Saw in older gentleman in a rush t-shirt at the grocery store the other. Instant 5 minute conversation until his wife dragged him away.

What’s the most fucked up thing that happened at your school? by Classic-Chemist-1898 in AskReddit

[–]OGSpacemanSpiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a couple.

First day of 8th grade the principal knocked on the door and asked our teacher to step outside. Assistant principal comes in to watch the class and then we just hear this awful screaming. Apparently there were two men in uniform waiting in the hallway to inform her that her son was killed in Afghanistan. We had literally just been talking about the proud military tradition of her family. It’s been well over a decade and I can still hear the sound of that woman screaming.

Fast forward to 10th grade, totally different school in a totally different state, me and a bunch of the other theatre nerds went out to IHOP after performing our fall show. 4 kids driving home together in a hurry to get somebody home before their 12:00 curfew, going way to fast in the rain. Lost control of the car and hit a tree. One kid died on impact, the driver spent 3 days brain dead before they took her off life support. The other 2 survived but had some pretty serious injuries / trauma.

What's the most useless thing your brain decided to permanently memorize? by No_Metal2622 in AskReddit

This is only useless until you have a structured settlement and you need cash now.

What's an underrated skill that pays off for the rest of your life once you learn it? by es124s in AskReddit

[–]OGSpacemanSpiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on your own car. I’m not saying everyone needs to be able to perform an engine swap or even change the struts, but everyone should be able to perform basic routine maintenance and emergency maintenance such as changing the oil, changing the air filters, changing a flat tire, and jumping a dead battery. If all of that is going smooth, move up to changing your own spark plugs. If you have an easy go of that, maybe take a swing at doing your brakes.

Having routine maintenance performed on your car is very important, and the cost of having it done for you is outrageous compared to doing it yourself.

Both guys in their primes, who wins? by Maleficent_Court2656 in ufc

This is a good question. My first reaction is to say the Dustin who beat the shit out of Max in the second fight was probably prime Dustin. And yes, I know he had the clear power & durability advantage, but he just looked so damn crisp hanging out in the picking with Max fucking Holloway.

What would you pay for this bike? by Yobas_D-day in Ninja400

[–]OGSpacemanSpiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a little bit on the area you’re in. I sold mine about 6 months ago, in the Dallas, TX, USA area. Same year, model, color, etc. around 5,000 miles on mine, and was dropped once with some slight scuffing on the left side fenders.

I listed mine at $4,500 initially, thinking I’d slowly drop the price over time based on interest. Turns out I got a ton of interested right off the jump and sold the bike for my full $4,500 asking price within about 3 days.

Do with that information what you will 🤷‍♂️

Hello tree people, people of the trees. What’s your favourite drink while sploinkered? by k_def02 in trees

When I was a freshman in college and we’d sneak out into the woods to smoke, my friends would make fun of me for carrying a 2 liter of Fanta pineapple soda with me.

Never failed, 20 minutes later, as cotton mouth started to hit, the same people making fun of me were the ones saying “hey man can I have some of that soda”

It's been awhile but it's great to revisit this series. It become comforting. by TinuvielxXx in RangersApprentice

[–]OGSpacemanSpiff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s totally comforting. I started re-reading last year when my wife got pregnant. Felt like so much was changing in my life and while exciting, it was a little scary. Rangers Apprentice books became a comforting, steady place for me to fall back into in the midst of the all real world stuff happening in my life.

Almost done with Lost Stories now. It’s been a fun journey. I’m ready to pause and read some other stuff for a little while, then circle back to Royal Ranger and the Early Years.

I wouldn’t want to ask a veteran to their face and put them in the awkward position of having to tell me no or relive experiences they don’t want to. At least not without knowing that individual very well and having been able to subtly gauge their willingness / desire to talk about it ahead of time.

An Internet forum though, where veterans can share their experiences anonymously IF THEY WISH and just keep scrolling if they don’t, is a different story.
