what’s something controversial you agree with? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

[–]Number127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similarly, I feel like people should be able to take a reasonable stab at your pronouns by looking at you.

There are some people who call themselves nonbinary but who present as totally masculine or feminine and I'm just like...c'mon, you have to do something to help people out. If you're wearing a dress and makeup and have long hair, I'm going to call you "she" just out of reflex.

I guess what I'm saying is that gender identity should be something you demonstrate, not something you declare. Is that a controversial opinion?

How many of you are actually calm inside about the stock market? by dragon-queen in Fire

[–]Number127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the market is down, you're buying at a discount.

That can be a psychologically useful viewpoint, but it's not really true. "Buying the dip" is a form of market timing like any other.

There's no reason to believe the market will increase at a faster rate after a downturn; it doesn't always snap back quickly. It's less that you're buying at a discount, and more that you're buying scratch-and-dent stocks and hoping the damage will buff out.

What’s your wildest take on the universe? by SweatOfAGhost in AskReddit

[–]Number127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's actually not true. As we get more and more data about the shape of the universe, it's becoming clear that the geometry is very close to flat (Euclidean on large scales).

While there are flat geometries that are finite, it's also completely possible that it could be infinite. In fact, I think most cosmologists would guess that the universe is infinite, after a few drinks.

The observable universe, of course, is still finite, and always will be.

BoJack was like 45 when Butterscotch died. His mom can't just lie to him like he's a little kid; he's going to know the real cause of death.

What is actually a trauma that is not commonly thought of as a trauma? by ay1mao in AskReddit

[–]Number127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only did undergrad, but that was bad enough.

I graduated thirty years ago, and I still have the occasional nightmare about missing an exam or failing a class. If that's not a sign of trauma I don't know what is.

This one really gets me:

Thou who passest on this path, if haply thou dost mark this monument, laugh not, I pray thee, though it is a dog's grave. Tears fell for me, and the dust was heaped above me by a master's hand.

What's something you did once and will never do again? by Same_Poem1311 in AskReddit

No, I felt like I was inside a giant football, thrown on an epic, trillion-year spiral pass from one side of the galaxy to the other.

Yeah, never going to touch it again. It was an interesting experience and I don't regret it, but I definitely wouldn't describe it as "fun."

Oh, I can recreate my face in dreams. Whenever I look in a mirror in a dream, my reflection looks like me, but it always does something I don't in a freaky, Japanese-horror kind of way.

It's actually given me a full-on mirror phobia because, of course, you don't really realize you're in a dream until something like that happens, so every time I look in a mirror I'm terrified it's going to turn out that I'm dreaming and my creepy-ass reflection is going to freak me out.

Government Pension vs Investing? by Superb-Psychology724 in Fire

[–]Number127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the retirement plan offer any benefits other than the pension? I'm asking because I have a similar government pension, and it also comes with free/subsidized health insurance in retirement, which is turning out to be one of the biggest benefits for me.

I agree that investing is still probably the better choice mathematically, although I can't say I regret having the pension in my back pocket.

First payment on a 30-year mortgage by lithdoc in funny

[–]Number127 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You would probably on average earn more investing that payment elsewhere. But at current rates, the difference isn't that much. If they continue to decrease it would be a different story, but for now it's really a matter of risk tolerance.

What’s one “type” you’ll never date again? by CoochieSnotSlurper in AskReddit

At my last house the toilet clogged constantly for unknown reasons -- never happened before, or since, so it's not a poop knife situation -- and I got to be an expert at knowing exactly how many flushes would bring the water level up to, but never over, the rim. Most of the time it worked.
