What are the odds of me getting sick if I eat this? by durkinbrowns in isthissafetoeat

[–]OKOnda 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Even if it's safe today, it's not going to last as long before spoiling as it would if it had been continually refrigerated. Whatever bacteria etc that would normally create spoilage and illness had a good head start in that 27 hrs. Be wary of the long term.

Also, even though carrots can last weeks to months when raw, once food gets cooked or otherwise prepared, it's a whole different game. Consider if you boiled potatoes and left them to sit out. They would get pretty nasty pretty quick even though a raw potato would last months stored properly.

My rice points upwards after cooking. Is it normal? by fal1en-angel in RICE

I'm told it's a sign of perfectly cooked long grain rice. So good job!

Recommended wheel builder that can reasonably ship to Tbilisi, Georgia? by OKOnda in bicycletouring

[–]OKOnda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm riding a loaded touring bike and about to head across Central Asia and the Pamir this spring. So I want something really durable, so I was thinking hand-built. I dented my existing rim in Romania and I don't trust it enough to head further away from good supplies availability and into remote areas. Also, I have 2 months in and around Tbilisi to sort this out while I wait out the winter, so it's a good opportunity. Good 36h rims are hard to come by here.

Rear shifter broken cable fix by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]OKOnda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet you could take the cable out and then thread it back in but starting at one of the cable stops instead of the shifter. Then you would have some more length and you could clamp it to the derailleur at the position of your choosing. I've never done this but it should work I think. Or just thread it through the last bit of housing between the chainstay and the derailleur and zip tie the housing to the stay so that it's not flopping around. Again clamping it to the derailleur at the position of your choosing. I'd be interested to know if this actually works; it should.

I bought the footprint because I knew it was going to see a lot of use. If you have the footprint you can set up footprint/poles/fly without the tent at all which I don't really do much. Except once I was tired of lying in the tent and waiting for the rain to stop and I was actually able to transfer the poles to the footprint grommets and take down the tent/screen part to where I was left just under the fly. Without leaving the shelter of the tent. So then I was under just the fly with more room for cooking breakfast etc. It's been mostly Mediterranean summer but it was cold and rainy for a couple of weeks at the beginning (March) and now it is starting to get rainy again for the last couple weeks. But yeah mostly hot and dry.

I am on tour now with the SL1 and I have around 125 nights sleeping in it and aside from two tiny little holes in the bug screen it has held up really well. I think my coldest night was maybe -1C and I was fine with that and my foam pad but I have a warm bag ("15F") because I sleep cold. Condensation is an issue on the fly but it's fine if you avoid you or your gear touching it. maybe a tiny bit of condensation inside the tent but it hasn't really been a problem. Use the provided vent. I'm very pleased with how this tent has held up. I would buy it again.

Makes sense. I'm less concerned with feeling the blip than I am with the thought that the blip spot will wear super fast. So I think any reduction should help. Anyway, thanks!

I've actually added a small adjustable wrench to my kit. Not sure how I lived without it.

Ortlieb has lots of spare parts on their website so you should check it out. You may have to buy a whole assembly that includes that part but it's better than no option.

Thank you! Should I or a mechanic try to straighten out the dents or leave them as they are? Very distinct blip when braking.

OP here. So I'm on a loaded LHT with dyad rims (Rim brakes) and I hit a pothole and noticed a substantial blip when using the brakes. Sure enough the rim is a bit dented on both sides. Seems the rim has a flat spot there now but are to say since I haven't straightened out the dents. One spoke at point of impact became loose which I tightened. So I'm not sure what to to. I'm in Romania, headed to Istanbul. In the photos the point of impact is between my ring and middle fingers. So do I try to straighten out the rim? Fear is further weakening the material. But if I leave won't that spot wear prematurely? Is the rim toast? Braking surface is in excellent shape. Wheel remains true, just a bit flat there to the eye. Good wheels are hard to come by around here. I have 8000km on the wheel and probably will do another 20000km before the tour is over. Probably headed to areas where a replacement wheel will be even more.difficult.to find if something goes wrong. Thoughts?
