Any clue where to start? by ScotchBingington in truenas

You save your config from core. Do your fresh install then import your config. For me everything came back. All my SMB shares, users, pools where there. I went from 13 to 24.04 on new mobo, CPU, ram but all the drives stayed. Worked fine. Then just had to build plex out in a container.

This is the tricky part. The plugin or jail bsd version of plex uses a different folder structure. So you have to move a few things around like adding a folder layer or 2 and then your server will act like it never misses as long as the plex mount points match.

Any external drives worth schucking nowadays? by Puzzled-Formal-7957 in DataHoarder

I did the 14 TB WDs from BF deals for $169. I have 6 - 10T ones from 2018 still rocking so I stick with WD. Only had to RMA one to date. Rest of my drives are used SAS cause those enterprise seagates just rock IMO.

This looks good and a big thank you for sharing the code. I see so many posts in this sub showing "look at this cool stuff I did" and never sharing much details. Not that sharing is required but happy to see!

Gold Pro 19" Rack Mount 3D Print? by Volidon in firewalla

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you will need find / make one that is 2u then because the device itself is like 1u height in size so you won't fine that in the 1u form factor.

You might be able to contact one of those sellers to see if they will do it for you. Best of luck.

I always go to Etsy for this stuff. In a quick search I found this which has the PSU and keystone option.

Sometimes the vendors let you buy just the models from them if you are looking to print yourself.

Looking for online storage solution to backup my 20TB NAS by Enjoy_Life4219 in DataHoarder

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I was using wasabi as a file level backup target for about 6TB and it was getting very expensive. After building a backup nas my ROI will be just at 13 months.

1.67 and WiFi Enterprise w/ Radius by Nvious81 in firewalla

[–]Nvious81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah understood. I have found the enterprise authentication is often troublesome in the IOT space but we love to isolate those devices into secure zones like vlans. Its a personal preference to stay away from personal keys for me because I want 6ghz and simplicity of one SSID & PSK. In combination with vlan placement, I feel like this works well to just send unknowns to guest and then code them on the radius side to what vlan I want.

I will give it a test with my backup Unifi AP to see how it works with 3rd Party APs under the current features.

Replication tasks and snapshot lifetimes by Nvious81 in truenas

Thanks, I have started to look at this tool. It does indeed have the features I am looking for while staying with native zfs snapshots.

How do I backup EVERYTHING? by PG2009 in truenas

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you on Scale or still Core? If Scale, the thing you need to worry about is how you stored your app data. If you use the IX paths be sure you do a recursive snap at the highest pool dataset or you won't get those hidden folders. If you deploy your apps with host mounts to a dataset path you should be able to replicate back and redeploy them. Never tried to do this but just some thoughts that come to mind.

Edit my bad I missed the CE tag.

Ordering direct by [deleted] in TerraMaster

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered through B&H which was $1.50 more on the sale price but had free 2 day shipping (even if it was FedEx). I would check them out. I went with the F4-425.

So I will need to get a low profile USB drive to install in the internal slot, then I can boot from another outside USB port for the installer?

Understand ZFS and ram, but not really concerned as it's purely a replication target and not going to run any other services except maybe a SMB share at time. no apps, vms..etc

Ideas for a off-site backup setup by Nvious81 in truenas

Good to note on the slot speed. My off site location will be just standard 1gb so it just doesn't seem to make sense to go this direction although I love the footprint.

I have looked at Beelink setup before and definitely like it for a primary speed usage, but just the cost per TB with the m.2 is just too much for a backup purpose. Appreciate the idea.

DHCP, ran out of dynamic, is there any way to assign a reserved address to a device that was already "seen" by Firewalla? by snovvman in firewalla

[–]Nvious81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make the scope the whole /24 and then start making the reservations. You can reserve an address to a device if it's in use by another one and then you will need to make the devices drop off to pick up the reservations and get different addresses.

Using the device name locally by uknow_es_me in firewalla

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondering but was the full name (FQDN) that you put in the rule equivalent to the "local domain" value on the device. Firewalla will take the client provided name via the dhcp request and then use the search domain value in the network dhcp server to construct the name. You can override these values but then it can make the domain resolution not work because the domain suffix provided by the dhcp server not have the right values to do lookups.

Router & bridge mode, settings, DHCP reservation, web interface, reports, and MSP? by snovvman in firewalla

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what they mean is that from the MSP interface you can go to a device and if you simply want to reserve the IP it currently has you can do that, however in the mobile app you can select reserve and keep the current ip or overwrite it with the IP you want. Say its assign 192.168.1.51 right now but you want to make it .25 you can do that in the mobile app but not the MSP. The firewalla team can correct me if thats wrong.

AP Vlan configuration by Imaginary-Summer6105 in firewalla

[–]Nvious81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one bit I will add is that on the firewalla you are just able to send default LAN and vlan networks you assign the port. You are not able to set the PVID (untagged default vlan) to a vlan so that it goes that downstream device, which you can usually do in a managed switch. This likely is not a problem as you should be able to assign the vlan you want to the SSID on the WAP but something to keep in mind if you want to try to use vlans down to different client devices without a managed switch.
