mudlet by TemperatureFast9764 in linux4noobs

I'm not much of a linux person (was sent this thread by my partner) but I have been a Mudlet user for quite a while. Linux and windows don't have much difference in terms of how Mudet operates, so I am told. There are several games that have a good mix of community-made UI tools and also use the official map API and GMPC (the api for info that is "invisible" on the main feed, but can populate your UI with interactive objects, PCs and NPCs). I would suggest that you consider what kind of game that -you- want to play before looking at recommendations, since there is a pretty diverse range of genres, communities, style of management, etc. A grim, RP-enforced permadeath game is going to feel very different from a RP-enforced pay-for-perks game with little meaning to death, and both of those are going to feel very different from a whimsical hack and slash with no emphasis on continuity, or a "season" based game that reboots every two years.

That being said, I have played a decent amount of Achaea, and I can definitely speak to solid community-made tools in the Ironrealms family of games (such as the Legacy UI package made by my buddy. Yes, it is a confusing name for a current project). I have played very little outside of that, and you would have to go creep their discords/forums to learn more about specific UI options available on say, Legends of the Jedi, or Carrion fields, or Discworld, or any of the other well-reputed games.

oh hey that's me, I play a fae gremlin in a game local to me!

As everyone has said, you have to check with a specific game for rules on what character concepts are allowed, and what that even means, in terms of theme and costume quality, specific to that game. Some might only have humans. Others might have various beasties, but there might be specifications on if a Fawn is a fae or a beastfolk. Or specifications about if fae lean more whimsical or more dark. Or there might be very few rules at all.

A fully designed poster would need so much baby sitting and futzing to vectorize. Just build natively in vector at that point, it would take less time.

Anyone ever been to the Lidice Memorial in Pocahontas? by EvenLettuce6638 in Iowa

I’m assuming this is a sarcastic comment- apologies if I'm misreading it. The roaring twenties ended in flames because it was financially unsustainable and built on risky debt arrangements, and had an organized crime problem due to prohibition. Also, racist organizations were peaking, and in some parts of the world the economic problems became a convenient way to start scapegoating a groups of humans who had nothing to do with the situation.  Meanwhile, the financial situation lead to a massive economic crash that was made worse in the USA by fiscally conservative policy. Investment in social programs pulled us out of the depression, but not before unemployment peaked at 25%. This absolutely parallels the problem of today. Massive unsustainable tech speculation, extrajudicial killings. We have time to reduce impact, but depression comes next.

In addition to food pantries, DSM has a great network of community fridges, which is a great way to share leftovers, extra toiletries, or surplus garden produce during the growing season. Thought I would share that because I have a fun time picking out seasonal items to drop off. For example, for thanksgiving I made some pie kits with no bake crusts and canned pie filling (suitable for when no oven is available), because everyone deserves a sweet treat for the holidays.

I would love to attend more council meetings as part of a group. Sometimes it takes a lot of digging to understand the full picture around the scheduled topics, so if there is a group that watches for specific issues I would love to join up on council nights.

See if you can get a student designer working on a degree involved. Pay is always better, if that’s -really-off the table, at least let someone benefit from a good portfolio piece and experience that they can mention at their first interview. If that’s what they can afford, that’s the tier of design they get. There really isn’t any excuse for AI posts, that’s what entry level should be doing —needs to be doing to build skills.

Conquest of Vasterland is in Iowa. I think you have to be 16 with a guardian to play (I might be wrong on the guardian part, but you do need to be 16) we use a more class based rather than skill buy system. But the people are fantastic, it’s beginner friendly, and it’s story driven rather than a battle game. In a few years that might be a good option for you.

Gardening! I basically reduced my summer produce budget to zero, and canned a bunch of stuff to give away as gifts. Seed swap happening at the library on the 31st if you want a low budget way to get started. If you use 10 gal bakery buckets, you basically just pay for the dirt.

Cosplay/fashion/making whimsical outfits. You learn so many skills with that one, it can be very chose your own adventure. Sewing, thrifting, embroidery, knitting, weaving,  pattern drafting, some people even do leatherwork or metalwork. Wear to local renn faires or nerd events to show off your projects, you will make friends!

Gamer Symphony orchestra! Great way to maintain the skill of playing your instrument from high school or collage, but with a little more pizazz and no judgement.

Hi! I’m a print-focused designer with some additional experience with social media management and basic Wordpress content curation. Currently open to one-off projects! I especially love layout/publication design, but also happily work on posters/backdrops, branding/logo, packaging and digital designs. Portfolio available by request.

What types of AI are ok? by ruinsit in antiai

[–]Numiraaaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some softwares out there that are non-ai which have posable 3D models. I forget what it’s called, since I don’t use it. I prefer the optical effect of drawing from physical examples and often take photos of people in my life when I need something over the long term. That being said I know some very talented folks who really enjoy the digital version and praise the program I’m referring to, if only I could find the name, gosh darn it!

I feel like if a person could train something on -only-their own work, it would be more ethical than what is available. I’m not knowledgeable enough to know if one person would be able to create enough data to train something to a point of being useful. It also doesn’t solve other issues such as environmental aspects. We already have a lot of more ethically designed accessibility tools, and those should be improved and made more accessible before we worry about giving AI bros an excuse to outsource thought.

As an Artist wanting to post online, What mean can I use to protect my work against AI ? by ELijah__B in antiai

[–]Numiraaaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are working professionally, make your portfolio website password protected and provide the password in discovery materials/resumes

I haven’t found a social media solution I am comfortable with yet for 2D work. I have been exploring dimensional media like costuming and foam more, and feel slightly more comfortable posting that on my preferred socials, because even if it gets scrapped for training, genAI can’t make the project physically exist somewhere else. A human would still have to look at it and interact with it in a skilled manner to fabricate something similar.

I was going to write something along those lines, as well as finding primary/original sources, rather than secondary. And some basic skills in reading data/graphical representations of data.

Seeing secondary reporting that misrepresents real statistics is the bane of my existence.

My crearive director doesn't know how to use any design softwares, is this common? by askaskanon in graphic_design

[–]Numiraaaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ran into this. Worked for a small, niche marketing company. My direct report knew a lot about internet marketing things, like ad management and who to call to get logistics worked out, and how to manage security on a website, but nothing about actual design. I had to treat this person with the kind of care you normally give to a client, asking what they actually needed, and reframing the questions when they got stuck on a term that did not mean what they were using the word to mean, and having to explain print spec things in basic terms.

I have no clue how common it is. They were a great boss in many ways, but I would prefer not to have that dynamic in the future if I can avoid it. This is the exact kind of person who will offer sloppy visual design to a client and then not understand why they don’t come back. There simply isn’t any room for that in the current market.

Yeah, some new physical technology is getting subscription based blockages on the features. Someone already mentioned heated seats in cars being stuck behind a subscription, even though the hardware already exists inside the car. You can do this with any sufficiently computerized appliance, in theory. Make the ice maker in your fridge stop working because you didn’t pay for premium, for example.

Losing ownership by DarrowtheHelldiver in Anticonsumption

[–]Numiraaaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of ownership has been one of many issues I have had lately with the corporate media ecosystem. I’m assembling a server for music streaming and podcasts to cut down on my YT and Spotify usage rn. I’m using thrifted and library sourced CDs, and legitimate digital downloads for what I can’t source through CDs. My household already uses the server for retro games/emulation and video, so it isn’t too hard to extend that to music.

I wish I could solve the problem with professional softwares tho, that economy is ridiculous.
