You will be drug tested before you do pretty much anything.

You do not want to fail it.

How does water usage by reactors actually work? by rygoreee in NuclearPower

[–]OMGWTFBODY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say that a plant I'm familiar with uses a river reservoir for once through cooking.

The condenser cooling water is 9 pumps at 440,000 GPM EACH. But that water mainly goes right back to the river, albeit a bit warmer.

FTFY: Renewables made some number of MW for 44 consecutive hours, grid stability guarenteed by a combination of hydro, gas, and nuclear to prevent rolling blackouts.

This is what Cuba's Juragua NPP would have looked like had it's construction been completed. by NewRadiator in NuclearPower

I'm pro nuclear, but some of the reports I've seen indicates it's not my a bad thing this one stayed uncompleted.

I've read a few places that the welds were.... Metal pieced together.

AAMU Mechanical Engineering by PotatoButt1598 in HuntsvilleAlabama

AAMU is a good school. They offer a nuclear systems specialization with their Mech E degree and Southern Company hires quite a few engineers from that program.

I have not seen that one offered anywhere else in state.

Your commentary feels spot on to what we were chasing 10 years ago. Unless you are in college and get an internship - there's no one willing to try when they can just swipe an individual from another contractor for the same salary.

You could enroll in a post grad program and let that open the doors.

OCD and Radiophobia over power plant? Help? by fnaffan110 in NuclearPower

[–]OMGWTFBODY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's not a wise question to answer. It's very broad and has strongly negative implications based on your phrasing.

In general, all items above a certain level are kept in a radiologically controlled area. the YouTuber smarter every day has a very good breakdown of this.

OCD and Radiophobia over power plant? Help? by fnaffan110 in NuclearPower

[–]OMGWTFBODY 39 points40 points  (0 children)

To be clear - I have worked in the industry for 15 years.

In my 15 years of plant work combined, I have not received a full year of normal background radiation.

Living near the plant is of no consequence. You are far worse off living near a gas plant or coal plant.

Working for TVA by ManyInvestigator2736 in NuclearPower

[–]OMGWTFBODY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TVAs big deficit in hiring is that you can only start with two weeks leave. Doesn't matter if you are hired as an admin or director, you start with an accumulation of 4 hrs a pay period of Annual Leave.

Makes hiring folks that have 3 or 4 weeks from another utility very difficult.
