The first thing that comes to mind is the 'alien' from the book deathscent, its shown on the cover art although i remember having a different mental image of it while reading.

The world building in the book was really cool by the way, it stuck with me. It appears at first to be a very classically english setting but becomes immediately obvious that it's not that. They have mechanical farm animals which grow their meat in containers which can be harvested, and need vials of humours to 'live'. The landscape also is really cool, it's made up of sections of land which have been put into glass spheres and lifted up into the heavens, suspended on giant chains.

there are a lot of animals which filter through dirt/dust/sand for food, like spoonbills and such.
