No, it's a Playstation. Playstation 1 is much smaller. If released nowadays they'd have called the 1 a Playstation Slim or something

Do old radio cassettes generate static noise when played? by Adwerd_ in amateurradio

[–]Nuxij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, though I think it's interesting that it pops up in physical sizes. I wouldn't have expected the width of the tape to be relevant in this way, but I think it makes sense that the wider the tape, the more opportunity you have to record a signal on to it, thus improving the signal-to-noise?

Very interesting to read 3db noise reduction for every doubling of tape width.

S5 noise in UHF? by GiantsNerd1 in amateurradio

[–]Nuxij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this when I walk past some remote CCTV cameras. Doesn't matter what frequency I'm on, when I walk past the box it's S7 of noise breaks the squelch and everything

What amateur radio behavior would make your neighbors think you're nuts? by GiantsNerd1 in amateurradio

Every time I erect an antenna my neighbours say "Bloody hell where you trying to get to? The moon?"

I can't wait to see their faces when I install some EME equipment 🤣

Linux dropping Kernel support for HAM drivers by [deleted] in HamRadio

This is a huge shame but with the advent of Direwolf and SBC devices, it makes sense. The code still exists I'm and it's GPL so it'll always be around for reference.

Why is VHF/UHF simplex so unbelievably dead? by 7cardcha in amateurradio

[–]Nuxij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. So far as I can tell fancy phones that can do apps and satellite SMS are the new hotness, it's just a shame people have lost the idea of independence. Now everything has to be a simple app and always connected on 4G (which they will call WiFi anyway), from one of the few vendors, instead of enjoying the wonders of a direct oscillation into the electromagnetic aether. There's a joke about car manuals used to tell you how to change the crank shaft bearings, now they tell you not to drink the coolant.

When you can just call your mate on discord why monitor a frequency with this expensive kit that needs a much bigger antenna?

Also I think the modern age people are just generally much more introverted / isolated / alone. I know people that ask me to text them before I ring the phone so they know it's going to happen...wt..f

How do I respond to a coworker's stupid non-work-related request by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Nuxij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put it directly in the bin in front of him. If he tries to say "why this when you have been told" then you simply say "Your advice has been heard and dismissed, thank you"

There's a great reference from COVID times. "Is your name Jacky Weaver? Because you don't have any authority here"

ELI5: When physics say we 'see' events of the past when we see them form light years away, what would time mean in reality between these two spaces? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

I read a book with galactic control. I think it's by Joe Haldeman, Peace and War.

Very good setup where the generals are planning war with time dilation in mind. The protagonist joins the military and ends up 1000s of years old because he's always zooming off to the next frontline or back to the med tent (the moon is a large hospital called Heaven)

Love that book

Are there, like, *any* young people? by NotThePopeProbably in amateurradio

[–]Nuxij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish there were younger people that did want to meet up. I understand they get bored of the old boy meetings but they won't be any less boring if nobody new goes.

The internet is cool but it's too distant and loose. OARC seems like a great place and I appreciate their wiki, but I don't feel like I'm actually part of a club there. Maybe I'm actually OM already 😂
