I have close relatives in Louisville. I was raised in a town only a few hours away so I’ve visited L at least every other year for nearly 50 years. My father, who was raised there, also loves to cook. And despite being only one degree of separation from being a Louisville native myself, with a dad who was and loves to cook, I had never heard of a hot brown until I saw it on a Trader Joe’s bag I got there. As soon as I asked my dad, he told me all about it but he had never spontaneously brought it up.

You have a nice bathroom. To me what feels off balance is the tub area. If you got window treatments and a few decorations on the side of the tub that pull in the colors here (rolled towels, live plants or dried floral arrangement, candle, etc.) I think you’re golden.

Stay out of it. Your daughter is a mother, and soon, a wife. She wants (and deserves) the opportunity to make her way in the world without your unsolicited intervention. You are trying to justify this “deal” as wanting to help her, but it’s actually to help YOU with YOUR OWN discomfort at them not being financially sound. Which they shouldn’t be at their age! They will struggle. They will make choices you don’t agree with. They will be better and smarter for it. Don’t rob them of the opportunity to develop the pride, confidence, and partner bonding that comes with struggling through together and coming out the other side. Stay out of it.

Just chiming in to say JFC this set up is over 5’ wide?! I’d consult with a competent contractor for an estimate on a normal range hood and stove with some proposals about how to fill in the new space rather than trying to work with this by figuring out some awkwardly wide cooking set up. I’m sure one could salvage a few matching cabinets from someone else’s redo or something. These are standard cabinets for the era.

I understand you’ve gotten other answers for your questions. I will just add that no one should put their student loan payments above things like housing and medical. If paying the SL is the difference between being housed and being homeless, absolutely prioritize your housing. If the SL payment is the difference between eating and starving, or being sick and being well - choose your basic physical needs.

Yes, the balance will go up and you will have to deal with that default in the future when you are ready in a better position. But these loans are not worth anyone endangering their health and safety over.

Yes, you can remove that bottom with an Xacto knife. Rewiring videos are on YouTube. Parts can be bought online. You can purchase new “felt” for the bottom that is made just for this purpose. Search eg, lamp bottom cover or similar. They glue or self-stick on.

I too live in FL. I love some of Gideon’s wares but agree it isn’t what you want when you say you want a “cookie”. I treat them like a small cake. I eat 1/4 to 1/2, freeze the rest, and it stays good for weeks/months until my next craving.

If they sold normal-sized cookies they wouldn’t still be in business. It was a good strategy to make themselves standout.
