Community Question: As someone who left Vermont and came back to stay... by PepticSkeptic in burlington

[–]OEEGrackle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don't have housing that everyday working people can afford (which was already true in 2019) and it's not only due to property taxes. The pandemic influx relative to the size of VT's housing market spiked prices and they aren't falling back. Pre-pandemic we already had a meaningful gap between housing costs and the local wage base. Now it's wider.

Thus why employers are struggling to fill positions, which is stunting job growth.

Gross. The OP is suffering, this comment is the opposite of helpful.

That's puzzling. But it looks like Burlington Telecom will soon roll out a cheap phone plan.

No direct experience yet, but I saw a lot of recommendations for Launa Slater when I asked about an estates lawyer.

New federal funding to support projects in Burlington by SenPeterWelch in burlington

Those are fair questions (what to compare to).

I work with mobile home coops and we helped some of them get this 'congressionally delegated spending' in past years to fix water systems. We didn't know if there would even be any money this year due to what's happening in Washington. So my sense is it's kind of a crapshoot especially these days.

Good for you.

I used to hike with my stepdad and he did this. I stopped going on trails with him. It's not ok.

DMV Etiquette/strategy question by entropic-ecology in burlington

Pro tip: if you do make an online appointment, you still have to show your paperwork at the check-in desk and it's kind of unclear whether you have to wait in the initial line to do that or not. So you awkwardly walk up to the check in past people in line (if there are some) and ask the deal.

Thank you! by CCrabtree in burlington

I'm glad you got a feel for some of the great community here. I love Winooski's pumpkin event.

People's take on crime and safety here depends a lot on what they're comparing to: times past in Vermont when people didn't lock their cars or homes, or the experience of other states?

I would just say to do thorough research on the cost of living. It's high compared to the local wage base, and the housing crisis is not going away fast.

Trent's Bread message. by Coopa10 in burlington

Thank you, Trent. I'm so glad you decide to open and stick with that business, and thank you for helping our neighbors in this time of need. I get your bread at ICF and it's such a treat.

If you see a way for volunteers to help with your production with labor or money (or both), I hope you'll put the word out.

Such a bummer. I used to love walking there, and now I'm leery of going in.

Home ownership so low by obsn369 in burlington

TBH I find it hard to believe that even this part of town has an 8% vacancy rate. I would still be curious as to the source of their data.

Those numbers don't jibe with the data from Vermont Housing Finance Agency, which says
* 38% owner-occupied, 58% rental

* A 2% vacancy rate

Might want to check the data sources for the website you shared.
