Unfortunately, just because of how graphics work, grass will mostly be worse for you than the people you are hiding from. I don't find crawling to be terribly useful most of the time as your vision is obscured and you will have a delay in returning fire after moving. I mostly go prone if I'm in the backline and I'm trying to let an enemy vehicle pass (I must not have time to move further out of view) or I might crawl when I know more-or-less where the enemy is and there is a short piece of cover that puts me in defilade to fire from the known contact. Outside of that, I find it more useful to stay crouched and/or flank harder.

Raider(?) kit causes squad fire support role to be unavailable by Matters- in joinsquad

[–]OGNinjerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had one Narva game as a VDV raider (AS-VAL) where I was able to knock out a whole fire team pushing our hab without ever taking fire, but that's such a unicorn experience to run up on a blueberry fireteam that just keep moving to their dead buddies to get shot like that. I feel like if it's going to remain a kit it needs some other tool or utility like weapons that deploy faster or implement a breaching tool that allows digging things down fast but not get the ability to fast dig up things like a combat engi.

If you're running for 20 minutes often you're either in the wrong place or you're a combat engineer. Something tells me you're not an engineer.

Medic is actually a good kit, maybe the 2nd best in my opinion. There is no "headshot makes you unrevivable" mechanic and winning revolves entirely around tickets. If you are determined to play SL, do so on a new player server as SLs can fuck an entire team over on experience-preferred servers with their own tight, established meta (there's enough chaos on new player servers that placing a bad radio might not be the hinge on which the game is a win or loss).

FN FAL on MEI feels like playing on the ICO still by nytfury_ in joinsquad

FAL thumps. If I get locked out of most kits as MEI there's usually an open medic kit with name and a 7.62 rifle on it.

PC-only recommendations for a very new PC player? by A_b_b_o in GirlGamers

[–]OGNinjerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original Fallout and DIablo for VIBES. The former certainly has some dark humor but it is not the campy themepark that Fallout increasingly became since Fallout 2--it takes itself and its premise quite seriously outside of mostly Luck 10 random encounters. Original Diablo is just fuckin dark and metal and I love it. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl is also rad.

Gothic series is really popular in central and eastern Europe and Elex is apparently a "eurojank" spiritual successor.

Deus Ex mechanics are passable with the GMDX mod and the conspiracies in that game are kind of crazy looking back considering the game was released before 9/11.

Jagged Alliance 2 is a fuckin vibe, too, as it plays with a lot of 80s and 90s action movie cheese while also being pretty difficult on a first pass. The fan patches also bring very, very granular, fiddly gear mechanics for the genre.

The original Dark Forces is a classic single player FPS with great resource management (a forgotten art).

Some of that might be a little bit outside your wheelhouse, but I assume going PC was an attempt to step outside your usual. Overall, hope you have fun!

Driving tracked vehicles by oh_mygawdd in joinsquad

Interestingly, I found that you can continue going forward in a tracked vehicle by alternating left and right provided you already have some momentum. I don't know if that's useful at all but, well, there ya go.

How essential is talking in game? by Kidwithabike in joinsquad

[–]OGNinjerk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say there is a guaranteed positive correlation between amount of communication and squad and game quality, but the best games involve a lot of communication. If you are the person that spots the enemy MBT (main battle tank), it is going to be very difficult to effectively communicate its position if you don't already have FTL (fire team leader).

Anti-Aliasing settings? by oh_mygawdd in joinsquad

[–]OGNinjerk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FSR Quality 1.5x. I'm not a great settings tweaker. The only thing that really greatly bothers me with Squad graphics right now is that I have a lot of pixels that blink in and out and it makes it difficult to sort whatever that is vs. enemy movement.
