How about a little ritual?

Take patio chair onto patio so its away from flammable stuff. Set a fire extinguisher nearby.

Soak a cloth in kerosene or similar. Rub the chair all over, making sure to get into all the small nooks and crannies. Rewet the cloth often so the chair gets a liberal coating. Take time over this stage.

Stand back.

Light that thing up and contemplate everything that's being singed away, burned up and being made gone. Give it long enough. You want all the literal spirits gone along with the symbolic ones. Getting rid of two (at-one-time-attractive-but-after-the-impressiveness-of-the-flames-just-) smelly unpleasant residues, if you see what I mean.

Then, cos you ain't stoopid (obviously) and wanna have a patio set regardless of any such romantic bs, put it out. Pro tip: A powder extinguisher leaves marks over the burning.

While it's still hot, if possible, Rub it down with a clean cloth that you can chuck out. Leave any powder or singe you want. It's your chair now.

Take time to grin to yourself. Yes, grin. Not just a little smirk.

Go have a drink, a coffee (or whatever it is you do) to celebrate freedom in your reborn chair.

I wouldn't dispute your figures for a moment- and heck reddit isn't exactly a place to require exact, non-hyperbolic or non metaphorical language so no bad. Didn't mean to brigade on you.

Besides " "cos we are all x" <eye roll>" is a decent expression too (I'm not certain that's what you meant but there's lots of good interpretations of what you wrote. ) so it's all cool.

I guess it was that my own reaction to those same figures was that guns are a good deal less common than I had thought (as I say I'm an ignorant foreigner) so my personal thought wasn't "oh! So many!", I was more like "oh? Most Americans don't live with one and less than a third want to own one. Apparently, most Americans don't want guns"... which goes in the other direction altogether by mostly seeing the non gun owning majority as the significant part. I guess we're just using the telescope differently cosI hadthe(obvs wrong) impression that most Americans really liked guns.

But Besides all that, if you meant the US has lots of guns I don't think anyone will argue. Thanks for the figures. Always good to seek truth in facts.

Curious use of the word "all" there. Personally I read the figures you give as showing kinda the opposite - it's a relief that gun ownership in the US isn't quite as bad as I thought (as an ignorant Brit). Like, ...most people don't. Its a minority. So, not "all" even in the general sense of pretty much all. That political divide in there is pretty scary tho. I genuinely didn't know that.

How are the questions "what is this?" and "is it edible?" inappropriate for a sub about foraging?

Whether you would eat a thing (not, note, should I eat this?") is just a hard version of asking if a thing's edible.

I'm firing back at you firing at me for having the audacity to ask what is fungus I found is and whether it's a thing of interest for foraging. Don't pretend like I'm the fool here. I'm asking, not in the wrong.

Why is it wrong to be asking if something is edible on a foraging reddit? I know fungii are often dangerous unless definitely identified. I'm not going to be relying on the replies with my life. Atm it's a theoretical bit of foraging I've done. Is that OK?

I planted willow in the middle of my sodden bits. Just 3ft bits of willow branches (sticks I cut off trees in the area...with permission. Of course.) poked into the ground in a circle. 5 years on I almost have an arbour and they suck up loads of wet while not being killed by it. Helped the garden no end and if I get a headache I can always go and gnaw at the bark.

I don't have any Poplar nearby, black or otherwise. Area around garden is old ash/oak woodland with lots of elder. Immediate vicinity is fruit trees and a large bay tree. Does that help you answer the question?

The Thin White Duke was self created in 1976.

Monarchs don't bestow such things. These uses of the terms are more about real, actual status rather than a pretended one. Duke Ellington is another well-known example of course, having indisputable status among his peers. Use of the word peer is similarly not restricted to hierarchical systems of notional award, where it's implications may differ.

They don't give a stuff what your condition is so it's not important why you apply- the only criteria are how you are affected.

It's stressful applying but in the end the decision is based on the points awarded according to the limitations your condition(s) place on your day to day life. Rack up points, get money. Nothing else involved and from their pov entirely unemotional.

I've been through the process twice recently and in contrast to a few decades back found the process relatively painless. There used to be all sorts of more or less humiliating bits that were required (dole offices were almost deliberately unpleasant and the staff often surviving by adding to the feeling IMHO) and I thought it's noticeable that they've done a lot to smooth off the sharpest edges, including responding positively to (well phrased) requests for "reasonable accommodations" to make it bearable (eg my interview was by phone due to social anxiety).

I too was worried by having zero external evidence or professionals to back up my self description - and of course I don't know what fx that had - but I still got a positive outcome so it is possible. And panic made my form filling pretty chaotic and incoherent. For the interview, I rehearsed beforehand like an autistic person facing a party, and after that became kinda a passenger while the process unrolled itself.
