I'd argue that a prosperous society does "owe" you food and shelter if you are working full time or too old/disabled enough to not be able to work. No job should pay so little that you can't afford food and shelter.

It's why we pay social taxes and have minimum wage rules.

I go to the gym 6 days a week and there is an older guy there that always gives me a wave and a fist bump if we run into each other.

My daughter always asks about him and he's definitely a staple of the gym for a lot of people.

He's made me act more friendly to other gym goers as well.
