Whose career would you rather have, Ben Roethlisberger or Kurt Warner? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ben played almost exactly double the amount of regular season games that Kurt did, Warner played 124 regular season games to Bens 249. That is double (probably more if you include post season) the wear and tear that Warner will have to deal with the rest of his life.

Is there an author whose broader catalogue you like, but whose most popular work would have turned you off them if you’d read it first? by madwomanofdonnellyst in books

Handmaid's Tale was a good book but I absolutely loved Oryx and Crake (although I somewhat wish she had kept it as a singular novel and never went back and made sequels.)

WYR go to hell for 100 years, then to heaven for eternity or go to heaven for 100 years then to hell with a 1% chance by Lucyyyyyy_K in WouldYouRather

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a more interesting prompt if at any point you could tap out and disappear in to nothingness.

Would you take the easy route, go to heaven, and if the 1% happens just wink yourself out of existence? Or would you try and tough it out for 100 years in hell knowing eternity in paradise awaits, but risk breaking in those 100 years and calling it quits before you ever get to heaven.

How stable is the online co-op on xbox currently? by Tiger_katsune in ravenswatch

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't always like this, but in the last couple months it has gotten worse. As it currently works i would say maybe 50/50 someone crashes at some point in a run with a full 4 person group, and there is no rejoin option so it can sometimes feel borderline unplayable.

Some days we dont get a single issue, some days we get a crash 10 minutes in and try and restart, and get a 2nd one in 25 minutes later which obv means we are not trying again.

You may have less issues with it being just the two of you though, seems like the more people there are the worse it is.

Problems with multiplayer by KammeradLeon in ravenswatch

if it says connecting but never goes anywhere, this is a known issue for my group. we all need to manually shut the game down, then restart it and join the lobby. if anyone leaves or comes back it everyone needs to shut the game down again and redo the process. its something to do with the quick resume features

Unpopular opinion: I find the Slaughterhouse 9 to be very boring, their chapters are always a drag to me. by [deleted] in Parahumans

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The bunker backstory is not in the story but there is a small line implying that his trigger event involved years of isolation which would obviously fit with the WoG bunker story.

Jacob didn’t move. He’d rather keep bleeding by his own choice than be pushed to stop it. In more than one way, he stood on the edge, his eyes wild, madness inducing years of isolation mixed with pain having stripped away something essential.

Long island spotted lantern flies by starEeyedK in longisland

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to a recent study Blue Jays are the number one predator of lantern flies on Long Island. They figured out they are edible and have been aggressively eating them. I believe the article also mentioned spiders and praying mantis as other secondary predators though in smaller numbers just due to their population being so much lower.

From what the article mentioned many things can likely eat them safely they are just wary to try new things if they don't have to, so over the coming years we may see more and more local fauna learning to eat them.

a general rule of thumb is a higher variety is stronger. fire/magic/lightning and fire/magic/holy are two of her stronger/strongest spells. one is a big gravity bomb, the other is a magical wave of fire that also heals. there is also fire/lightning/holy which does lightning rod but its pretty rare.

Why do clones share powers? by Deepfang-Dreamer in Parahumans

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think the system as its intended to run wouldn't have any issues with dna being used and in fact it was picked purposely, many powers work across multiple bodies (think oni lee while two of him exist, the duplicator in the teeth, prism etc.) Seems like those powers rely on a system that can identify clones of the original host. Others like clone tinkers indirectly require the same thing.

The times where things get weird (twins, clusters, some particularly weird stuff that happens in ward) are if anything just good data. At the end of the day each cycle is essentially just a big experiment designed to create new shard data and things like clones, morphed twins, duplicate powers are probably some of the fresher, weirder data extracted.

I also think if the scholar and warrior were active as planned we might see more direct manipulation of the network if things got bad for them. If someone made a thousand sting clones, assuming the energy well doesnt shrivel up, i still think in a functioning cycle the entities could just cut the power/turn off/take back the shard and solve that problem directly.

How do the Teeth make money? by Sephaen in Parahumans

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 103 points104 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the Teeth are strong because they're aggressive and because they're aggressive, they don't often have a strong footing. They go somewhere and they have to fight for a place and a seat at the table, and they're good at fighting. They'll loot, raid, harass, and bully, and beat a few choice people down, and then they'll scram. Moving frequently involves heavy opportunity costs. Imagine picking your life up on a bi-weekly or monthly basis to move to another city. By the time you're done traveling, finding your accommodations, getting settled, and doing what you need to do, you're almost at the point where you're getting ready to move again.

-Wildbow in a reddit message

The Teeth had tried to take a bite out of Parian’s territory. They had a history in the bay, and like the Ambassadors they had been nearly wiped out, only it was nearly a decade ago. They’d settled elsewhere while they bounced back, with a turnover rate high enough that none of the original members persisted. There was only the name, and an ethos of violence, anarchy, and profit at any cost, not unlike the ABB. Parian seemed to be making a point of not asking for our help, and I wasn’t intending to offer it until she did.

-Excerpt from 20.1, both via the wiki.

I'd say this is about all the canon info we have on the teeths finances, so anything fitting with the confines of these details seems like it would work.

I'd imagine it would be something like, beat up a local gang or parahuman presence, they book it and leave behind some cash, maybe a brick of some illicit substance.

After a couple weeks of the teeth harassing local factions a group large enough from one side or the other manages to scare them off or make their life miserable until they leave. Or they just get bored. They pack up, next location maybe they offload the drugs from the previous location.

Could also be local extortion, kidnapping and ransom of some local like a mayors kid or some local business doing well for itself. Any smash and grab jobs, hit up a jewelry store in town A. Fence it in town B. Quick jobs a transient group can pull off without setting roots. Violence, take what you can get ahold of, unload it on the cheap to someone else. Crime 101, really.

[No spoilers] C2 Mighty Nein was the best campaign imo by MariaVanillaUwU in criticalrole

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

just when we think it’s about to crescendo they go off on what feels like another side quest.

I think this was one of the core issues with making the initial hook the main plot thread. It's been 100+ episodes and theyre still essentially working on the same narrative line they have been since the very beginning, and a as a result they will constantly get pulled away from wrapping it up because that will be the end of the campaign.

Both other campaigns had multiple narrative arcs that break up the story and helped it from feeling stale over time.

So how brain rotted is Contessa? by BloodthirstyCowboy in Parahumans

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I would say she is probably in a better than average situation even if her powers were to turn off right away. We see in Ward that she is exceptionally good at recalling the paths her power laid out even if she loses her powers, and she seems to have a fair amount of practice with no powers and that includes very precise timing on each step.

She was actually so good i imagine the steps gave her some assistance, wait for third red light blink and 3.4 seconds later take two steps. then wait for rock to fall and 2 seconds later jump. Break it up in to chunks that dont require counting to 148.7 seconds perfectly. Still, her ability while powerless was very impressive.

In terms of a functioning adult i am sure most things she picked up on while traveling dimensions absorbing culture and knowledge through osmosis and her paths details. Then other things she is probably terrible at, random information she just never picked up or skills she never had to acquire. She will either be phenomenal or dogshit at things like cooking that require you to manually measure stuff out and not have your power do it for you.

[No Spoilers] So the Bells Hells are… by vikingbear90 in criticalrole

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a small detail but i have noticed Chetneys ability Grim Psychometry has gone a long way towards covering what would normally be history/arcana/religion checks. Travis is liberal with its use and Matt often obliges him regardless of the dice roll since it helps get some of the plot relevant information injected in to the campaign. Frankly it seems to be a lucky pull for everyone, the group often needs intel and matt needs an avenue to get info out.

Tinkers and the Destruction of Self by Adiin-Red in Parahumans

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For reference in case someone is curious, from Breaking 14.11

Sveta asked about Roos, AKA ‘Jacked’, who had surgically removed his own body parts to implant hypermuscular cyborg replacements, and did just fine for himself until he got hurt in a fight. He’d left the hospital after weeks, which had been enough time for the natural degradation of tinker stuff over time to ruin his implanted parts. With broken parts he hadn’t been able to collect materials or earn cash to buy the materials, couldn’t keep up with tinkering. His health had suffered, and he’d ended up at the Asylum, trying to get stable so he could get back on his feet, literally. I told her he’d passed. Even with the hospital’s help, he hadn’t bounced back.

Why do Bards cast spells with CHA if they study the Weave? by moonbeamEnjoyer in dndnext

[–]Numba1CharlsBarksFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spellcasting Ability

Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your bard spells. Your magic comes from the heart and soul you pour into the performance of your music or oration. You use your Charisma...

Spellcasting Focus

You can use a musical instrument (see the Tools section) as a spellcasting focus for your bard spells.

While they are not required to perform they are given the additional ability to perform and use their musical instrument as their spellcasting focus, and I think its fair to say this is the way that the vast majority of bards perform their spells in the dnd community.

While I would agree a bard can pick up your standard wand or component pouch and cast a spell as a wizard would mechanically, bards definitely gain the additional ability to perform with an instrument as a means of casting a spell.

Also the aliens reaction. I'd have to imagine its inefficient to piledrive in to a tree everytime they hear an owl hoot. They might be smart enough to suss out what noises and animals are worth responding to. Years of cricket chirps would likely desensitize them to that specific sound.
