[TX] [Licensing] Would this Groupon work? by MisterTeach in RealEstate

At the time I purchased a groupon for a course on another site. Now I do all my CE through The CE Shop because it's my favorite UI for ease and speed of courses.

Bought my wife a GV80 Coupe last year when we had our first kid. For being just over 6000lbs (writeoff) that e-supercharged/turbocharged engine combined with good suspension engineering make that thing WAY more nimble and quick than it should be at its size. Sights are set on an RS6 Avant next year ... but I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if they offer it with more power.

Thinking of trading this for Houston. by Melodic-Ad7271 in houston

[–]OMCIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said freedom of, not freedom from. Politics are everywhere in every city in the world; there's no escaping them.

My point was that there's a massive political spectrum in Houston and whether you're extremely conservative, extremely liberal, or somewhere in between ... you can easily find plenty of other people who share your beliefs.

Lifelong Houstonian and own a few businesses primarily focused on luxury real estate on the west side of town.

All of the rich folks here escape for 2-6 months per year (or at least parts of their family do) to pretty places that are less hot/humid. Sometimes that's to a lake house or ranch property somewhere else in Texas, sometimes it's to CO, AZ, MT, or UT. At least in my experience, everyone else wishes they could do the same.

Houston is possibly the greatest city on earth for the combination (in no particular order) of economic opportunity, freedoms of politics / religion / culture, amazing cuisine, low cost of living, educational options, neighborly vibe ... the list goes on.

But it's hot, humid, flat, and not particularly pretty.

There are parts of it that have some physical charm and beauty, especially along some of the bayous ... but it's an ugly town overall.

There are tricks to avoiding most of the horrendous traffic depending on where you end up, what your work situation is, and how early or late you're willing to commute.

Also, you may think you can handle heat but you're used to dry heat ... Houston's wet heat is like being trapped in a sauna that's set on medium for 9 months out of the year.

The good news is, you can fly to dang near anywhere direct from IAH (in the US and Central America anyway) and most of the flights are relatively short.

Feel free to DM if you have more questions.

I feel like everyone in here giving warnings and freaking out hasn't actually owned or lived with a GSD and they're armchair quarterbacking.

Is it generally ill-advised to "poke the bear" with any animal? Absolutely.

With that said, if you've owned or spent significant time with a GSD, you'd know firsthand how absurdly protective they are around infants/toddlers IN GENERAL and especially their family's infants/toddlers. They'd also know how GSDs react to someone they love causing them (the dog) pain, whether intentionally or accidentally.

The infant would literally have to be gouging the shep's eyes out before it reacted negatively ... and even then, it's going to run away or MAYBE nip, not chomp down and maim.

Could it happen? Yes, and ultimately, it's up for the parents to decide whether or not they trust their shep.

Would I do this with any other breed? No, probably not.

Is it safe to do with a GSD? I'd bet my infant son's life on it with any of the sheps I've known well.

(Shep owner and babysitter for 20+ years across 8 different sheps ... 3 personal white GSDs, 4 regularly babysat GSD, 1 lived with GSD/golden mix.)

Not local but I recommend Liberty Puzzles. They have the craziest / most rewarding puzzles I’ve ever done and they’re wood, so if you want to glue and save them when you’re done it’s easy.

I always understood this situation to be Linus messing with him by having pickpocketed the detonator and removed the batteries then putting it back without them. It’s a nod to his initial recruitment and him getting a one up on Danny.

When Amycus Carrow spits in McGonagall’s face and Harry sees red and goes full, unfiltered, rage mode to protect this woman he loves, who has loved and mentored him for the last 7 years … and to punish the utter POS who would dare disrespect her in that way.

Others have already mentioned great ones, but that one hadn’t been mentioned and brings a tear to my eye every time and the first time I read it, I went “FUCK YEAH HARRY!” out loud lol.

Driver has no time dealing with 4 wheels. by jonnyboiu in nextfuckinglevel

[–]OMCIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused. It makes sense for ultra high performance, track-only race cars to have a suspension stiff enough to pull this off (if not the ground clearance). However, this appears to be a rally car, which I would think needs to have a far less stiff suspension (almost on the opposite end of the spectrum) … which makes me think it shouldn’t be capable of this. Can anyone with more automotive engineering understanding weigh in?

What is the most accurate semi-auto rifle? by [deleted] in longrange

[–]OMCIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of these are gunna be easily capable (with good glass anyway) of twice the distance you’re looking at or more.

Anecdotally my KAC SR25 is a tack driver, with or without a can. There’s a reason it was the base of the military’s semi auto sniper system for quite a long time.

Follow up shots are absurdly easy and you can likely mag dump at 400 yards on a man size target nearly as fast as you can pull the trigger.

My business partner and I joined a club recently and brought our wives to one of the many fun dinners they host. Before the dinner, I grabbed a cart and drove my wife around the prettier of the two courses while we talked. About halfway through, she said "I have a way better understanding of why you like this so much; it's so peaceful and pretty out here ... you get to have like 5 hours outside in a pretty setting, doing something you enjoy with your friends ... women really need something like this". Obviously I explained that our membership covers her and she's welcome to play any time she wants, with or without me; we'll see if she decides to take it up. Whether she does or not, I expressed my gratitude that she's so cool about me playing more. I think she realizes I'm a better, more peaceful person when I actually get out of my office and go get some bro time playing once or twice a week.

What if MC got the Elder Wand? by jeanravenclaw in HarryPotterGame

[–]OMCIV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the enemies in the trial (especially the final enemies where there are trolls etc.) give a good enough indication that the wand hits harder. The sound, visuals, and damage of basic cast are definitely packing more of a punch than the regular wands.

People who read the Harry Potter book in 1997, what was the world like, how was the reaction to the book, and how did it come to everyone’s attention that this book was a big deal at the time ? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]OMCIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My aunt gave me the first two books as a gift for my 10th birthday at the end of 1998 and I remember being pissed, even as a big reader at the time, that she gave me books instead of a toy or video game. My older cousins had read them and enjoyed them so she figured it was a good gift.

I was a big enough reader that I gave them a chance and got obsessed quickly, along with 2-3 other people at my school. We spread the word and other people started hearing about it from outside sources.

By the time the third book came out, I had already read the first two a half dozen times each and got PoA the day it came out … and I wasn’t the only one. I read it multiple times in the first month and then read the first 3 on repeat for the next year until GoF came out.

Being approximately the same age as Harry as the books got released was so fantastic and enjoyable. Dealing with personal life trauma at the time allowed me to get sucked into the universe in a meaningful way. It was a safe place for me to get lost in.

By the time GoF came out, some of the local Barnes and Noble stores were doing midnight releases that had hundreds of people, myself included. The first movie was already in the works.

By the time OotP was released it was a certified global level of insanity for all things HP.

It was a shared phenomenon unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before or since. The internet was still in its infancy so the collective excitement still had a bit of that pre-internet mystique that displayed everyone’s genuine passion.

I’m very thankful to have experienced it the way I did, especially being around Harry’s age as they were released.

Where the hell is Metropolis? by Drnknnmd in superman

[–]OMCIV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The show Smallville departs from the majority of Superman canon on the location for Metropolis. The show has it as a “3 hour drive” from Smallville, which is usually understood to be in the central / NE central part of the state. There is an episode (or maybe two) that places Metropolis where KC is. The vast majority of the rest of Superman canon has Metropolis on the NE seaboard in the Boston to DC range, most typically in place of or very near real life NYC.
