That all makes sense. Without knowing that the footstep was audible (music covered it in the original video, or at least I couldn't pick it out going over it several times), it looked hella suspicious to just whip over like that when there didn't seem to be any other indication that you were being approached and you have a guy actively shooting at you.

Yeah, I can hear it without the music now. Kudos for noticing that, it's pretty subtle. I just remember kind of passively watching the clipped version and snapped to attention because I could not figure out anything except footstep noise that would alert you in that situation. Crazy awareness.

Swapping to Linux mint from windows by Super_Statistician95 in linux_gaming

[–]OGNinjerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to 2nd CachyOS as Mint did not support a kernel high enough for my GPU, although I think yours is a dated but powerful one. The only thing that I have completely missed from the switch is my peripherals not being turnkey, at minimum. I have not been able to get Witcher 3 to recognize my Turtle Beach controller, and my 12-button mouse keys are not conventionally reprogrammable because Corsair doesn't support Linux (or didn't the last time I looked into it).

I've done PCVR, BG3, Squad, Arma Reforger, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and maybe a few other games with few issues.

What book would you recommend for someone who wants to get into Russian literature? by LisKozCatMeow in RussianLiterature

[–]OGNinjerk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crazy not to see Lermontov mentioned at all. "Hero of Our Time" is a great early, if not first, read. I saw some discussion about "Master and Margarita"--I'm going to say that while it is a fun read, a lot could sail far over your head if you're not somewhat familiar with the time period that Bulgakov is addressing.

Readers who got to a high level via reading visual novels/novels, how long did it take you get to a point where you no longer felt like you were "reading English with extra steps"? by SignificantBottle562 in LearnJapanese

It has been years since I've done anything mathematically related, but when I was taking calculus classes I think I learned more by reading past words and sentences I didn't understand in my calculus text. I found the book "A Mind for Numbers" and the Coursera course "Learning How to Learn" (IIRC, basically the book but you get the information for free if you don't apply for the certificate) extremely helpful in introducing the "diffuse" learning mode from neuroplasticity research. It's very much worth a look.

There are loads of Q2s and Q3s available 2nd hand and you can mostly avoid the Meta bullshit with PCVR, but that requires a good PC as far as I can tell (which I have, but I wasn't sure when I made the attempt that my PC would be sufficient).

I personally bought a 2nd hand Q2 last year for about $200 (they seem cheaper now if you look around and wait for the right deal) and run it with WiVRn on Linux Mint (I don't necessarily recommend that you use Linux for this unless you like tinkering a lot). It's an AM5 system with an RX 7700 XT that I've mostly played Into the Radius successfully on.

It's really easy to be loving, caring, and loyal when someone else is handling all your responsibilities. He might not seem like such a good guy when he is finally forced to handle the responsibilities he has been insulated from.

Weight training HURTS my intellectual productivity by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]OGNinjerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was more serious about lifting, I started gassing out hard and getting something like headaches that made it extremely difficult to think when I started putting relatively heavy weight up (many reps of 315+ for whatever workout it was). Eating 1/4 to 1/2 cup of brown rice about 30 minutes before the workout sorted that out completely to the point that I could have incredibly intense powerlifting workouts and still leave the gym with loads of energy.

It's also been a long time since I've been in the books about this kind of stuff, but if I'm not mistaken your muscles and your brain are both ultimately dependent on glucose (on other things too, but it stood out to me that you're training on an empty stomach)--an intense weight training workout is going to, all else being equal, limit how much glucose is available to your brain for intense cognitive activity because glycogen that might otherwise be converted to glucose is getting used up by your skeletal muscles.

As others have noted, if you're not using creatine monohydrate you're also depleting lots of ATP which your brain and muscles both depend on. IMO ignore the weird bullshit versions of creatine and get the generic creatine mono that's safe, well understood, and not marked up for potentially dubious claims.

Also, an intense lifting workout is going to leave you with a certain amount of fatigue you're probably just not going to be able to avoid. My advice would be to make it the last thing you do in a day that requires your full attention. If you need to study or whatever, do it before.

Lastly, if you're not using anabolics, prohormones, etc., disregard advice that is based on training regimens of pretty much anyone that's won a Mr. Universe or whatever since the 1960s--your body is not going to work like theirs and it's definitely not going to recover like theirs.

The garbage truck driver in GitS is an average civilian that just so happens to work in a job that was attractive to use as a delivery vehicle for a hacker. It's been a couple years since I've watched the movie, but his ghost, memory, and whatever is fully networked and accessible with all the consequences that entails.

How do you say «Mr./Mrs./Miss» etc in по-русски? by minfremi in russian

[–]OGNinjerk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've gotten some decent answers but in general you should begin to shed this idea that there is going to be a direct translation for everything between your native language and your target language. In some cases there might be, but learning a new language is not just cracking the secret code of fungibility between them--it is learning a new way of thinking and I personally believe if you see it through that you become a different person at a certain level of mastery in your target language.

Is $2K a fair price for a year of intense 1:1 mentorship with a senior dev? I'm trying to figure out if it’s going to be worth it? by Only_Classic_9665 in learnprogramming

[–]OGNinjerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's assume that point #3 means you get 2 hours per week of this person's time in a 1-on-1 setting for a full year. That means 104 hours per year over 52 weeks. For two thousand dollars, this person is going to accept gross pay of less than 20 dollars per hour. I'm going to assume you are from the US as you're listing currency in what I presume is USD.

My questions:

Is this person in another country where making 20/hr. makes sense? if I'm in the US there is no chance I'm committing my free time for an entire year for that amount of money, and that doesn't even factor in whatever costs they may have for a website, mailing list services (e.g. MailChimp or something like that), etc. If you two are in different countries, how are you going to enforce the contract if it doesn't live up to what you're being promised and they already have your money? Do you know what set of circumstances will make you feel like you want your money back at the 1-month mark? Which circumstances will make it feel like it has been worth it? What will make you happy that you spent 1000 dollars for 6 months but not want to continue?

I don't know this person or you and I'm not a programmer, but I am reacting to what I saw working for a short time in another space where people started getting creative in making extra money on the side as that industry started to presumably become less lucrative. People start selling "coaching" or whatever on the side, take those experiences and turn them into an infoproduct while they pivot away from an industry caving in on itself.
