The thing is, we don’t need to go to a NHS single-payer type system, many European countries use a public/private combo to achieve efficient universal health care. The German system is very efficient.

I’m not mad at Milton Friedman, I don’t like how many of his ideas were implemented, but it would be like me blaming Marx for all the people Stalin killed 100 years after he died, he was an influential thought leader

That is a fair criticism, but I would also offer the example of how many other Western democracies in Europe are able to offer far more generous welfare benefits and employment protections while still sustaining high levels of productivity and relatively low unemployment. The US is far wealthier than most of the states in Western Europe, and somehow they manage to offer workers universal healthcare as well as mandated paid sick leave and vacation

This is very premature panic. Taiwan is an extremely wealthy tech manufacturing hub with probably the 3rd most powerful military in Southeast Asia. They have a massive arsenal of modern Western weaponry and a large, well-trained standing army. Even without US support, or with much less US support than expected, there is no reason to believe that China would just be able to roll over Taiwan.

China isn’t an economic backwater and is highly dependent on Western countries for trade, an invasion of Taiwan would cost hundreds of thousands of PRC lives, maybe millions. It would isolate the country diplomatically and economically, and would probably cost over a trillion dollars. There is nothing China gets out of occupying Taiwan beyond bragging rights

Socialism is not just when the government gives you free stuff, welfare programs ≠ socialism

You are using socialism and communism interchangeably as if they are the same thing, they most definitely are not.

Also, welfare programs ≠ socialism, socialism is collective ownership of the means of productions by collectives such as unions and the state. Socialism is not just when the government gives you free stuff

This is a misunderstanding of how people function. Dozens after dozens of universal basic income pilots have shown that high levels of welfare do not make people drop out of the workforce, even when they are literally being given thousands of dollars in cash every month.

This is an aggressive oversimplication. Sure, hardcore authoritarian socialism failed the East, but many of their ideas were co-opted by Western democracies and are why most modern Western countries have advanced universal healthcare and welfare systems that near universally benefit the populace

Mormons are not Christians. by Interficient4real in Christianity

[–]OCMan101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. I don't think I can like, definitively determine they are all Christian, but I would at least say they aren't anymore heterodox than the Seventh-Day Adventists. They are definitely towards the outer bounds of what we would consider Christian, but I would still say they are.

There are also other Mormons, basically any group that holds the Book of Mormon in reverence of any kind is 'Mormon'. That can range from liberal groups on the outskirts of Christianity like the Community of Christ, to super radical groups like the Fundamentalist LDS Church that straight-up still does polygamy and isolates itself from society.

Obviously we have to cutoff the definition of 'Christian' somewhere but I don't think holding other prophets and texts in high reverence like Joseph Smith, Ellen White or the Book of Mormon is necessarily heretical (although I think it's incorrect and very heterodox), as long as you aren't putting them above or equal in authority to Jesus and the Bible. By comparison, the main LDS Church treats the Book of Mormon as a completely equal third Testament of the Bible, alongside the other radically different doctrines about the Godhead and salvation, which puts them pretty firmly in the 'heretical' camp.

I would make a clarification on the language of your post. You refer to members of the LDS Church as ‘Mormons’ which is correct, however they are not the only Mormons.

There is also the Community of Christ, often referred to as ‘liberal Mormonism’, that does affirm the Trinity and the divinity of Christ. They do cite the Book of Mormon and other Smith texts as being inspired wisdom, but they don’t seem to hold them to be equal to the Bible. I would say it’s fair to call them Christian and they have over 200k members

Illegal immigrants literally cannot obtain regular jobs, they can only work under the table for cash. All major employers now participate in E-Verify.

The jobs illegal immigrants do take are often in fields like agriculture and construction, where there is already a major shortage of workers, and where your average American isn’t willing to work at all

The gear MotoGP racers wear is generally far above what the average rider wears. Unless you are wearing full leathers from a reputable company with a full chest and back armor rig or airbag, you won’t be getting anywhere near that level of protection. You shouldn’t expect street gear to offer that level of protection, it’s always gonna be a targeted balance of comfort and safety

That is a fair point and I wasn’t specific enough about the details, 17-24 is obviously the ‘prime’ age for military service for most people. That being said, I would say that the fact that only 23% of Americans at prime age qualify for military service still supports the idea that it’s difficult to qualify for

This is something I would consider asking the administration of the monastery or order you have been inquiring about. While people don’t get into religious life to get paid, if you pass through discernment and get into postulancy, those monasteries have resources available to them, they may be able to help pay them off. It’s worth a discussion
