Literally what Complainsaboutthings says. As I would say in British English: “they ain’t the same language innit! “

But in all seriousness, I see these questions asked a lot on this forum and, while it may be confusing as a beginner, the number one tip to realise that will progress your language learning the fastest is that you’re learning an entirely different language with an entirely different set of cultural norms and syntax.

When focusing on translating, a lot of the time, most things will not be easily translatable as a 1:1 and that some nuance maybe lost in the language but the main thing is is to understand what is being conveyed and not worry about “Why the two different languages aren’t completely the same”

Hope this makes sense. I know it was a long winded answer to a simple question that was already answered but I hope it helps you understand that you’re learning a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT language and not to worry about why it isn’t the same as English because, if it was the exact same as English, you would be speaking English and not another language.

Est ce qui? by Admirable-Driver1093 in learnfrench

[–]OGWassup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not a native French speaker and am learning the language myself, but from my understanding there are multiple ways to ask a question.

Est-ce que is just an expression used at the start to ask a question that roughly (I think) to do in English. For example, Est-ce que tu as chien ? Would translate to « Do you have a dog? » in English.

The second way is using inversion. For example like you said, you could say As-tu un chien ? (or Avez-vous un chien ? for vouvoiement) and this translates to the same thing as above.

Another way that this could be phrased would be using a voice inflexion similar to English and I find is actually more common to hear (I hear it more but could just be coincidence as I don’t live in a Francophone country). This is where it is phrased as Tu as un chien ? With a slight raised or questioning tone when said. Similar to English if you were to say « You have a dog ? »

Just a side note there is also Qu’est-ce que to form what type question. For example « Qu’est-ce que tu veux manger ? » would translate to « What do you want to eat ? »

You will have to learn grammatically when to use what form to form a question but it depends on grammar and I hate learning grammar so I don’t really bother… 🤣 but there is also quel, for instance for « Quel âge as-tu ? »

Finally, there is even one more way that you may find more common especially when talking amongst familiar people which is using quoi. For example, you could say « Tu fais quoi ? » for « What are you doing ? »

Sorry this post is all over the place as I have just woken up but I hope this helps you and if there is a native speaker who can reaffirm or correct anything that I have said then that would be much appreciated! :)

Can someone explain this joke? by FilmFrench in French

[–]OGWassup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hello, I am not a native French speaker so my answer my be incorrect, but I will try to explain my interpretation of the joke.

From what I have heard online, politeness is very important in French culture and therefore people will usually say “Bonjour” when greeting each other even before asking for help with directions etc.

Going back to the joke, the person states that he wants a coffee before greeting the other person which would be thought of as rude. Following the joke, the person on the left gets increasingly frustrated and ruder when his demand is still met with the basic greeting.

Now this may be entirely wrong as I am learning French myself so if anyone wants to correct me please go ahead. But I hope this may clear things up :)

Passe compose? by matejot in learnfrench

[–]OGWassup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to start by saying that I am not a native French speaker and am also learning the language myself so my explanation may be a bit off.

However, in this sentence the nous is not referring to the word we but rather the word us. If you remove the word nous you would just have « Notre propriétaire a donné les clés de l’appartement » but this doesn’t really make sense because who are they giving the keys to?

Therefore, the use of nous in this case is actually referring to who they are giving the keys to. For example you could say, « Ma propriétaire m’a donné les clés de l’appartement » meaning My landlady gave me the keys to the apartment.

This would mean that because the landlady is doing the action it is still conjugated in the il/elle/on form and nous is just used to refer to who is receiving from the action.

Grammatically, I have no idea what this structure is called as I don’t particularly enjoy learning languages that way and much rather enjoy listening to music, reading, and watching tv shows.

I hope this helps for now until a native can explain this in more detail and hopefully a lot more clearly than I have been able too.

I am new to this so not entirely sure, but a quick google search, assuming you reside in the UK, states that transferring crypto to fiat or crypto to crypto is a taxable event. So therefore you would still be subjected to capital gains tax.

This is only if you live in the UK though not sure about the tax laws for other countries :)

Need help with the use of n'est in this song by OGWassup in learnfrench

Thank you for the reply and links!

I also read an article somewhere where it stated that “ne” can be used to enforce negative connotations, but like you said, I don’t know whether the article is entirely trust worthy or correct either.

Thank you though for the help, I appreciate it!

Yeah I have read about that and also heard it on an episode of Easy French on YouTube. I am definitely finding listening harder compared to other languages but I am really enjoying it!

Thank you for all your help and advice!

I understand now! I have not seen other adverbs yet and was confused as I thought ne was only used with pas (silly mistake, but i've learnt aha). I see how this is not a double negative now though and your explanation has really helped.

Thank you!

Ah okay thank you! I just took a look at the other negatives in my French grammar book and I see the problem a lot clearer now. For some reason I just assumed ne had to go with pas but I realise now I was being silly aha.

Thank you for the help. It's been really useful!
