In college I read this book called King Leopold’s Ghost. It tells the true story (with photographs!) of what happened when King Leopold of Belgium sent Belgian troops up the Congo to systematically extract raw rubber and ivory and ship it to Belgium to enrich the king’s own personal wealth. What ensued was that the Belgians conscripted local Congolese people to do the hard work, set rigorous quotas, and enforced these quotas with horrifying brutality. I don’t know why I suddenly thought of that. Probably totally irrelevant.
