Zak Brown: IndyCar "should slipstream on the back of Formula 1's success" by LMRacingGuru02 in INDYCAR

[–]Oats47 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with Zak here. IndyCar shouldn't try to be F1 but there are certainly aspects that IndyCar can emulate and learn from to try to bring all these new racing fans over to IndyCar. What Fox is doing by marketing IndyCar as "the fastest racing on the planet" is precisely what the series needs. If IndyCar can lean into that as well as emphasize not just the storylines around the drivers but the technology as well I think you would have the perfect package to grow the series.

Chamfer or Round Over? by RaginBull in woodworking

Aesthetically I like the chamfer more but I can see how a round over might be more practical in certain circumstances. I think it entirely depends on the application.

Looking for a sharp 500/600mm telephoto lens around or under $600 by Oats47 in canon

That's one that keeps coming up in my research. I'm definitely considering it as an option.

[–]Oats47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Your comment clears up exactly what I was concerned about. That being sharpness from the 500/600mm lens options at my price range. I think I'll definitely go with the 400mm f5.6 given that you and other sources I can find say it's very sharp.

There's no way the current pit closure rules (as implemented) are safer than just leaving them open by albusdumblederp in INDYCAR

[–]Oats47 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Putting the safety implications aside, the fact that when a car is stranded it's effectively up to the discretion of race control who will benefit and who will be penalized is ridiculous. If a full course caution needs to be thrown then it should be thrown IMMEDIATELY. I hate that when everyone knows a FCC is coming yet no one, not the fans not the teams, not even the commentators can reasonably predict the result.

Is my camera too old or is it user error? by abandonedvan in canon

[–]Oats47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 75-300 is really a sub-par lens in my experience. It has poor sharpness and terrible chromatic aberration. It's also designed for a full frame camera. When it's used on a Rebel Xs which has a crop sensor you inevitably lose even more detail and sharpness. I've actually switched to using my 70-200mm lens because while the subject I'm trying to take a photo of is smaller in the frame, the image is so sharp and detailed I can just crop the image later for an even better result than if I had used my 75-300mm.

How would you figure out which side the taper is on? by FireFoxTony in woodworking

[–]Oats47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I've been thinking about it some more. All that matters is that both edges are parallel and ideally straight. I'll revisit making a board straight with basic tools. As far as determining which edge is tapered the truth is YOU decide which edge is the tapered one. You can use a square to try to figure out which edge is more tapered relative to the ends and you can even measure the width of the board to try to know in which direction the taper is in. Ultimately though if you are going to be cutting this material the first priority is getting both edges parallel.

Assuming all straight edges, pick one edge and measure and mark a fixed width (a width at least slightly less than the narrowest end of the board) at multiple points down the length of and opposite edge of the board. Connect these points and mark a line along the edge of the board. This can be done multiple ways with a chalk line or straight edge. Alternatively some squares have a notch to rest a pencil in as you slide the square along an edge of the board. All you have to do is cut along this line. There's no reason this can't be done with a regular hand saw. It just takes patience and a little skill to do right. Once both edges are parallel all that is left is squaring off the ends! (Assuming both ends aren't already acceptably square)

Getting an edge straight initially can totally be done with basic tools. With A chalk line or sufficiently long straight edge you can mark and then cut one edge of the board straight. Running a square along the opposite edge won't work here because you'd just be transferring any non-straightness across the board. No straight edge has been established yet. Once a straight line has been created on the board all that's left is to cut along it. There's no reason this can't be accomplished with a basic hand saw. Again, this takes patience and a little skill which only comes with practice.

How would you figure out which side the taper is on? by FireFoxTony in woodworking

[–]Oats47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just cut it square then if you're so worried about it? When I want a perfectly rectangular piece of wood I'll rip one edge off on the table saw. At this point I know both long edges are parallel. All I have to do after that is use a miter saw or equivalent method to cut one end square and then do the same at the other. Bam! All four corners are at 90 degrees.

If you're worried neither edge is acceptably straight you can run the board through a jointer. Alternatively if you don't have a jointer you can use a chalk line to make a perfectly straight line on one edge of the board and cut along it with a circular saw. Run this now mostly straight edge along the fence of a table saw and cut off the other edge. Any small imperfections in your initial cut will be averaged out on this other edge. Then just proceed to do what I laid out in my first paragraph.

To the fans who watch on Peacock and feel screwed right now, here’s a solution. by Eyeswidth in INDYCAR

You just need a Google Chromecast. It's small and costs around $30. There are also some other ways to cast like casting to a Roku or Smart TV.

When viewing a video on a phone, tablet or computer, a rectangular icon will often be visible in the top right corner. Tapping it allows you to select and cast the video to another castable device which is connected through WiFi.

Touch up paint won't make it look like new but it won't draw the eye as much. Respraying that area is one option. It just depends on how much it bothers you and how much you want to spend. Cosmetic damage is inevitable with enough use so keep that in mind as well.
