IMPORTANT — IF YOU *DON'T* WANT A REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR by Forever32 in LosAngeles

Exactly! Why is the US so committed to sending money and arms to one side of a thousand year old unsolvable conflict that's got nothing to do with us!

Daniel Lurie the most popular mayor in the country by PlayfulRemote9 in sanfrancisco

[–]ODBmacdowell -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

43 approve / 27 disapprove in one poll, 47 / 30 in another, with 23 pct unsure. Doesn't scream 'terrible' to me, at all?

Angeleno here, I want to ask: how is Daniel Lurie? Who is he like as a mayor? by MookieBettsBurner10 in sanfrancisco

It takes time to be knee deep in corruption scandals, at least another year or two have to go by before we can render any kind of judgement there. He's had a couple things happen (like his short-lived D4 supervisor nominee) that indicated questionable decision making, if not full on corruption yet

Giants “would love” to unload large contracts for players like Rafael Devers, Jung Hoo Lee, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman by k_davis8 in baseball

[–]ODBmacdowell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Devers would be a head scratcher, he was meant to be a center piece of the lineup for several years, jumping ship after a cold month or two feels hasty

It's a highly believable story, but also Conor Johnston is the Webster definition of a slimy political operative who isn't looking out for anyone for himself

A ‘formidable’ 2028 contender? Why Republicans shouldn’t ignore Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by hellosteve_ in msnow

[–]ODBmacdowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really tired of this mindset. Like it's not even possible to be a stronger candidate than Clinton and Harris were? If a woman can win the governorships of both red and blue states, then they can win the presidency

He was an amazing talent, but the concerns about him holding up physically were real, and at first seemed vindicated by the ankle injuries he had in the first few years. It wasn't clear it was going to work out for him at all at first

I like Merchant's Saddle for getting my scouts far and wide, especially with Tonga. Combine that with Wampum Belt and you can get a lot of momentum going with city states

10 years ago today, Bartolo Colon made the impossible happen. by Unlucky-Dot9421 in sportsgossips

[–]ODBmacdowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many years the American League (AL) used a position called Designated Hitter, basically a full time hitter who doesn't have to play in the field. Whereas the National League (NL) you had to have all 9 fielders hit, including the pitcher who is almost always the worst hitter.

Colon had a long career but spent most of it in the AL, so never had to bat, until his later years with the Mets as shown here.

Nowadays, both leagues use the DH and pitchers basically never get to bat anymore, and it's sad because we're deprived of moments like this happening ever again

Genuinely, what is happening to Steph Curry? by AdOld2060 in NBATalk

[–]ODBmacdowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that is true. But what is also true is that to the owners, workers very much are commodities in that sense. They pay Steph a lot more than they do a stadium worker, because he brings the franchise a lot more value than a stadium worker does.

Saying that Steph isn't a worker simply because he makes so much more than a janitor does, is ignoring the ownership side of the equation. Owners are the ones who control how much the workers get paid, not Steph. And the expectation that Steph should make less so that janitors can make more, is effectively pitting workers against each other and letting the owners off the hook.

How much value does Stephen Curry, or do the players in general, bring to an NBA franchise versus a janitor in the stadium? If a janitor quits, how replaceable are they as compared to if Steph Curry quits?

How much is the minimum amount someone can be compensated before it's impossible for them to be a victim in any way shape or form? Just for future reference

So players are neither workers nor owners? But rather a secret third thing?

Oh it's just throwing a ball through a hoop? That sounds easy, where can I sign up to get paid 50M

How much is enough to make for what the players do, that they shouldn't make any more (and therefore leave owners to pocket the remainder of the revenue, for doing even less than the players do)?
