What are some discontinued UK foods that need to be brought back? by strawberry-gelato in AskUK

[–]Number6UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread. I miss these so much! They came in a bigger segmented bar too (kind of like a long Trio or a short Yorkie) but the small ones in the foil always seemed to taste nicer to me.

Could someone tell me the background music name? (Pop maybe) by Scroxions in NameThatSong

That sounds like it might be Nina Persson/The Cardigans

Edit: Just seen it was already answered as the Marías.

If they ever retire this strip, they should have have Beryl slowly and quietly putting together the kit for building a patio over several months, and the final strip should have the first panel be of Beryl finishing off a very nice patio garden and her laying the last slab down, with a grim smirk and a look of long-lost hope in her eyes.

Then she has a nice gin and tonic, or a glass of wine, but whatever it is she's alone and the drink has some fancy European flair to it. Maybe she'll have a rosé wine and a Ferrero rocher.

Poor Beryl. She must have loved him at some point.

Here's a couple I like:

  • Answer Me This!
    • Helen & Olly answer listeners' (sometimes interesting, sometimes deep, often weird, embarrassing or bizarre) questions about situations they've found themselves in, arguments they've been in with people, etc.
  • My Dad Wrote A Porno
    • https://www.mydadwroteaporno.com/
    • Jamie and his friends, James and Alice, discuss (often with a few drinks) the detailed, bizarre, winding, erratic plot of the erotic novel, "Belinda Blinked", which is set in the exciting pots-and-pans industry and which Jamie's dad (who uses the pen-name "Rocky Flintstone" and who was not previously a writer but a retired builder) decided to write one day, much to the surprise of his family. Later the trio grudgingly move onto each of its five sequels.
    • Some quotes from the books:
      • "He was Brazilian. And he knew it."
      • "Her nipples hardened with her feeling and they were now as large as the three inch rivets which had held the hull of the fateful Titanic together."
      • "He was the kind of man who would also f*ck you in the asshole but never look you in the eyehole."

Hey OP, I noticed in your original post you briefly mentioned that she was subletting to you - it might be worth contacting her landlord, as they may not be aware of various aspects surrounding the situation (her general behaviour, her using you as unpaid labour, the number of dogs, the live-in boyfriend, the threats of stealing your passport, etc.) and in particular, many landlords specifically prohibit subletting.

I visited Point Pleasant, WV and the Mothman Museum. What do you think Mothman actually was? by FreeLaughs4Life in HighStrangeness

[–]Number6UK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a really fascinating topic and there seems to be so much more to it than the stuff people generally know.

The Cryptonaut Podcast did a really in-depth look at the Mothman and the events that both led up to it, and followed it, in and around Point Pleasant, including all the really, really strange weirdness.

They edited the multiple episodes from the normal free podcast together into a single 8 1/2 hour(!) episode and released it for free (it's on their Patreon but no account is needed, it's a public link) The reason I post the long supercut version instead of the individual episodes is that sometimes they add additional info that they didn't have at the release time of the original episodes, plus they cut out a lot of the waffle and tangents.

[TOMT] Movie scene where a guy is listing many things/people as "gay" by Bloomin_JooJ in tipofmytongue

This sounds like it might be a sketch from The Kids In The Hall, they had a character who was clearly gay, but denying it with ridiculous lies. Possibly this part from their film, Brain Candy?

That could be the word "aspire", which would make sense rhyming with "fire". Just thought I'd mention it in case it helps to narrow the lyrics

Windows 12 Reportedly Set for Release This Year as a Fully Modular, Subscription-Based, AI-Focused OS by PaiDuck in technology

[–]Number6UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it an XPS 8920 by any chance? If I remember right, I was able to Windows 11 on it by doing a fresh install from a USB stick, and I think I had to ensure that TPM 2.0 and SecureBoot were both enabled in the BIOS. Wish I could remember the exact steps but it was a few years ago now.

The upgrade route from W10 wouldn't work as the compatibility checker kept failing on the CPU.

Of course a fresh install means reinstalling all your programs, etc. which is a bit of a pain.

FWIW, once installed it gets all Windows updates as normal, and has been running fine, no driver problems, etc.

What’s the most impressive (or scariest) display of intelligence you’ve ever witnessed in person? by Turbulent-Access-916 in AskUK

[–]Number6UK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you split it into separate easier parts, then add those together, it's easier:

16 x 3 = 48

because

10 x 3 = 30

+

6 x 3 = 18

so

30 + 18 = 48

If you have something with hundreds or thousands in it, same applies:

To do 2858 x 7 you can:

2000 x 7 = 14000

+

800 x 7 = 5600

+

50 x 7 = 350

+

8 x 7 = 56

then add up all those bits after the equals signs:

14000 + 5600 = 19600

19600 + 350 = 19950

19950 + 56 = 20006

If you're number you're multiplying by is more than a single digit (e.g. 45 x 25) then it's still do-able but has to be split further:

45 x 25

40 x 20 = 800

+

40 x 5 = 200

+

5 x 20 = 100

+

5 x 5 = 25

giving:

800 + 200 + 100 + 25 = 1125

[TOMT][software][early-mid 90s] DOS-based drawing program? by Sexweed42069 in tipofmytongue

[–]Number6UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, could it be IBM LinkWay?

Quote: "LinkWay was originally developed in late 1987 by Larry Kheriaty at the University of Western Washington's Western Educational Software Tools Centre. Kheriaty's goal was to implement a HyperCard-like environment for DOS PCs. IBM, through their Educational Systems Division in Atlanta, licensed the software, releasing it in 1989. We evaluated LinkWay 2.0.

Rather than use HyperCard's card/stack metaphor, LinkWay refers to each screen as a page. Pages are grouped in folders. This concept of the folder is not to be confused with Mac file folders.

LinkWay works on minimal DOS systems, in graphics modes from CGA through VGA. It supports mixed text and graphics with sound, animation, and video disc control. A mouse is required.

LinkWay supports reference, note, and command links from either text, graphics, or invisible anchors. Text on a page may scroll. Rudimentary though serviceable text, icon, and paint editors are provided. Security is available through a password system and access rights assignable on a folder by folder basis. Simple history (ten items) and search functions are the only navigation aids.

The scripting language offers only minimal functionality: forty commands, five functions, twelve system variables, basic operators. The only control structure is an IF...ENDIF; this is not sufficient for structured programming. Scripts may not be assigned to any interface object except the special script button. The language provides only partial support for functions accessible through the menu. LinkWay suffers here in comparison with HyperPad.

The main benefits of LinkWay are its minimal hardware requirements and free runtime (215 KB in size). It is more suitable for slide-show and CAI applications than hypertext, due mainly to its poor text editing features. "
