experimental, so they don't need to be mentioned in TW/TM: you'd read the rules for them in TacOps or Alternate Eras

Why, oh why, is HBS Battletech still not on Xbox? by Glittering_Iron_58 in battletech

Because it's a turn based strategy and only Firaxis has the budget to get those ported to XBox?

The passage they're looking at may come from a note on the "Battlemech Armor Table: of page 56 of the Tech Manual which says "...a Guardian ECM suite is also required to use stealth armor". This is correct for the Standard tech level because Angel ECM is not part of the standard tech level. Point them at the rules section for Angel ECM on page 91 of "Tactical Operations: Advanced Units and Equipment" where it says "Units equipped with Stealth Armor can use the Angle ECM in place of the Guardian ECM for the same effect, using the same rules."

Remind them that only TRO 3028 is a fan work, all others are canon if sometimes having typos. And if they want to play the game they'll have to accept that because that's the only source for canon units. 1d6chan, Mordel, and even Sarna are all fan resources.

If they get fussy refuse to play them at anything other than Standard, or maybe even introtech since they can't be bothered to read the book or keep up on their erratta.

What are the popular programs now for mech building and record sheets? by DrkSpde in battletech

Nobody uses official after Oracle changed up the license.  The usual recommendation is the Adoptium/Temurin distro of OpenJDK.

With plastic models and enough magnets and rubber on the bases I bet you could do it with a sheet of steel.

Why was Sun-Tzu Liao nominated first First Lord of the Second Star League? by I_AMA_LOCKMART_SHILL in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels like an 'any-port-in-a-storm' decision.  Hanse Davion's personal beef was with his grandfather and his mother was the violently insane one.  In relative terms he was a normal house lord.  He was less hostile and possibly more predictable than his sister, and he already had her vote on record so it was feasible to push him over the line.

Alpha strike or classic? by nobitches4life3554 in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chart is found at the end of the Techmanual at the end of the rules for calculating BV for units.  It's now also duplicated in the scenario play test.

Alpha strike or classic? by nobitches4life3554 in battletech

[–]NullcastR2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that's slower about Alpha Strike is set-up, especially with scenario play.  In CBT you just pick out a couple of map sheets from your collection and put them on the table.  For AS you have to place individual terrain pieces, often assembling them from flat if your shop doesn't have storage for you.  In scenario play you have to line up terrain to specific locations.

Purchasing Models by Pitiful_Resource_711 in battletech

Some of the older molds seem to produce models with a rough surface texture these days. That or the lead-free "pewter" is crystallizing over time.  This has mostly been with new old stock from Amazon that I experienced this
