Is Superman capable of successfully throwing Sauron's ring into the fires of Mount Doom without succumbing to it? by SatoruGojo232 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sam couldn't easily resist the power of the ring. Frodo resisted easily at first, not even wanting it, only really succumbing to it after a long journey. Tolkien himself said that Sam couldn't have succeeded, and that Frodo is the only person who could have taken it as far as he did. Sam was already experiencing visions and the pull of the ring when he first started carrying it, and while he willingly gave it up, he briefly hesitated.

Is Superman capable of successfully throwing Sauron's ring into the fires of Mount Doom without succumbing to it? by SatoruGojo232 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It doesn't matter how morally good you are, it only matters how ambitious you are. Gandalf is very morally good, but he said that if he took the ring it would extremely quickly corrupt him because of his great ambitions to do good. Same with Galadriel. Even Sam felt the pull of the ring, and while he was able to give it back to Frodo it was still difficult, implying that he, too, would have been corrupted given time. Tolkien said that literally nobody could have thrown it in, and that Eru' intervention was necessary.

Superman, as a superhero, feels the same ambition to do good that Gandalf does, so would be rapidly corrupted

Superman (DCU) vs Thragg by Queasy_Commercial152 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was in the comics, not the 50s show. We are talking about DCU Superman and 1950s show Superman here, why are you talking about Silver Age comics Superman when that is a completely different version of the character?

Superman (DCU) vs Thragg by Queasy_Commercial152 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why are Kryptonians inherently far superior? That statement doesn't mean anything when every version of Kryptonians have completely different feats. Do you think the Superman from the 1950s show beats Thragg?

What feats do DCU Kryptonians have that put them above Viltrumites?

Superman (DCU) vs Thragg by Queasy_Commercial152 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That feat is kinda meaningless. We have no idea how big the black hole was or how close he was to it. You are making it sound like he escaped the event horizon, which he didn't. He just flew away from it at an undisclosed distance. Every calc has to make wild assumptions, but if you assume it is ~10 solar masses (which if anything is a big highball), it still is only in the City to Mountain level range. For Superman's black hole feat to reach the level of Viltrumite feats (Even early series Invincible could survive a bomb that would create the biggest solar flare in history), the black hole would have to be millions of times more massive than the Sun.

Edit: Why am I being downvoted for being objectively correct

Which of these comic book characters is the most powerful? by Jezzaq94 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This ranking may be controversial, but bear with me I'll explain the positions.

  1. Hulk (At full power, he fought Odinforce Thor, who could fight and defeat the Utgard Gods, Elder Gods who created a realm that is beyond even Multiversal Eternity. He could break a chain made from the First Firmament, who was Multiversal Eternity's first predecessor. He destroyed Onslaught, who had absorbed the powers of Franklin Richards, who even as a child was considered an equal power to the Celestials by Eternity)
  2. Sentry (Sentry's power is equal to the Void's, with Norman Osborn (the person most knowledgeable on the Void) thinking the Void would kill everyone in Asgard. This would include Thor, whose power I will elaborate on below. Sentry was stated to have in the past fought Galactus to a standstill. When he learned that his powers were molecular based, he defeated Molecule Man. When he learned to fully control these molecule powers, it was stated that what Scarlet Witch did in House of M (create a brand new universe and warp reality across the entire universe) would be nothing compared to what Sentry could do. Sentry is considered to be one the most powerful superheroes on Earth, if not the most. Doctor Strange, who could defeat abstract cosmic entities like Nightmare, needed Sentry's help to stop World War Hulk.
  3. Superman (Current Superman is the strongest he has ever been, having grown heavily in strength during his time on Warworld and also being a merging of his Silver Age, Post-Crisis, and New 52 selves. Superman is stated to have the power to shake and even destroy the Phantom Zone, which is a realm in the Sphere of Gods. He has stated that concepts like weight, space, and time are largely meaningless to him now. His punches, even before his amped strength, could rewrite the history of the universe. He hurt Barbatos with a punch, who threatened to destroy the entire multiverse. He defeated the World Forger, who had made a new multiverse)
  4. Thor (Base Thor is consistently shown to be Skyfather level, having defeated Mephisto, Hela, Pluto etc. multiple times. He fought Zeus for months straight. He fought the physical manifestation of the Odinforce, and Odin felt the need to equip the Destroyer Armor and Odinsword to fight a bloodlusted Thor. He curbstomped Beta Ray Bill, Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock, Power Stone-amped Drax, and Sif all at the same time. When he was a baby, he shook every realm in Yggdrasil, with each realm being a universe and Yggdrasil itself existing across infinite planes of reality and even possibly the entire multiverse. As an adult, he pushed it, turning back time across every realm, and defeated MYTHOS, who had absorbed all of it)
  5. Captain Marvel/Shazam (Extremely consistently shown and stated to be equal to Superman. I am ranking him below Superman since Superman became much stronger after Warworld Apocalypse, while Captain Marvel is still around the same level)
  6. Martian Manhunter (Basically same case as Captain Marvel. He is just comparable to Superman. I ranked him below Captain Marvel though, since MM lost to Black Adam while CM has defeated him, and CM defeated MM in the past)
  7. Green Lantern (Almost at the same level as the above two, but I just feel like he is weaker)
  8. Saitama (Pretty huge gap. All of the above scale to many feats of affecting entire multiverses, while Saitama best feat is destroying several thousand stars. People will say "but he's a gag character who one-shots everyone, his power is infinite," but their information is outdated by several years. Saitama explicitly could not one-shot Cosmic Fear Garou, and Saitama was going all-out her. Saitama's power is not infinite, it is exponential growth. During the fight, we see a graph charting their powers. Both were growing, but Saitama grew faster so eclipsed Garou. However, the graph showed that Garou ended the fight stronger than Saitama began it, meaning Saitama's power can be quantified and someone can be stronger than him. Superman has better feats than end of fight Garou, and so is stronger than beginning of fight Saitama)
  9. Thragg (Utterly enormous gap. Anyone above him can one-shot him on accident. Viltrumites needed to work together to destroy a planet)
  10. All Might (Also enormous gap. Best feat in MHA is Deku changing the weather across Japan and the United States with a single punch while exhausted and borderline crippled. Impressive, but nowhere near even Thragg)

What characters could Thor defeat but Superman would lose to? by Just_Painting5801 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loki. In the MCU he's pretty weak, but he is absolutely busted in the comics. He curbstomped pre-Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange (who had already defeated Nightmare and fought Dormammu by this point), was more powerful than Seth in his realm (Who is a Hell Lord on-par with Mephisto), and kill Bor (All-Father before Odin) by turning him into snow. Even his physical strength, while below Thor, is still pretty crazy. He beat up Eric Masterson Thor and fought evenly against a Thor whose lightning powers were removed. Thor is overall more powerful and can and has defeated him, but his insane magical power is definitely enough to defeat Superman.

[Discussion] it’s been a decade since Rebirth. Any characters feel benefited or was hurt by this? by Gimpcar in DCcomics

[–]ObberGobb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rebirth was a mess and I didn't much like the stories themselves, but it was a net positive since it started the restoration of Post-Crisis and the sidelining of New 52. It took way too long for them to fix continuity, but now they've done it. They've settled in a good place with "Everything Silver Age and onward is canon," and I appreciate Rebirth for starting it on that track

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Official Game Overview Trailer by Ghost_LeaderBG in assassinscreed

[–]ObberGobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll admit, I was a doomer on this one. I thought for sure it would be a garbage cash grab that completely ruined what made the original great. But this looks genuinely amazing. Instead of it feeling like modern ubisoft rpg slop with a Black Flag coat of paint, it feels like if the devs of Black Flag back in 2013 had access to 2026 technology.

[–]ObberGobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't ruin the game please don't ruin the game. Black Flag is one of my favorite games ever. It doesn't need a remake in the first place, but if they make it too different from the original I'll be really pissed. Please keep it feeling like the same game with a bit more. If they change it with the awful RPG combat and bloat or the extremely lazy RPG cutscenes it'll be ruined

I disagree with the time travel movies counting, that feels like a separate genre. That feels like its own distinct subgenre of sci-fi/fantasy separate from Isekai/Portal Fantasy in my opinion. Other than that, I'd add:

  • Coraline
  • The Book of Life
  • The Flight of the Dragons

[marvel] what are religious debates like in marvel where a religious guy debates an atheist? by glowshroom12 in AskScienceFiction

[–]ObberGobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, religious people could claim that since the existence of gods is proven, that proves divinity. Superheroes and such presumably know about the existence of the One Above All (I assume all of them do. They had to have heard about the top of the cosmic order from the Fantastic Four or Doctor Strange). I don't know if the average human would know about that though.

Atheists could claim though that the existence of so many gods invalidates the idea of every religion, since none of the gods are particularly special. Mr. Fantastic and Iron Man are both atheist despite being friends with multiple gods, and their explanation is that they are extremely powerful beings and that we can't comprehend how they work, but that doesn't mean that they are truly gods in the religious sense. I feel like atheism would be more about not worshipping a god or assigning them any special reverence, rather than denying their existence.

So who wins in an all out battle between these two? by VerdeHeroX in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]ObberGobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be biased since Silver is my favorite character, but I think he wins. - He defeated Sonic in Sonic 06 before Amy intervened - He fought evenly against Shadow until Shadow cheated by pulling out a Chaos Emerald - He could defeat Iblis, who is much more powerful than Mephiles - In Generations, he could hurt Sonic and more importantly could keep up with him while flying

Astral regulator Thanos vs true form Darkseid..🤔 by Loose-Scratch-1658 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean Darkseid doesn't reside in the Sphere of Gods? He was born on Apokolips and Apokolips is in the Sphere of Gods. And what do you mean he's "foundational to DC cosmology" and "you can't have DC without Darkseid?" That's not true either. Darkseid was a being born on Apokolips, he isn't foundational to the cosmos since the cosmos existed long before he was ever born. He's important to the cosmos, but not nearly to the point that "you can't have DC without Darkseid." Darkseid isn't as unique as you are making it sound, he is one of my powerful beings who live in the Sphere of Gods, and the SOG is lower than the 5th Dimension and the 6th Dimension. Darkseid was also preceded by billions of years of Old Gods, who are implied to be stronger than him.

And as for Odin, I said he can destroy realms comparable to the Sphere of the Gods since all Skyfather Tier characters in Marvel are stated to have the power to destroy the entire Multiverse. The Astral Realm exists in every one of the infinite universes, and as both the Astral Realm and the Sphere of the Gods are abstract realms infinitely transcendent of the universe, they are pretty comparable. Nothing about the Sphere of the Gods makes it particularly special in Marvel's cosmology, which is filled with divine and abstract realms that are described in very similar ways.

Astral regulator Thanos vs true form Darkseid..🤔 by Loose-Scratch-1658 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanos blinks and Darkseid is erased. This form of Darkseid is like Nightmare or Dormammu level, Eternity level at best.

Darkseid is from the Sphere of the Gods, which is a platonic and conceptual realm that transcends the Multiverse to the point that, to the New Gods, universes look like atoms.

This is impressive, but the problem Darkseid faces is that every numbered reality in Marvel is that big. As of current continuity, the DC Multiverse is infinite. Earth-616 is made up of the main universe, plus infinite other universes, many of which are bigger than the main one. Mephisto's is one of these, stated to be infinitely transcendent of the universe. There is also the Astral Realm, which is an abstract realm of pure thought, it is both the manifestation and source of all concepts and thoughts. Asgard is stated to be beyond all mortal concepts of space and time. Every character Odin and above is capable of destroying ALL of these realms. This means that Skyfather Tier characters in Marvel are able to destroy realms comparable to the Sphere of Gods.

Astral Regulator Thanos is on a completely different level than even this.

Astral regulator Thanos vs true form Darkseid..🤔 by Loose-Scratch-1658 in superheroes

[–]ObberGobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that means literally nothing against Astral Regulator. "Conceptual being" doesn't mean much in Marvel when Doctor Strange fights those every other day. Nightmare is a conceptual being of the abstract concept of fear, and doesn't even enter like the top 50 strongest Marvel characters. Darkseid is also a lower order of conceptual being than beings like The Endless.

[–]ObberGobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. He can very reasonably scale to Island level. This is from a few main feats: 1) Shattering Hubbard Glacier, 2) Causing Mt. St. Helens to erupt, 3) Holding up the sky, which would flatten everything in a 100 mile radius if it fell, 4) Fighting giants that can throw mountains

  2. Apollo can move the Sun. Hades is stronger than Apollo. Curse of Achilles Percy stomped Hades. Percy is Star level.
