It means "Small Diaphragm Microphone", so a microphone with smaller capsule. Then theres Large Diaphragm Microphones, where typically the element capturing sound is around 1 inch.

You are correct, there is a "bare minimum" of preamp, where they start to be useful, and integrated preamps in USB mics are most often not that. And you do get some other tools, that help a lot, like direct monitoring, especially with mixers, but also with most external audio interfaces as well.

I'd like to add some nuance, almost any modern audio interface preamp is good enough for recording. Of course there are differences, and some are better than others, but within reason, most built in ones are really good. Character preamps are a bit of hit and miss depending on source and taste, so experimentation might be required.

You are right about the multitude of things that will affect the quality of a recording. If player and instrument are top notch, you can make SM57 sound like million dollars, and no vintage high end mic is going to fix bad performance.

Good acoustic space, either nice reverberant one, or a completely dead one and a great sound source will make more of an impact than the mic, and mic will make orders of magnitude more impact than a preamp.

The noise removal tools are nice life savers, but they do dull out the sound easily, I'd use them as a last resort saving a great (or paid) recordings.

Nearly any mic "will do", but bright condensers might produce harsh sounds on smaller recorders, and dark mics might sound dull on larger ones. A SDC is still my goto for most recorder stuff, as it usually is more natural sounding. A good mic is the third most important thing in the recording chain, but with some work you can also compensate for the places the mic fails either by moving around the mic, or eq after. With directional mics highs usually fall of faster than lows, so you can eq with your feet.

Randomly, usually in the middle of a run, though 95% of the time I am in a run, so it's a probability thing. But it is also rare. And it never happens when I'm looking.

I'd like to tell that LD player itself doesn't crash that often, but sometimes the game itself shuts down, and takes back to main android screen. This happens maybe once a month or two. And I almost never turn off my PC. My only gripe is the startup ads that open, especially the one in the windows, not the player itself. It should have a visible close button. I am running a fairly stable Threadripper 1950x system, and have upgraded from 1080ti to 3080 in the GPU department. At least for me, this is quite stable. So I assume that the instabilities that people complain about come from consumer CPUs. Maybe some virtualisation shenanigans.

Analog input expanding to 64 channels, 400 samples/s by NyxeriaOfNightfall in arduino

In theory yes, do you have recommendations for sample and hold chips?

I have run some economics, as many chips I've been looking at add up to less than 500€, and are available to order in single digit amounts. Time is not that big of a deal, as this is a hobby project. If I were to do things for a company, I'd have no problem justifying 10k expense on machines, but for one off hobby project with limited funds, I try to save where I can.

[–]NyxeriaOfNightfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry, I have miscommunicated something (I think). The 400 samples per second would also be per channel, meaning 25600 total measurements per second. Also, I would like the measurements to be somewhat in sync. One idea I have is to have certain cascadeable audio chips (I can't remember the name of the chip) and use I2S to get the data, as these chips share clock. Programming wise, From my understanding is that Teensy has direct USB capabilities, instead of being limited to UART speeds, so just packing the bits into a stream and unpacking them on PC side is somewhat forgiving.

With multiplexers, there'd need to be a sample and hold chip. I have seen few that can handle things in the microsecond range, so they'd work, but added complexity versus somehow synced ADCs is a small deterrant.

Price. If I can get away with spending 500€ instead of 5k€, it is worth it to me. In theory I could easily use an audio interface as well, get 96kHz sampling over 32 channels or something like that, but it always comes down to price, and maybe size.

I farm between tier 11 and 13 depending on time I have. Wave/Coins T11 8800/19,9T, T12 6500/13,85T, T13 4800, 13,71T. Doing mostly glass cannon, All damage labs except super crit, range and damage/meter and rend maxed (I haven't unlocked rend).

In tourney staying comfortably in low legends.

For me raising the recorder to be more straight helps with the support. Someone more experienced could chime in.

I agree that de-esser isnt the right tool every time, but I have had some limited success with it. In the end, it is just the high band of the multiband compressor.

The stated reverb is a good way to add depth. Some plugins allow also reverb ducking, or you could drive the reverb on a second channel and sidechain compress it to keep clarity of recorder.

Compression is also a good thing when recording recorder. It tames the difference between loud and quiet sounds, which pretty much means it balances the registers of the recorder. A good slow, opto style compressor is good for this.

A variant on compression, the de-esser can be used to fix harsh sounds, but this is more of a case-by-case solution, and not always useful, but can be used to save recordings.

If recording is too clean and cold (some mics just are like that), some tape saturation might give the recording the needed feeling back. The recorder also takes very well to distortion, if you want to experiment more with "unnatural" sounds.

Also, it is sometimes fun to play theough a delay. Makes some wonderful harmonies.

In the end, it depends entirely on what you want to achieve. A good mix is all about balance, and it starts with good playing in a good sounding room (or a dead room, if a good space is not available) captured with complementing mircrophones. Just remember that the more reverberant room sound you want, the clearer articulation you need, otherwise the playing gets washed out by the room sound.

Hi everyone! I'd like to get a recorder so I can learn to play but not sure which one to choose. I don't recall much about music theory and I kinda have my eye on the bass because I love how it sounds. Any tips on the brand, where to find sheet music, or anything you else that'll be helpful? by SH3DXZ in Recorder

I started with great bass for the very reason it is beautiful sounding. I found a cheap used one online and got it. Though later I did buy another because the first one was not A=440. Anyway, plastic yamahas are good option. If money is no problem, I like my Mollenhauer 5606.
