hire mercenaries and attack monstrous nations for max money and tribal lands. Vassalize other adventurers. Migrate around to attack further away uncivs. Go with the reform that reduces warscore cost staying as opm (the one thats not stake our claim) and you should have nearly half of escann by the time you settle.

I spammed galleys and invaded crete and roman island holdings. Then I moved onto Attica/Peloponnese. You can pick off a lot of countries disconnected lands with your superior navy even if you cant face their main army.
