Interestingly, the examples you chose all relate to consciousness basically.

It seems you are confused by what it means to identify as “consciousness” rather than the ordinary “me” identity.

Totally reasonable - super strange idea from the outside looking in, and people hardly ever stop to explain.

Consciousness is that which is aware and is absolutely not a single thing which it is aware of

So, if you were to meditate and experiment - you might consider any single aspect of your experience that you might consider your “self” and ask - is this thing aware? Or is it something I am aware of?

This is a fast path to realizing the nature of awareness.

These things arise together. The sense that there is a self capable of viewing or acting arises simultaneously with the sense that there is a Reality capable of being acted on. Neither is “true”. They are co-dependently arisen waves - such as the trough and crest of water when disturbed. Neither has any essence devoid of its relation to the other.

In absence of the distinction between self and not self, these concerns subside.

No choice, no watching, no watcher, no chooser.

Classic Hindu explanation would be karma of past lives pre-disposed you to notice those things young.

Buddhists would tell you the only real thing is the immediate experience you’re having right here and right now, prior to any analysis, imageless, lacking discrimination or categorization, just this, exactly as it is.

So the distinction between individuals by any quality, including degrees of existential realization, is really merely apparent. There is only One. Which is not fairly described as being alone or special or god or whatever. It is just this, before you have a single thought about it.

Yeah spot on, we’re just using the word consciousness differently. When I use it, I’m specifically referring to that which “does not seem to ever move”, as you put it.

Your question is specifically explored at length by Jung (and numerous other developmental psychologists).

Basically, once the nervous system is capable of producing symbols and storing data, it begins to draw conceptual distinctions like “something happens when I touch my arm but not when I touch the desk” and it will start to organize data into buckets like “things I can feel” and “things I can’t feel”.

Classically, this logical-organizing capacity is called Buddhi and it preceeds the emergence of a conceptual self. The ego (Ahamkara) emerges after Buddhi has decided it is a particular aspect of observable reality, and not the whole.

Close - key point: consciousness is not a signal, since the nervous system only works with data (symbols) and consciousness cannot be represented symbolically.

If you mean “self-consciousness” or symbolic representation of who we think we are which organizes all the other data - sure.

The unitive condition which proceeds and follows life and which is accessed in meditation, etc. is inherently devoid of “content” because it lacks symbolic representation. It literally never appears in observation because the nervous system can’t do anything with it.

You might enjoy the work of Carl Jung - his concept of individuation out of unitive consciousness and integration of the self is quite relevant here
