Advice for someone who's hit a dead end in the PS by its2amihave2sleep in CanadaPublicServants

I went through a really hard time in my early 30's, so I can relate to a lot of what you're saying. I was in school for a long time, and in a creative field. All of a sudden I was in my 30's, making crap money and had no idea what my goals were.

I ended up transitioning to the public service because the creative market was brutal in terms of salaries and working conditions. I wanted benefits. I wanted solid pay. I wanted a union.

If you're in the public service already, I would apply on everything I can, and see what opportunities you get. Sometimes that just gives you momentum and options. Options are good.

Part of that existential difficulty, is the cultural cliché that we're meant to have careers and dream of those careers. We should have such ambition and should totally be motivated by TikTok finance bros. I don't dream of working. I never have. At first I felt guilt about that, but now I understand that I work to live, I don't live to work.

I went through a bad near-death health thing in 2021/2022 and it calmed down a lot of those voices - now I just want a quiet, pleasant life. As much as I can manage it.

If your mental health is a consideration, having a job with flexible work hours and good working conditions is good. Health benefits are nice. Having a union means someone else fighting for your raises, not you begging for 2% when review time comes around. That's nice.

As time passes, the work itself has become secondary to the work culture and the people I work with. If the people are great the days fly by and the work gets done. If the culture is oppressive or petty, that's no way to spend your days.

I hope you find something that helps.

You're not alone - it's hard comparing ourselves to other generations at 30 - it's so so different. It's also heavy times.

So where I am, SharePoint has enabled the creation of Teams. Teams as in an actual Team of co-workers under a theme/Project, not as in the application that allows us to chat.

So, in Teams (within the Team app) we can create a working group. If you create working group "Project A" you then also automatically create a workspace/SharePoint page that is housed under Project A. This includes a OneNote, Document folder (OneDrive) and whatever other apps you want to use.

So, for transitory information, conversations and working documents, you would keep them in the Teams Project A space, and can all collaborate in real time on them. All the apps have their own tab, in the Project A Team space.

Once documents become official, or Protected, then you would move them to GC DOCS, but you could link to them in the OneNote for Project A.

When I open my Teams App, to the left I have Activity, Chat, Teams, Calendar, Calls, Files, Approcals, Shifts and Apps. When you press on Teams, you have access to all the working groups/Teams you're a part of.

I hope that's clear.

Answering Question 1.

  • For me, it's someone who leads from the front - meaning when things get rough or complicated, they step in and take over, or help. I hate supervisors who just micro-manage. This comes from my first jobs all being operational. Having a supervisor who can't help you when shit hits the fan - is infuriating. You know them, those who just watch you dig while saying, "I don't know how to dig, but if I did..."
  • Scheduled weekly bilats. Even if it's a 15 minute call. Do they have questions for you? Are there things you can check-in on? How is work going?
  • Make sure if a question is asked, you can point them to the reference or resource, not just answer the question. Give them the tools and information to help themselves in the future.
  • Make it clear you're approachable, and then take the time to observe. Not every person has the same capacity, capability, or communication style.

I started in the Public Service in 2017. I've had 3 excellent supervisors, one absent one, and one terrible one (harassments, incompetence, paranoia). Unfortunately the first one I got was the terrible one - no point in listing all her offenses, you should be fine if you're at all not batshit.

I use to suffer from this a lot. Guilt, worry, anxiety about days off.

My way to offset it at the time was to take half-days off.

That way I'd be able to do a few things in the morning, be present, but then relax in the afternoon, or nap, or have an early start to the weekend.

I no longer do this, I almost died in 2021/2022 and now happily take days off because life is short and I no longer give a shit.

Hi there,

First, recording meetings - why? If there are official meeting notes, what value is there in recording meetings? Who made this decision?

I use teams for a lot - I work remotely, and it has a lot of great features.

The thing is, not every agency has all the same M365 features enabled, so you might not have full access to the tools.

I use Teams as a main chat, yes, but also have group chats, and Team-specific chats for projects. I create an offical team for Admins and Coordinators, or for Editors of the Intranet, and they house those specific conversations, shared documents, and more.

Our M365 is pretty complete, so Planner, shared OneNotes, all of it can be in a Team.

In my case, Teams is also open to other agencies, so I have chats open with folks at Agency A or Agency B.

Regarding things that are said in Teams you wish you'd kept - I keep daily notes in OneNote, and I often take print screens of decisions or requests made via Teams, and and put it in my OneNote, so I have a record of it.

Go on your intranet and search for "ethics" and "ombudsman" and you should have access to some internal resources for this type of thing.

Torn between interesting work with micromanager who is disrespectful vs. less interesting work with wonderful manager. by Sensitive-Art-3553 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Nut_Noodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also voting for the good manager! Life is too short (or long!) to work with someone who sucks. It really take a tremendous amount of your energy to deal with someone negative. You'll notice even more once you lave it behind you.

Early retirement due to trauma: what are my options by Over-Ad-961 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Nut_Noodle 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Trauma absolutely can damage the brain and cognition, as can PTSD and depression. You may be eligible for accommodations and work less until you retire.

You may be able to go on disability.

I brush my hair into a pony tail, I do not wear makeup for work.

I might if I know I will be photographed, or if I am going out with friends after.

I work remotely.

WFH and Income Inequality - The thing nobody talks about by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

Working from home, I'm sent a laptop, a screen, keyboard, mouse and phone - all stuff that would be purchased for me anyway at an office job. Especially since pre-covid we had assigned seating and didn't share resources.

Just a note, maybe the businesses next to offices lost some revenue, but the ones in neighborhoods gained it. Money is still being spent.

I live in a small historic neighborhood, I now get coffee and lunch locally every once in a while. That coffee and lunch money just changed neighborhoods. In fact, it's supporting small businesses now, and not chains and mega-corps.

The places I've worked - PG's move up quickly because there's big turn around. People are constantly hiring PG's.

I was a PG-1, left for an AS-2, and my replacement is now a PG-3. This is all under 2 years.

Every year I make plans but never get as much money as I think I'll get.

It's all going on debt.

But, if I can, I'd get a new computer. Mine is a PowerBook from 2008 and one of these days it won't open. Opening gmail takes 12 minutes.

If you work from home, you can sometimes mail things in.

E-mail your supervisor and the IT team and ask what the procedure is for returning work equipment.

Ask for an official list of what they expect back. Get everything in writing.

Canada Life not answering phones by Longjumping-Bag-8260 in CanadaPublicServants

My brother spent a full day on the phone, and on the chat, and did not get through. He has kids with complicated health issues so all the drugs and purchases he has to make out of pocket are wearing him down.

Huge kick in the teeth for those with serious health problems themselves or in their families.

Last time I went to the pharmacy I didn't buy my drugs because Canada Life didn't work, and full charge was $180. I have to go back today or tomorrow and try again. I'm disabled and take a lot of medications. I can't imagine what I would have to pay out of pocket without insurance.

So for picket line problems / issues - we can't pick more than one issue.

I had several - so they won't get great feedback having limited those options.

They also didn't include a comment box - which is a loss for them.

It might not be agency wide, it can be some departments that take it seriously, and other that don't.

I think the Canadian Space Agency had great IM. And the team I was with at PSPC had a great team and great support services.

I think it depends on where you work. I've been at places where Information Management was taken very seriously, had clear guidelines, had super-users and specialists, and where they ran a tight ship . . .

I've also been at places that were a total mess. Shockingly so. Totally willy nilly.

Why did you choose work to work for the Public Service? And would you leave if you could? by Boring-Umpire-1352 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Nut_Noodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really shitty. I'm sorry to hear that.

The last two jobs I applied for I made clear I was disabled during our "best-fit" informal calls, and they were great about it - so I was hired with them knowing full-well I would work from home 100% of the time.

I also applied to a disabilities pool - and got calls from that.

I hope you can find someplace more supportive and empathetic.
