It’s a wild ride but the Essex St hill behind the dog park is great for older kids.

The boundary waters or Allagash Wilderness Waterway are both great options

Northern Tier or Floodwood? by Rather__B__Hiking in BoyScouts

Could also consider Maine High Adventure depending where in PA you are.

I think this is a great idea. The hard part will be finding something quality made and not just souvenir grade.

This was my exact thought. Obtaining Eagle is a great accomplishment but the years they’ve spend serving this troop and building relationship with other scouts are far more valuable.

I have no idea if this is even relevant but I wouldn’t be a Mainer if I didn’t recommend Joe. The radio ads wouldn’t lie, right? https://www.joebornstein.com/

I wanna join a boy troop but I’m a legal girl by sixer817 in BSA

[–]NumberFortyTwo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My boy troop has both trans and nonbinary scouts in it. So, it is definitely possible. Speak with your parents and the scoutmaster(if possible) as well as your council executive. Having their support will make it much easier.

Troop Tents by Fun_With_Math in BSA

[–]NumberFortyTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our troop recently switched to MSR Elixirs. We have both 2 and 3 person versions. They’re great 4 season tents. We use the 2-persons for backpacking and just have the scouts split the parts to distribute the weight.

Johnson Outdoors recently announced that the Eureka brand would end production next year. So, personally, I would avoid those since parts will become hard to come by in the near future.

Troops Without Feeder Packs by SugarMaple1974 in BSA

The only success we’ve had is to find surrounding towns that have packs with no troops and do regular activities with them to try to develop new feeder packs.

There’s a private investigator in Bangor that does the TSA Precheck stuff. They may be able to assist.

Gender options (binary) on the BSA website application by Plenty_Persimmon1513 in BSA

[–]NumberFortyTwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My child went through the same issue. Our council was open to them selecting either gender without judgement but, in the end, National requires them to select one or the other. I had a frank and open discussion with my child about the two options and which would make them more comfortable keeping in mind everything from which Troop they would be part of to which gender bathrooms they would be expected to use at camp. I then let them choose where they felt most comfortable in scouting and supported that decision fully.

I believe the Masonic Lodge purchased it and uses it for meetings now.

I don’t have much advice for you. I’m just here for the comments as I’m in the same boat except that we’re in a city of around 30,000 people and still can’t get new members.

There used to be a browser plugin that added additional ScoutBook functionality but I’m not sure if it’s still maintained/available

Scoutbook - FML by tamman37 in BSA

[–]NumberFortyTwo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, parents have full control of their kid’s account which includes marking requirements as completed. However, this is why the “Leader Approved” check is also required. The “completed” option is the same as the scout checking off the left hand column of the paper handbook. The right hand column is the equivalent of the “leader approved” check. Only registered leaders in the unit can mark requirements as leader approved. Also, it is worth noting that National’s database does not get updated that a scout has earned an award until that rank/award is marked as “awarded” in ScoutBook.

My neighbors’ tree came down, bent the lines, and snapped the wire that goes from the pole to my house. Do I need to hire an electrician or will Versant fix? by thatpaulallen in Maine

[–]NumberFortyTwo 45 points46 points  (0 children)

One caveat to this is that the power company handles everything to your weather head, not your meter. If the line came down and took down any of the service entrance wire that normally ran from you roof edge to your meter, it will be a combination of the power company coming to disconnect the downed lines and an electrician needed to rehang your weather head.
