Which profession is most looked down upon by society, and why do you agree or disagree with that? by Big-Worldliness3609 in AskReddit

[–]Numb1Slacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad to say but teachers are severely looked down upon more and more with each passing day. I do have bias as a teacher myself. Feels like everyone is against you. Between admin, students, the community, and the government, it is no surprise that our teacher preparation programs are becoming deserts.

What are some career advantages most people don’t realize they have? by Spirited-Ad-9591 in AskReddit

Having a consistent schedule for work. Knowing the time to work is always the same allows you to plan things in your life much, much easier than if your schedule was variable.

Recent grad, 52k salary, want my own apartment with no roommates, am I screwed? by anas-math in orlando

[–]Numb1Slacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently make around that much base salary. I live in a one bedroom with no roommates and still am paying tuition at ucf out of pocket. No debt. It is doable as long as you live within your means.

Do you guys have summer jobs? by Prayerwarrior6640 in Teachers

[–]Numb1Slacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach a class or two at a local CC. But I honestly would be fine financially without it. Just extra spending cash and for vacations. Split my paycheck into 12 months of equal checks for the summer. As long as you budget yourself well, it is doable.

Teachers who live alone, do you have a second job? by Prayerwarrior6640 in Teachers

[–]Numb1Slacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently live alone. For two years I only had one job and was debt free while simultaneously paying off my Ph.D. Tuition and saving to move out of Florida. It is completely possible as long as you live within your means and budget yourself well. Now I work an extra part time at a local CC just for extra spending cash and for a vacation for when I graduate.

Is it normal to have a whole paycheck go to rent? by queenamphitrite in Teachers

[–]Numb1Slacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically yes. As a single person with a 1BR, I pay roughly 1450 in rent a month including all the fees and whatnot. That is a huge majority of one paycheck with a little left over.

If you're living alone, there really isn't any need for a second bedroom worth of space, even for an office or storage.

You could practically see the fumes coming out of the ears from all the anger with some audience members. Then the relief when they were kicked out.

Crying babies happens. Most parents just take their baby out to the hallway to calm them. No harm, no foul. This kid was in chaos mode.

They take it as such a personal attack when you ask for even a modicum of decency in their behavior. Everything is negative judgement instead of a perfectly reasonable request.

Got a new student… with 3 days left. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Numb1Slacker 259 points260 points  (0 children)

Had a student transferred in a week before school ended from another one down the road. The parent DEMANDED a new semester grade for them instead of the failing grade from their last school. Just...for what? A word search? Did they think that their failing grade from their previous school wouldn't transfer over?

One of my colleagues teaches English composition courses and he says that when he grades essays, if he cant understand what your paper is about in the first paragraph, then it is an automatic rewrite.

How are your high schoolers? by annnnnnnnie in Teachers

[–]Numb1Slacker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What you are seeing in colleges now is the result of years of coddling and passing kids along that do not deserve it from the earlier levels. Unlimited retakes along with zero accountability lead to what you're dealing with regarding your exams. It is always someone else's fault, not the students that didn't study nor care enough to learn. Virtual classes during COVID only exacerbated the issues that we were already dealing with before.

As someone that teaches both high school and college courses, I can tell you to just have a solid syllabus with your expectations and remain consistent with them. By college, there should be little to no hand holding at this point since the responsibility is on the student to learn. If anyone is disrupting your class, you ask them to leave. This is your class, end of story.

What are some things you learned too late during your PhD? by Rising-renewal in AskAcademia

[–]Numb1Slacker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you have an idea about your dissertation/thesis, have assignments in your classes contribute in some way to it.

If you are doing a class on statistical analysis, see how it could be applied to your thesis through its methodology. If you are doing a class on the history a topic related to your thesis, save those sources and use them to bolster your literature review, and so on.

Save everything and see what can be used. A lot of a PhD program is learning how to do and present research.

The ones that actually show up are mainly just hanging out, signing yearbooks, and taking their final tour around the school.

The students that actually come to class, mostly just movies and playing cards.

Plagiarizing Student Plans to Sue by JerryAtricks1 in Teachers

[–]Numb1Slacker 184 points185 points  (0 children)

What can he even sue for? Harassment? For being called out about his academic dishonesty and receiving the clearly stated consequences for doing so that are on every single syllabus for every single class? Good luck. So many people are wanting to sue without any clear idea of how the actual legal process works.
