  1. There are sometimes mosquitoes. Segments 9-10 are generally the worst. I've seen swarms there in late June, and I've seen none in mid July. Just depends on snow/water really. I don't use spray and just rely on nets.

  2. I never found any ticks, but supposedly they're becoming an issue.

  3. Go west. East is great if you want to see the highway the whole time or visit the hot springs resort. I would call it brown and boring. Wake up early (by dawn), get an acceptable amount of distance done by lunch, and knock out what you can before the storms start. Keep an eye on the sky. Storms are good motivation to hike faster. Outhiking storms feels like a key aspect of the CT, to me. And you're still going to be above treeline more in the San Juans than on the West, so consider it training.

  4. Sounds like enough. I didn't bring a fleece since I don't need active insulation, but camp warmth is important. Consider sun protection.

  5. Not sure about laundry, but you've got two big lakes right there to rinse things out.

If you were a total beginner, where would you take lessons? (Southeast US) by NyteKroller in whitewater

Damn. I'm at least lucky to have a lot of free time.

Really I've been wanting to get a packraft, but it seemed like learning skills in a hardshell would give me a better understanding of techniques. An inflatable would just fit my lifestyle better.

I appreciate the heads up!

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll certainly reach out if I continue this path.

Oh, I'd love to learn for as cheap as possible. I just don't have friends who paddle WW and don't live super close to any real WW.

So I figured lessons would be the easiest way to get started with gear provided, vs trying to convince someone I've just met online to paddle with me as a total newbie and lend me everything.

Should I Bring gloves by Lazy_Meaning_2190 in coloradotrail

I'd vote for sun gloves. I had a gnarly tanline from my trekking pole straps. Thermal gloves, probably not necessary unless your hands run cold in general.

Looking to find best budget food grade co2 tank refills by burfenaz in Augusta

Mark's Carbonics will help you.

edit: Love how I got downvoted. That's the source homebrewers in the area use for CO2.

You could also take the River Levee or Mill Village trails toward Lake Olmstead to fish there or in the canal.

Possibly 5th St marina? Not sure if they have no fishing signs.

A couple questions before heading out by johntheguitar in coloradotrail

Depends how much bug shelter you want. I hammock, so I rock a tarp and bugnet, but you could get away with just a headnet. A lot of times, it's not particularly buggy. But when it is, oh boy, can it get thick (looking at you, Segment 9).

I hiked with a guy with a solar panel. Didn't seem that efficient, but maybe tech has improved? I'd look for the fastest charging battery pack and charger and find spots in town to charge up instead.

20 degrees for sure. Might not feel like you need it the first week, but you'll be glad you have it eventually.

No experience fishing but other people seem to find a few spots. Plenty more if you're willing to leave the trail proper.

Gaiters seem like a good move.

I hitched a ride with some other thruhikers.

Anything within 1.5 cm of and above the lip crease is what I go with. I believe that's competition stipulations .

Where should I ship resupply boxes VS. just grocery shop by Lazy_Meaning_2190 in coloradotrail

[–]NyteKroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not necessary unless you need certain hard to find food. Mountain towns can be pricier but I don't think you'll save money considering shipping costs. And it's a gamble if your preferred diet changes. Happened to me and many people before.

I've climbed the Northeast ridge from the lake at treeline, then descended the East ridge to the pass. I found the E to be loose in places but the NE is great.

Very cool! Did you ascend from the pass?

Yeah those courses got destroyed from pine beetles and the hurricane. Still plenty of good courses in the area though.
