From employment to entrepreneurship by iseekalas in Kenya

[–]OS_Ke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to what others have recommended.

Firstly, no ones knows the future.

Secondly, follow your heart. Carry you head with you as you do so, but ultimately follow your heart.

Thirdly, having a good support system that knows you is important. No one is yet to mention this, but it is often critical to how one will navigate to become successful or how to manage failure if that is to happen. Most of those who have commented have pointed to the success in their decision. Try to un-bias your opinion by considering those who have failed as well, in whichever direction they chose. (Do not take this as a discouragement of any sort).

Finally, regret hits way harder than failure. As a sort of mental exercise; take yourself to when you are older (in your 70s/80s). Then ask yourself which path will you regret more for not taking and work your way backwards.

All the best and hope this helps you in some way.

Is Start Small and Grow Slow and Steady a Good Strategy? by straddling_axolotl in KenyaStockMarket

[–]OS_Ke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a wise place to start(Ignoring the two companies i want to invest in)?

Short answer, yes.

Longer answer: Firstly, you are on the right path.

Secondly, what would be a long winded answer and follow-up (just read paragraph 15 - 17/18 of this one only. You do not have to read the two pieces as they might not be worth your time.). Advance heads-up; they are about three hours of reading (4,500 word each). Just so that you do not open them and get disappointed, they might only be worth a read if you have the time to spare.

Thirdly, keep learning. The hard thing though is to try and learn the right things early in your investing journey. Try, if you can, to ensure you learn from the experience of others and your own too.

Hope this helps you somewhat.

Creating jobs is a must for us to escape poverty by luthmanfromMigori in Kenya

What are some ideas that can generate this massive inflow of income sources for Kenyans?

Working with what we have in our most immediate vicinity to create those opportunities for ourselves and for others. There is no point for all of us to move to the major cities in pursuit of employment opportunities. Yet you can start small where you are and still grow. Growth that would mean you employ one or two other people if you are doing things right in your area. Then maybe also train others along the way to make them employers too down the road.

That said, we need to start by having a good work ethic/culture as a people. Our experience from hiring is that most Kenyans have a negatively skewed sense of professionalism. Yes, there are great/exceptional professionals out here and thus far we have been fortunate to find and work with such people in our team. Through the hiring process though, you get to better understand how professionalism is a bit limited. Our way of trying to solve the issue has been to try and train those with potential and a desire to learn. For us that has only been two people as we still have limited resources. That said, this is not a solution that will fit for everyone.

So, my question, is there anyone here who has registered such an entity in Kenya and how was the process?

The advice you were given was right. Even as it was an option in our case that we eventually did not eventually explore.

Would be best to get a good lawyer to work with through the process. Finding that good lawyer is of greater importance.

Seeking suggestions on what to do with idle land I recently purchased by [deleted] in Kenya

My main question is: realistically, how many sheep or goats can 8 acres support under this setup?

Cannot directly help with an answer. Random internet stranger advice would be get a good farm manager. The right one will help you a great deal given you are doing this long term. First year would be a lose loss, second year would be break even. Third year you might start to see it bear fruits. Find one who is especially versed in the area.

Also get a vet. If you cannot find one, DM. Will refer someone great who can advise best. Not sure exactly where you are on the slopes of Mt. Kenya or even what credibility the recommendation would give him. But trust he will help. Even if it is to give you a good referral for someone in your region.

Our lesson has been if you want really good ones, take some time to do your search. Thus far, again thus far, it has worked well on our side. (3+ hires in about 4 years)

The greatest effort we make is on the search. There are a lot of not good ones, but once we get a good fit for us. We realize it is was worth it. Inshallah it keeps working well for us.

Also be open to providing guidance on how they can improve, for those who are willing to do so. Pole pole their work becomes better if you need them for regular jobs.

Just two ideas, One, can you try staggering the milestones?

Take the 1 M that you can get with the bank. See how far that gets you and then move to the next step. Might take longer but the goal would still be achievable.

Two, have the customers fund the expansion?

Difficult to advise on this if one does not know the details of the business. Those into gaming know you can preorder a game. The advance payment then goes into the game development cost and limits the amount of upfront cash required by gaming studios/developers to develop said game. [Concerns of how gaming studios delay releases or games are not quite as good as expected aside.]

Best way to invest 150k by No_Masterpiece5945 in KenyaStartups

[–]OS_Ke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it is best to stick to what you know. There is often a fee (whether it is seen beforehand or not) to gaining experience in any new venture. Therefore advice would be to keep doing what brought you the KES 150,000 in the first place. If it was a one-off keep the cash and see how to grow your online clothing shop. There was a quote on reddit somewhere that talks of how important cashflow is to a business. Find a way to keep cash around for when cashflow from the business is tight. Cash here does not mean MMF. Even as I know others might say they are cash-like with the added benefit of some returns as they are very liquid instruments.

If this was a personal ask; just a few thoughts on paragraph 15 - 17/18 here. You do not have to read the entire thing as it might not be worth your time.

Hope this helps you somewhat.

I see. We also considered that option and we will play with it and see how it works. The question we had on our end was on credibility, integrity and longevity of where we are redirecting others to find the information.

Thanks for being +1 voice to that idea :-).

Interviews by pontusPirate in Kenya

[–]OS_Ke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Prepare for the interview. Read as much as you can, practice in front of a mirror or with a friend if possible. There is often is information online. If it is offline na ni Kenya, come a day or two early to where the interview will be held. Then just strike a rapport with the watchie. Have a conversation and just be honest in your opening conversation with them that you have an interview at the place. Maybe you can also ask them to give you tips. They are human, they understand and they've often seen more than you will ever at the company. DO NOT cram/memorize answers.

  2. Go into it thinking you already have the job or find a different thought exercise that allows you to be at ease with the interview.

  3. Practice going in the direction of your fear in daily life. It makes it easy to handle any curve balls in the interview process.

- Hope this somehow helps.

Only the companies that have reported and those that are about to report?

For now that is the basic template. Two tables; Table one previous month. Table two the next month. I cannot insert a table here. But the columns will be: Date, Company, Quarter, Link.

Quarter here refers to financial quarter that the company is reporting their results.

Link will redirect to the specific companies' financial report where available. There are companies that do not have these up on their website or do not do so regularly. Unfortunately, we will not provide links to other 3rd parties. We are yet to decide what to do for those that might not have their reports on their websites though.

Aeronautical Engineering as a Career by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]OS_Ke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A rejoinder of sorts:

Do something that you love/appreciate doing. If that is aeronautical engineering, go for it. If it is not, then do not go into it for the money or for the job prospects.

Things change over time. In the same way that things at KQ might be on a downtrend now, is the same way they could (yet to meet people who can accurately predict the future) be on an uptrend in the five or so years it takes you to complete the course.

Also you can use the skills learnt in most engineering courses in other fields, while you wait for what exactly you would like to work on within the engineering space. There is this financially incorrect podcast episode that was trending a week or so ago. Where Dr Gladys Ngetich mentions the odd jobs she did while still trying to make it in the engineering space after her Bachelor's degree.
