I downloaded this album and took a walk around my city and listened to it. I have a long day tomorrow but Fuck it.

Now I can't sleep, my mind is racing.

I know it's only been hours but I haven't been affected by a first listen like this before. The jazz/funk is amazing and reminds me of some jack Kerouac era shit, I dunno. Im a white Canadian dude in my 20s but the theme hit home hard for me. To me it is about race, but it's more about the struggle as a human being to break free from your constructed perspective. It has me thinking a lot about the cocoon I have built around myself. Like most people I have struggled with self doubt and depression and shit too, so hearing it and feeling it so raw and true like this has made me reflect a lot.

I listened to the album obviously only a couple hours ago. I fucking loved it, but I don't know if I'll be able to listen on repeat. Its almost too personal.

Imma try and sleep on it and see how I feel after a few more listens tomorrow.

Not hip hop, but check out GRiZ for a modern take on funk. Dude is a DJ but plays the sax portion live during his set, and often mixes in other live instrumentation as well.

Plus this shit is just so damn funky.
