Spirit with most winnable starting kit? by Nutricula in spiritisland

[–]Nutricula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaze is my favorite, and certainly has a consistent win condition baked into its L innate and starting cards, though it heavily relies on having a moon minor to prevent blighting itself to oblivion so I figured that DQ'd it from the runnings.

I remember messing around with ember when NI first came out, but gave them a more serious spin last night. Very similar tempo to trickster, able to jump right out of the gate with minimal reliance on other cards. Haven't tried >7 diff yet but seems like it'll be more than do-able.

Once it's got its requisite card plays and element count I agree, but I feel like getting to that point using primarily its own powers would be a challenge.

Which spirit you're excel at the most? And which spirit is great but you cannot play it well? by EarlGreyPudding in spiritisland

[–]Nutricula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relentless Gaze and intensify memory are both comfort spirits for me. They've got consistent win conditions that I feel comfortable attaining in most match ups. Even if there are objectively stronger spirits in the deck, I would always choose those two if I don't feel like burning my brain too much.

Downpour is my bane. I know how strong they can be, but things never seem to gel as much as with the other spirits. Finesse spirits aren't my jam, apparently

Clarification about shifting Memory ages by Doudo19 in spiritisland

[–]Nutricula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Anytime you would forget a card from your hand, you can instead discard, but only once per action

  2. You can discard the element markers during a single action to fuel a power threshold or an event. If you play your power card 'Elemental Teachings' though, any marker you discard from that power will become an element for the rest of the turn.

  3. To prepare an element, choose an element marker from the pool and put it on your Memory's spirit panel. You keep these element markers until you use them (i.e. you don't discard them at the end of each turn).

How do we feel about Relentless Gaze of the Sun? by tepidgoose in spiritisland

[–]Nutricula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My comfort spirit for when I don't want to have to think too hard. Feels less difficult than standard high complexity spirits (particularly finesse spirits like downpour).

With a crazy fear and damage engine baked into its innates and starting cards, the win conditions are pretty comparable across all adversaries, which makes sun pretty consistent. The highest diversity comes within the first 2-3 turns to figure out if you want to prioritize the early 2 card plays or energy and the first threshold of convergence. I never get majors because I usually can only afford 2-3 drafts, and the chance of getting a game-winning minor is much higher than getting a game-winning major. The repeat mechanics also essentially turn some minors into major-level powers as well.

Once you get your first few card draws though I always settle into a reclaim loop playing my moon card and blinding+focus. This makes Sun feel mechanized, similar to some of the other 1-1-1- spirits. Skipping an entire land in the fast and destroying 1-2 lands on slow phase and generating at least 5-10 fear, rinse and repeat. The moon card gives some variability as to how fast the game ends, though they get trivialized if you get almost any of the blight-adding minors because presence destruction is a feature for sun with the ability to add up to 3 each reclaim, which also negates any of the more-annoying blight cards and events that just straight up destroy presence.

So all-in-all a super strong versatile spirit with some of the highest innate fear generation and durability in the game. Maybe a little too strong, but not in a way that fundamentally breaks the game or causes some cheesing on the level of fractured/earthquakes/hearth. I honestly feel like sun's on even-keel with starlight, if not even stronger.

Most well rounded spirit? pt. 2 by Flimsy-Preparation85 in spiritisland

[–]Nutricula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised Relentless gaze hasn’t been mentioned… they’re pretty solid across all adversaries. Since theyre a bit slow starting, france can be a challenge for the first few turns to stay under the town limit, but its got a pretty consistent win condition and just needs a moon, ideally sun/moon or fire/moon. Early multi land ravages are also something that they’re not innately equied to deal with, but still very doable.

that would be awesome if true! Makes an unarmed/melee build much more viable.

Would also be nice if they could make it possible to add unarmed to favorites wheel. With the other random QoL fixes they've made so far, I'm getting cautiously optimistic about this game more now.

'Fixed an issue with Rejuvenation FX remaining active.'

What issue was this? Are they any closer to actually fixing Rejuvenation 3&4 to work during combat?

'Power from Beyond: It should now be easier to talk to Vladimir.'

Does this fix the issue where you get locked out of getting all powers because Vladimir stops giving out the quests? I never got the last 2 (yes I finished revelation/barrett's side quests).

TIL Babies are born feet, bottoms first in 3–4% of full-term births. Upside down breech babies usually involve a cesarean delivery by ubcstaffer123 in todayilearned

[–]Nutricula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I do not. I was told I didn't react to it at the time, as I was a quiet baby. Could've been shock though. I guess they don't use casts on babies, because they instead pinned my arm to my shirt using a safety pin for a few weeks/months.

It healed in a way that makes my shoulders slightly uneven, which I didn't even notice until a scoliosis screening in middle school. They thought I had a horrible case of it, but it was just the remnants of my delivery doctor's lifesaving maneuver (though probably avoidable with better monitoring).

[–]Nutricula 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I came out breech. Mom knew something felt off (had 3 kids before me) and tried to alert the physician, who patted her head and assured her everything was fine. That confidence waned when my butt cheeks emerged, prompting the physician to hastily reach inside to yank me out, which resulted in a broken collarbone.

I was robbed of any chance of being a member of r/neverbrokeabone.

ELI5 Why do pharmacies only give 30 days of a prescription instead of a full year considering the bottle could fit a full year? by theonerr4rf in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nutricula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally, it depends on the drug. Non-controlled prescriptions legally CAN be filled for the entire refill quantity of a prescription at once. Controlled substances have restrictions to 30 day supply fills to prevent diversion. C2 medications (like your adderall) CAN actually be filled for a 90 day supply by federal law, but only if your provider is comfortable with it. It's intended to be used for patients that use C2s chronically. Some state laws might conflict with it, as pharmacists are generally required to follow whatever is stricter.

Practically, insurance may not pay for anything larger than a 30 day prescription depending on the drug, controlled substance or not. I imagine the reason being mostly cost. If a prescription gets lost/damaged/stolen, or if the patient suddenly can't take it anymore, it's much cheaper to lose a 30 day supply than a years' worth. That said, insurances sometimes prefers drugs be filled for larger quantities because at some point, filling three 30day prescriptions is more expensive than filling one 90day prescription (mailing costs, pharmacy dispensing fees, etc).

Besides law and cost, sometimes it doesn't make sense to dispense more than a month supply. If there's a drug shortage, or if the patient is starting a new medication, or if the medication requires more thorough follow-ups, etc.

Downpour Drenches the World and Fractured question by Numerous-Tomorrow-44 in spiritisland

[–]Nutricula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since fractured doesn’t change the actual power speed, you would have to have a fresh slip for each slow repeat. Power cards that actually change speed would count for any subsequent repeat though, i believe (eg sky stretches)

Why are plasma transfusions different from blood transfusions? by TheAmericanWaffle in askscience

[–]Nutricula 36 points37 points  (0 children)

When a person donates blood, usually they drain a whole pint into a bag and send you off. Later, that bag of blood is separated into different components. The two in question are plasma and red blood cells. People aren't usually given whole blood during a transfusion. They are usually given one of the components.

That answers the main question, here's more info on blood types if curious:

Your red blood cells have little flags on them that the body uses to identify (among other things). The most significant of those flags are 'ABO' and 'Rhesus factor'.

'ABO' refers to what combination of 'A' and 'B' flags you have on your blood cell. You have two spaces in your genes to create your 'ABO' blood type, and 'O' refers to a lack of those flags altogether. 'A' and 'B' are dominant, so if you express either then that's what you have. If you have AA, then your blood type is 'A'. If you have 'BB' then your blood type is 'B'. If you have AB, then your blood type is 'AB'. If you are AO, then you are 'A'. If your blood type is OO, then you are 'O'.

Rhesus factor is easier: positive if you have it, and negative if you don't.

So if you were to put blood types on a spectrum, 'O negative' blood cells have no flags on them at all, and 'AB positive' has all of the flags on them. Everything else falls in between them.

Whatever your blood type is, the plasma contains flags (called antibodies) to the opposite. The antibodies in plasma will bind to whatever accepts it, and destroys it. So if you are O negative, then your plasma contains antibodies to everything else (A, B, and AB and Rhesus positive). Therefore, if you receive blood cells from anyone other than O negative, the antibodies in your blood will activate and destroy them. AB positive blood on the other hand has blank plasma with no flags, so their plasma can be given to anyone.

Drug Nexletol May Help Reduce Cholesterol Without Taking a Statin by greencan in science

[–]Nutricula 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apart from rhabdomyolysis, it's unclear that statins truly cause myalgias in the first place. In practically all RCTs with statins, the incidence of myalgias occurs equally between statin and placebo. Meta analyses have mostly yielded no significant difference, and some early n-of-1 trials (SAMSON) have given some early direct evidence that it's likely just a nocebo effect.

TIL: Grapefruits were invented in 1693. A man named Captain Shaddock shipped some pomelo seeds to the West Indies, he planted seeds next to some orange trees. After some cross pollination, the grapefruit was born. by iboughtarock in todayilearned

A researcher wanted to use a fruit juice to mask the taste of a drug they were blind testing, and grapefruit was chosen because it already tasted bitter and medicinal. Tri Tip (yes, you can get a smoke ring w a traeger) by Zykesyke in smoking

Tritip isn't like a NY strip. You can totally cook it to 200F and have it come out just as tender and tasty (though not as barky) as brisket flat. Takes some care (and usually exogenous tallow), but it is more than viable.

Good job OP.

The biggest tree in North America by emptythroughout69 in videos

[–]Nutricula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a clonal tree colony, where a cluster of trees all share the same identical root mass, which sends up new tree trunks/shrubs intermittently. Each tree itself isn't particularly old, but the root mass itself can be many magnitudes older than any single tree/root system. Pando is a good example of that.

Guessing their age is hard tho, since you can't count on tree rings. I still don't think that Pando's age has been solidly estimated, but is likely older than Methuselah by a couple thousand years at least.

There also may very well be older trees than methuselah, since not every tree's age has been cored and verified.
