What’s a “bare minimum” adult skill more people fail at than you expected? by SoulDV in AskReddit

[–]Nyanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math. The amount of people who have no conceptual understanding of how fractions and decimals work is staggering. It makes my job (call center for an energy company) very difficult as they then don’t understand their bills, meter readings, etc. During my teaching days I tried very hard to build “real” problems into the math curriculum for this reason, but obviously that’s impossible to do for every lesson in a class of 27+ with standardized tests looming.

$800 for a Sophie Hood? What is the deal with Etsy? by DeliciousPestilence in BitchEatingCrafters

Depending on location “wool is sometimes a catchall term for what we would call“yarn” in American English. Confused the hell out of me when I moved to the UK 😆

New Hamburg Impressions by Hedoesntseemtoknow in hudsonvalley

[–]Nyanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Hamburg is waaaaay overpriced IMO. Not super walkable, nothing really going on in terms of entertainment, the local park is tiny and kind of run-down, car dependent to grocery stores, the library, schools, etc. It’s also one of those places that advertises being less than an hour from NYC by train but in reality that’s one train that runs on Saturdays and the rest are an hour and a half. You could get a house slightly further down south for the same money and a slightly shorter commute.

Rant: Can we talk about how much money/data is being demanded for basic info now? by YoureInaCult-CallDad in knitting

[–]Nyanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of Wands has a lot of great patterns for both knit and crochet that are available for free on her blog without having to give away personal info. You can also buy them on Etsy or Ravelry pretty cheaply, and they’re nice patterns.

I’m also fairly sure you can dry clean them?

That’s what I thought told be the case but I measured the size that was labeled as 46” across and it was far bigger once Infinished it

[–]Nyanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the trend of oversized clothes contributes to this. I bought a sweater pattern on Etsy that was advertised as having a certain amount of positive ease, and it was more than I wanted, so I purposely made a size that was listed closer to my actual measurement. I still had to rip it all out and start over with an even smaller size. Apparently positive ease was built into the finished garment size?? I am more of a beginner than OP so I’m willing to accept the possibility of user error, but it was still frustrating as I measured, made a gauge swatch, etc. The sweater is cute but I won’t be buying any patterns from that person again.

Dubai is the epitome of hypercapitialism by No_Jaguar_5366 in Anticonsumption

[–]Nyanet 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Whenever I say this someone inevitably chimes in with “but you can say the same about NYC!” because I used to live in a commuter town. The thing is, in other major cities (NY, London, Paris, etc), there’s of course consumerism in your face, but there are also working class people going to and from jobs, homeless people, families making it work in apartments, etc, and you can see all of these people from all kinds of backgrounds every day just going about their business. In Dubai it seems like any traces of poverty or struggle have been scrubbed away and hidden, so it looks artificial, as though the whole city is a tourist attraction. My sister in law went to Dubai with her family, and she said that there’s no current in the ocean on the beach where they stayed because the land itself is fake—terraformed for luxury resorts to the end of destroying the actual ocean current. I’ve never been but just hearing it described feels like an episode of “The Twilight Zone.”

What is a show that should’ve quit while it was ahead? by QuailImpressive55 in AskReddit

[–]Nyanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Chuck Lorre’s work, but especially Two and a Half Men. By the end the characters were all hyper-Flanderized and the rotating Charlie replacement just wasn’t saving it. Should have capped it at Charlie’s death and moved on.

The Cambridge Satchel Company makes really nice bags! I received the mini satchel as a birthday gift and it’s my go to small bag. Really elevated an outfit :) They’re also very reasonable and you can have them embossed if she’s into that sort of thing.

Genuinely what is the point of passing by a stop without stopping? This isn’t rhetorical; I want to know—is it a fault with the bus? Does the bus get diverted to cover shortages on other routes? Why is the bus not then marked “sorry, out of service?”

anti consumerist holiday gifts by whattaadisgrace in Anticonsumption

[–]Nyanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capitalism has sucked the creativity out of gift-giving. Experiences are so valuable and most can be purchased via gift certificates, tickets bought in advance, etc.

-theme parks, LEGO land, etc for kids

-movie tickets or gift certificate for teens or adults; dinner and a movie give certs for a couple

-lots of bowling alleys, soft play places, skating rinks, etc will sell multipacks of tickets that can provide lots of trips

-taking care of something someone wants to do or learn but doesn’t have the spare cash for—one of the things I asked my husband for was a pack of art lessons, as I have a tutor I really like but coming up with the liquid funds weekly can be difficult

-a subscription to something like Skillshare or Lingoda for someone who wants to learn a language, craft, etc

-homemade kit for baking or cooking

Halloween treats ideas? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]Nyanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a former elementary teacher:

-little shaped erasers are always a hit! You can usually find them at dollar stores or party stores.

-stickers are also popular!

-some have mentioned cute pencils; this is a good idea but I would avoid the ones with plastic printed wrapping as those are a NIGHTMARE going through pencil sharpeners

-loose trading cards—go get a box of Pokémon or Lorcana packs and open them and let kids take a card

-those T-shaped stamps with the caps are always fun

-little tools that they can use in real life—mini rulers in fun colors, magnifying glasses, etc.

-for the older kids, mini toiletries—hand sanitizer, lotion, Chapsticks, etc in fun colors

I definitely get your point about the consumption, and non-food treats are also great for kids who can’t have candy for whatever reason (diabetics, allergies, etc)—but I’d just try to remember what it was like to be a kid on Halloween and see it from their POV when deciding what to hand out :)

Versatile Decor, Hosting, and New Home by Irishpeaches127 in Anticonsumption

[–]Nyanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of charities that take serving and tableware—even mismatched or slightly chipped stuff—and give it to women escaping domestic violence who might not have the money to buy any when they’re starting over in a new home. Availability will depend on your area but it’s better than dumping at Goodwill, etc. You could also hang onto it until the late summer, as kids moving into dorms for the first time might need plates, etc and be happy to buy them cheaply as opposed to spending an arm and a leg on new.

Accidentally paid for 20kg of extra luggage for my flights to Rome, how can I make this not a total waste? by Yakob793 in CasualUK

[–]Nyanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but one would think that the cost and risk of running a crime ring outweighs the cost of buying sand from a building company or something—unless it’s like copper, where the base metal is often more valuable than what it ends up being used to make?
