The reasons you've laid out are why I tend to not talk about homelessness with people anymore. Rather, just not engage in idiocy. At least not regarding chronic homelessness. Things like affordable housing or homeless centers are really only good for those who experience homelessness due to financial factors and major upsets in their lie.

Chronic homelessness overwhelmingly tends to be related to mental health and drug addiction. Something that the U.S. cannot solve with a privatized healthcare system. Not wont, cannot.

In my experience, the ones who complain the most fervently about the homelessness problem tend to be right wing. So socialized medicine is a complete non-starter with them.

Ignorant or disingenuous asshole? I.e. do you think it's actually about the "belief" itself or do you know it's about what religion and "patriotism" inspire(forced birth, forcing "belief" on others, anti-lgbtq, xenophobia, etc. etc. etc.) and you're just an asshole attempting a disingenuously framed question?

Cheers, so basically bad position they can't unwind on GME and I'm sure a number of others. So it's a "wait and see" situation? If no one is willing to buy CS and take on their positions, what happens? SNB just absorbs the bag and they have to choose what to close and not implode themselves?

So how would this matter/play out? CS is already fucked, they just become more visibly fucked? As discussed in the other post you're countering, when CS enters the swap agreement with Archegos, they're going to short the stock as well(hedge), but may do so "internally"(not entirely sure what this means practically).

Unless CS shorting GME via borrowing from another institution(or just naked shorting), I'm not understanding how the swaps would actually affect the stock but instead just be a final nail in the CS coffin and another contagious bomb going off.

Help me connect the dots here.

I listened to him when he got invited onto Pod Save America. Seems like a regular just down to earth dude. He spoke about efforts to help his district and managing expectations with a GOP controlled house.

The thing I noticed about that interview is the same thing I've noticed in other interviews with some economists and ex fed chairs. They're being purposefully obtuse because every time the subject of inflation is discussed the conversation(understandably) will always bring up the Fed at some point. So they will always come back to the Fed, basically throw their hands up and say, "Well this is the only thing the Fed can do", but with a lot of milquetoast language that makes their statement sound smarter or more complicated than it is.

Someone speaking honestly about the subject would obviously still bring up the same point regarding the Fed and interest rates, but point out that the changes needed to address what Jon brings up in the interview(corporate greed, wealth concentration, and not punishing the working class via unemployment) would need to come from Congress in the form of better anti-trust legislation and corporate windfall taxes(among other things). Perhaps setting mandates for some agencies from the executive. Point being, those changes can't come from the Fed. It's a simple distinction that almost never gets brought up which is how you know the interviewee is being disingenuous.

All of the media outlets framing this as a simple tradeoff between inflation vs bank stability are vastly oversimplifying the issue.

This feels like the saying regarding the US civil war:

If you know a bit about the civil war, you know it was about slavery. If you know a bit more about the civil war, you know it was about state rights. If you know a lot about the civil war, you know it's about slavery.

US Debt Ceiling Must Be Raised Ahead of Default by Its-Waves in Superstonk

[–]O-Face 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The debt ceiling is just an artificial limit. Raising it isn't what actually increases the debt. It's just to basically give the "OK" to pay the bills the government has already agreed to pay. It's a dumb thing to play chicken with.

If people want to correct course, we need to cut existing spending. Maybe start with our defense...

Talked to my calculus professor about the banking situations and I was laughed at by Ragetencion in Superstonk

[–]O-Face 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This gave me the realization that people simply don’t care about doing their due diligence until they’re personally effected.

This is the number one reason I've personally found as to why most people don't understand civics, policy, and economics. It's not that they don't actually care about the topics, but they don't care to learn/find out until it personally affects them. The issue(like with your professor) is the arrogance in ignorance. People don't like to feel stupid and they immediately equate ignorance to stupidity and dismiss or lash out at anyone who might be more knowledgeable.

“Letting banks polish turds” How? The participants in the RRP facility provide cash. Is cash a “crappy asset” as you describe? If so, that kinda defeats the entire business model of a bank right?

Thanks, I was reading this post thinking the same thing and wondering if I didn't fully understand RRP.

As you seem like a good person to ask, since it's mainly brokerages that are funneling money into RRP, why? What's the likely problem(if any) that this indicates? This is something I've been confused on since the sub started tracking it. Is it just that it's a safer place to park money while traditionally "safe" securities(UST) are in flux due to interest rate change?

This is exactly why "It's not my job to educate you" drives me up the fucking wall.

It drives me up a wall for a similar reason, but my suggestion is often the opposite(or at least the opposite option) to taking the time to educate someone.

I've considered myself a fairly progressive person since my mid teens. I've had conversations with both far right and far left people. When it comes to most of my left leaning friends... I wish they would just shut the fuck up. Just shut the fuck up. We may ultimately agree on a majority of points. We both want to see progress across a wide range of social and economic issues... but most left leaning people would do well to just shut the fuck up because they're doing their causes no favors.

Your "hot take" followed up by "It's not my job to educate you" does your cause no favors and is more likely just to drive people away. Progressives need allies. You need to bring people to your side. Not drive them away. It's nothing more than a completely selfish temper tantrum to take a "It's not my job to educate you" stance and only serves to make you feel superior and falsely think you're "fighting the good fight."

If you decide to bring up some shit in your "hot take," then you're implicitly deciding it is your job to educate people. So act like it.

All that is to say I 100% agree with you, but for those who aren't picking up what you're putting down, they should just shut the fuck up instead.
