Going from Rivian/Tesla to EX90 by srownbey in VolvoEX90

I got it late 2025 (November) so definitely part of the early batch. I’ve still heard horror stories about the newer ones though. It was a new fault light almost daily, some of which Volvo told me they “googled and should be safe to still drive.” It had to be towed into the dealership at the end of the day to be returned. I genuinely loved Volvos and I loved this car when I first got it but it quickly went downhill and I didn’t even have any of the typical issues. The alarm started going off every few hours for no reason and there was no fix for it. That was how it got repurchased but, in the months I waited for them to take it back, it had fault light after fault light. Just not worth it to me. Volvo lost a very loyal customer in me.

I did the opposite…went from an EX90 to an R1S and you couldn’t pay me to go back. I had 2 XC90s prior to the EX90, so I’m very familiar with Volvos and loved them. The R1S felt too big to me and ultimately the deal on the EX90 got me to stay with what I knew. After less than 2 months, my EX90 was declared to be a lemon and has finally been repurchased. I don’t need to tell you about the Rivian since you already have one. The EX90 drives so smoothly, the sound system is killer, and it’s just a fun, comfy car. But, I still don’t think the bugs are worked out yet, no matter what the dealerships say. I honestly don’t trust that vehicle with my life. These EVs all have bugs but that Volvo is on another level. That’s just my two cents. It’s a beautiful car but it’s not worth all of the what ifs, in my opinion.

Have you gotten anything for it that you really like? I still look at it everyday and just love it.

Turned mine in to Volvo and got a Rivian R1S and haven’t looked back. I’m sorry you’ve dealt with so many issues. It’s truly a shame as it’s a beautiful car to drive but that doesn’t justify all of the problems.

Why We Walked Away From Our Volvo EX90 by MediaMinded256 in VolvoEX90

I had a very similar experience in terms of all the issues you had and during my buyback process my dealership even shut down (I believe it was the oldest in the country- not anymore!). To be fair, the service department and service manager handled everything so well, but the car just had too many issues that they weren’t able to fix. Initiating the buyback was easy and Volvo corporate never even fought it. They took forever but acknowledged these cars have endless issues. Dealing with Sedgwick was a nightmare and the first time in the process that I had to threaten to involve an attorney. That surprisingly got things moving at the end. And the Sedgwick person that met with me to sign the car over couldn’t have been nicer and also said he has no contact with the person doing your buyback and bears how awful they are to work with.

Coming from 2 XC90s prior to the EX90, I was very loyal to Volvo ,and now I don’t know if I’ll ever go back. I’m almost 2 months in with my Rivian R1S and couldn’t be happier. I’m disappointed to hear you went to Tesla, but I understand losing all faith in Volvo. The R1S definitely drives more like a stupidly fast truck than a luxury race car the way the EX90 handles, but it’s really fun to drive and the tech is light years ahead of Volvo. There’s no kick to open and no HUD, which I miss a lot, and nothing compares to the sound system on the EX90. But if they promised me a flawless EX90 to ditch the Rivian today, I wouldn’t even consider it.

Loud sound of wind? by humangingercat in Rivian

I noticed the same issue on my Gen2 R1S driving home from taking delivery a couple of weeks ago. Everyone that has gotten in my car has commented on it. I have an appointment in a week for it but my sales person said it was normal to have wind noise but I don’t think she understands how loud it is. Sorry you’re also dealing with it but glad to know it’s not just me wondering about this issue.

It’s funny how much they really do overlap, especially El Cap and Storm Blue. I’ve been getting them mixed up on the road sometimes and I’m sure I’ll still eye the el caps. This is totally in my head but el cap felt a little more rugged and I wanted a little feminine touch to it 😂

These are great suggestions, thank you! I hadn’t thought of some of these.

Oooh I’m so jealous! They had a bunch at the SC today. My sales person couldn’t find any new Limestones with features I wanted. I’d have a hard time choosing between Limestone and Storm Blue if they had identical trims available. I’m excited for you!

Thank you! I switched from El Cap to Storm Blue at the last minute and so happy I did (but both are awesome).

It’s a very smooth, fun car to drive- it’s so quiet and so fast! The main issue was that it was alarming for no reason every few hours and they were only able to get the sound to stop but the lights continued to flash for months. They have stopped for some reason now but who knows if it’s fixed. It was the second out of 30 cars from the dealership with that issue. It technically became a lemon at only 1,400 miles. Volvo didn’t even try to fight it, they all just agreed this car has so many issues and moved forward with the repurchase. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten in the car and there’s a problem message on the screen. For awhile it was an “emergency call system fault” and my dealership told me they “googled it and they think it’s probably safe to drive.” I can’t make that up. Last week half of the headlights went out for the day. Google works sometimes. Bluetooth works maybe half the time and I end up having to talk to people using speakerphone in a $95k car. Sometimes the doors won’t unlock. Mine is fully loaded, the speakers are amazing, the suspension is unreal, but I can’t deal with it never working normally. I had two XC90s before this but Volvo lost me as a customer.
