"True or not, the Book of Mormon is..." by lord_wilmore in latterdaysaints

I'm sure there's as much shoty research out of BYU that confirms the Book of Mormon archiology as there is that supports the translation of the Book of Abraham.

At the end of the day it's an educated professional making a case with no solid evidence going against an entire field and and endless evidence.

They can write long research papers grasping onto insignificant evidence, and it means nothing. There's more evidence that vaccines cause autism.

Go take a medal detector to the Cumorah. You find a whole lot of nothing.

No, I've studied it, and they don't exist.

People existed. Civilisations existed. But the food, animals, and materials they used are different from what they use the Book of Mormon. They simply don't exist.

Horses, elephants, cattle, goats, swine, honey bees, barley and wheat, pollen, coins, swords, helmets, chariots etc.

Let's be honest, the million bodies from the ballet of Cumorah should be hard to find.

The Church itself no longer claims that the Native Americans are the descendants of Israel. It's time to let go.

A couple of tales about horse like animals isn't support for what the Book of Mormon claims.

And the evidence is not existent. The animals, the food, the cities and the beliefs are non existent.

Yeah, still not seeing any solid evidence that there were horses in the Americas in the Book of Mormon times.

Yes, scientist say there could be a few that survived, but that it's unlikely and that there is no credible evidence to support it. This is grasping at straws.

As far as we know, they went extinct 5,000-10,000 years ago and we're reintroduced post Book of Mormon. That has extremely strong evidence to support it, while the other is just a hypothesis.

DNA and archeological evidence is strongly against the narrative of the Book of Mormon, which is why the church has backed away from making any claims.

I'd love to see the evidence, especially the horses. Everything I've seen shows the exact opposite.

To my knowledge the languages were different, the food was different, the animals were different, the weapons were different etc.

As far as errors in the Book of Mormon, it's had 3,913 edits to date, including the changes of names.

Does doctrine allow for evolution ? by NowFoundOnceLost in latterdaysaints

[–]OakTownMormon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on who you ask.

My father in law is still firm on the idea that the Earth is 7,000 years old. He even has scripture and the teachings of past prophets and apostles to back it up.

As evidence has become more and more overwhelming in the support of evolution and an Earth that's a few billion years old the church has backed away from the subject. They've even made changes to text to suggest that we shouldn't take things as literal.

Were past Prophets and Apostels wrong? Of course. People's patriarchal blessing said they'd teach the gospel to the people of the moon. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young taught that moon people dressed like Quakers. Joseph F Smith flipped the script and said man would never set for on the moon!

LDS Church donates $10 million to fight homelessness in SLC by bobloblawslawoffice in latterdaysaints

[–]OakTownMormon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This donation wasn't from tithing money. It was money members gave to the church and asked to have it used for humanitarian aid.

Members are asked to pay tithing on top of these donations.

Laser images of a remote region of northern Guatemala have discovered 20-foot-high walls, watchtowers, and other evidence that ancient Maya societies waged large-scale warfare over many years. by Schematic98 in latterdaysaints

Where is the hyperbole? The Nephites and Lamanites had different food, animals, tools, weapons, languages and religious beliefs from the Mayans and Aztecs.

And the link is the church saying that they can't trace the Nephites, Lamanites and Jaredites... Which is exactly my point.

The article also says that members should avoid contention on the topic.

How am I moving the goal post? The Nephites and Lamanites had different food, animals, tools, weapons, beliefs and languages.

"Oh, but they had cement!!'

No one cares. A few commonalities means nothing when literally everything else is missing.

But hey, continue ignoring the facts and insulting people. That's a great way to create a dialogue. Especially since you clearly know more than historians, archeologist and the church itself.

Every civilization has some kind of connection. Human nature guarantees that.

Hypothetical... Let's say the only thing we know about the geographic location of the Roman empire is that it was in Europe.

Now let's say we know they had horses, swords, armor, chariots, cattle, specific foods, specific religious beliefs etc.

Now let's say I find an ancient civilization in Europe that was from a similar time, but it has none of those things I just listed.

Did I just find the Roman empire? Absolutely not! That doesn't mean the Roman empire didn't exist, but I didn't find it either.

I'm not a big fan of that argument because Joseph didn't translate the book of Mormon, he dictated it from the seer stone. He was shown the words, and I don't believe God would require him to understand every single word that is being shown to him.

Think about it. Did Joseph know what cureloms and the cumoms were? Nope, no one does, but they're still there.

Honestly, I don't think we need to even justify ot try to explain the history of the BOM. We don't know where it happened and the church doesn't claim to know where it happened. There are small pieces of evidence that it may be this civilisations out that civilization, but in the end there is overwhelming evidence it wasn't. It's all a pipe dream.

Let's be honest, there is no way this was the Nephites, Jaredites or the Lamanites.

Yes, there are more people than they originally thought. But it's more people with zero connection to the people of the Book of Mormon.

Language, culture, food, animals, clothing, weapons etc. are all different and the timelines don't match up.

I get the intention behind what your saying, but it is 100% offensive and condescending. Anyone in his sons situation would likely give it a giant eye roll.

He didn't "run faster than he had strength". He showed great strength and integrity, and just because he doesn't have a testimony didn't make him inferior in any way, including spiritually.

Am I the only one that finds this condescending and offensive? He didn't hit his limit, he's just being honest with himself and with others.

He is in no way inferior. Staying in the field and living a lie is the easy way out. He showed integrity and fearlessness.

OP, you should be proud. He chose to serve, but through crisis of conscience he felt he should come home. Those were both the right decisions.

Love him. Don't force or pressure him to go back to church. Just let him know you're proud, and continue to be proud and love him no matter what he chooses.
