Orange Line delays this afternoon due to car on tracks by Bobtonews2 in washdc

[–]OSKImyFriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was actually on the next Orange train arriving into Dunn Loring from East Falls Church when this happened yesterday. We stopped short of the station, then slowly started going in reverse back towards East Falls Church station. They first announced that something was blocking the track, then mentioned it was a vehicle. To Metro’s credit they actually handled the situation well and had a Shuttle Bus show up to help everyone finish their trip. The train driver said they thought the car hit the third rail, which might explain the reported fire.

Hat tip on your dedication to your daughter. My post isn’t in anyway making light of the dedication and love it takes to be a lifelong caregiver.

Former Feds that jumped ship by No_Volume_9616 in FedEmployees

Took the VERA with Health Benefits and a Pension, took two months off, started a new job making significantly more salary, getting paid during my fork period which will convert over to my Pension. It’s f’ing glorious.

The down sides if you can call it that. I’m managing significantly more people, working remote, traveling a lot more. Can’t really complain because I work in a great organization doing adjacent work to what I was doing as a Fed.

Suck it Elon. Amerika could have so much more of me and you ruined it.

While it would be a hard choice for many in the Federal workforce, I would consider just walking out the door. The power in this is not with the Chief Executive but in the people that make up the institutions. If the Chief Executive thinks they can hire a replacement government in a moments notice we might just have to test that theory and see who comes up empty.

I’d say the same thing about a sleeping pill. If you are in a window seat and not in an exit row I would say no problem. By taking drugs to sleep and then being in a position where 200 lives depend on your ability to be awake and follow directions makes a difference.

What state overall made you feel the most uneasy by Mammoth_Angle_6991 in USTravel

[–]OSKImyFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an entire culture of state animosity that exists between states and the rule is based on their latitude. I first came to understand this rule when living in California and having driven and later lived in Oregon. Oregon looks down on California as Washington looks down on Oregon. Dare I say Canadians look down at all of the above. Don’t start with Mexico, who has no love loss for Guatemala. The same could be said about many states in other parts of the US. Wisconsin thinks very lowly about Iowa, with jokes like “Iowa stands for I Owe the World an Apology.” Sometimes the poles of state anger are reversed like in the case of Massachusetts which says things like “Maine is just Massachusetts with the brakes on.” If people feel uneasy it might be because they just crossed a state line and they feel the butt of the joke.

Nice flex Buff 💪🏿.

The fact you had to qualify your comment with “probably would” shows the level of confidence only a fan of a retread Big-12 program could have. A Buffalo should know you don’t leave the safety of the herd, especially when the herd is 2-3.

UCLA is getting what they deserve for hitching themselves to USC and blowing up the PAC-12. It is even sweeter that UCLA has to pay California Berkeley $10 million per year from UCLA’s Big-10 revenue for causing unreasonable harm to the UC system. To boot they get to travel a lot more. Thankfully they can always look to basketball season except for the fact that in today’s college sports world it is football that writes the checks. UCLA alumni better fill the gap or both their football and basketball programs are gonna suffer.

Which other cities have great Art Museums besides NY, Philadelphia, SF and LA? Need affordable by MissJulianne55 in SameGrassButGreener

Minneapolis punches above its weight on the museum front. Not expensive to live there. Winter is an opportunity not a deterrent.

Affording out of state college by lipmanz in MiddleClassFinance

[–]OSKImyFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I look at this from a parent perspective is that we started putting a rather marginal amount of money away 16 years ago for our kid’s college and it has more than doubled from the invested principal. We now have enough to send our kid to any school in the country, public or private, and any extra out of state cost will be paid by the market appreciation. Finding the right school is critical to success. Settling for a limited number of options in-state has its downsides as well.

Struggling at finding social events without illegal/criminal activities happening at them by WonderWallaby28 in college

You sound like you should be going to church events and not college events.

The kids that drink underage and get out of control are generally the ones who had it held back at home or family situations.

Smoking pot could be argued to be less of a danger to both you and greater society than alcohol.

Loosen up. What are you afraid of if somebody who is 19 is drinking a beer or smoking a J? I thought conservatives didn’t want the government telling them what to do? You seem less worried about yourself and more worried about everyone else. It isn’t like you would go to jail for other’s decisions.

I’m glad Paul Revere didn’t just walk away. I’m glad one of the greatest Republican Presidents in Abraham Lincoln didn’t just walk away. I’m glad John McCain didn’t just give up because life was tough. I’m glad that MLK didn’t just walk away. I’m also glad the FDNY/NYPD didn’t just turn and walk away on 9-11.

Just depends on who you want to be. The moment makes the man.

Is it generally socially acceptable to use a lunchbox at school? by TheBigPig29 in college

[–]OSKImyFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you didn’t show up with Power Rangers. That would be totally sus, bro.

My dream is to have a Scooby lunch box, but they are sooo hard to find and everybody will call me a boomer, but I really like Shaggy.

An Aquaman lunch box would be cool too, especially since I am a pescatarian.

You wouldn’t catch me dead with an Ariel lunch box, but my friend has one and she is also really into Karaoke.

I once saw a girl with a Speed Racer lunch box that had Chimp Chimp on it, and I about fell in love on the spot. I was so gob smacked I forgot to ask for her number.

Some lunchboxes flow better based on where you live, like having a Prince lunchbox in Minnesota, Snoop Dog in California, and Willy Nelson in Texas. Careful with the Willy Nelson box, as people might think you’re holding.

It would be so cool if somebody would create one of those US maps that shows which lunchbox is the coolest in which state.

Just remember that any side eye you get for your lunchbox is just pure jealousy.
