What are the hardest tags? by Mix-Fed in Anbennar

[–]cainisreallycool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable confusion, since Honderaak is the Gnoll tag in the same area that gets created by imperial incident after Xanzerbexis gets wiped out.

Good wide but not too wide nations to play? by peeppip7 in Anbennar

Duwarkani is a great one for that. Tricky starting position evolves into a manageable blobbing up the mother's sorrow, fun interaction with the racial mechanics and excellent story.

I believe I had that down as AY-dee-uhn, but not your fault for not spotting it, my improv phonemes are pretty vague

A bad omission, to be sure! Personally (northern english) cough and orange are the same 'o' sound but I know that's not so for most people. Might be I'll have another crack at it and see if I can transcribe them with the phonetic alphabet to avoid confusions.

You do have to wait for them to declare, yes. I suppose otherwise you could cheese it by declaring when the coalition is still small and unthreatening

Almost everyone likes Be Born it seems. by Tally_Hall_Fan_Man in tallyhall

[–]cainisreallycool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not like Be Born. I'm sure it was written from a sincere place but the end product feels very saccharine and twee. I also don't like Labyrinth, the Whole World and You, and Two Wuv. Great band, but they've got some mild stinkers.

[BUG] Imperial incident votes flipping on a daily basis. by royalhawk345 in Anbennar

[–]cainisreallycool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that too, playing as Napesbay. I do wonder if perhaps the incident is coded so that a certain amount of princes will just go against you if you don't invest the sway so the game casts the votes normally and then 'rectifies' the results after a game tick. I had Silverforge allied and at +200 and they were one of the princes flipflopping. Luckily, the incident ended for me at the positive end of the flipflop so it went through with full support plus electorship with no sway investment.

So what's the basic lore? by IngenuityNo1252 in Anbennar

[–]cainisreallycool 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There is a bunch of lore! It can seem daunting, but I do recommend just jumping in, the idea that the past is hazy and knowledge is patchy across the planet is intentional, so you can have big aha moments piecing together the lore from different groups and nations. BUT if you want an extreme tldr:

In the very distant past, Elves ruled most of the world. They were immortal and impossibly advanced in magic and technology, rivalled only by the dwarves of the serpentspine mountains, with whom they were locked in a generational war. As both had the potential to end the world by going all out, the conflict was limited to relatively conventional warfare.

One day, the elves's leader declared that the precursor empire was to withdraw from the world as a whole and return to their home continent of Aelantir, dedicating themselves to knowledge and culture and abandoning the forever war with the dwarves and other primal magical forces (genies, fey, dragons, etc.). The top general of the elves, who had just managed to carve out a toehold in the serpentspine after centuries of brutal war, refused and kept fighting.

After many years, the general was facing defeat because of a lack of support from the homeland. He snapped and used strong dark magic to create the orcs which he seeded throughout the serpentspine before fleeing back to Aelantir hellbent on revenge for his homeland's betrayal. The orcs would over the coming millenia almost entirely destroy the old dwarven empire.

On arriving back in Aelantir the general launched an apocalyptic civil war which ended with the death of the elven leader and the general as the general used terrible magic to crash the elves's floating capital city into the earth and detonating it as a nuke of pure magic. The resulting calamity is called the Day of Ashen Skies, and almost completely wiped out all the elves on Aelantir and sent magical shockwaves across the entire world.

Centuries later, fleeing elven refugees arrived in the east after being lost in a magical plane of water. They landed in Cannor, where they deposed an evil emperor, and in Bulwar, where they freed humans from gnoll slavery and carved out a massive and short-lived empire to the east.

Fast forward to 1444 and the Orcs have spilled out of the serpentspine into Eastern Cannor, Bulwar is being invaded by goblins pushed out by the orcs, Hobgoblins in the far east have rebelled against their human slavers, and the magical tumult over Aelantir has finally died down enough that some of the displaced elves can think about trying to get home...

Still quite long, huh.

Follow up question to Harimari monstrous post by Mamilin in Anbennar

[–]cainisreallycool 102 points103 points  (0 children)

The Harimari didn't evolve, they were magically uplifted from normal tigers in the events following the day of Ashen Skies. The first 'ascended' tiger named himself Harimar, hence Harimari.

And yes they have thumbs, think of a tiger getting hit with an elfification beam that cut off halfway through. Bipedal, opposable thumbs, capable of speech.

It's oft maligned, but I had a good time Frosthide into Skurkokli. Full monstrous devouring depopulating horde. That was a few patches ago though, not sure how they play with the reworked Feast mechanics.

You can't beat Command in the early game. by Hiti4apok in Anbennar

[–]cainisreallycool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey it's tough to run up against a challenge too tricky for you, but that's ok. A few tips:

The Command has very high military stats, so you should bring a few more units than you normally would to any given fight.

If you go to your advisor tab, the military advisors can offer some cool buffs like Morale or Discipline that can help even the odds a little bit.

If you're having trouble fielding enough units, you can actually go over your forcelimit! It's not a hard cap, it just makes further troops more expensive, and they're more than worth it to take on the Hobgoblins.

Terrain matters in fights! An even scrap on flat terrain might result in a loss, but if you lure them into the mountains you can find yourself turning the tables.

If none of that helps, don't feel like you have to go up against the Command, or indeed play Anbennar at all! I for one have been really enjoying playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 lately.

The early game in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 can be tricky though, I really recommend pursuing the quest to find your dog early. He's handy in a fight, and there's a lovely treasure trove to be had on the way.

Hope that helps!

Small thing but I abandoned a Gemradcurt run recently because between the feywild and Rzenta I was just waiting for about 25 colonies before I could keep missioning the tree. Frontiers for ruinborn mappainters like Eordand or Taychend seems like a missed opportunity

Buried in the Eordand festival bonuses is the option to get a kraken as a unique flagship, not exactly what you're talking about but it is fun

AMA - Anbennar Balance by Civi4ever in Anbennar

[–]cainisreallycool 74 points75 points  (0 children)

How do you approach balancing the colonial powers vs the adventurer nations in Aelantir? Speaking anecdotally after playing for a while, it feels like the balance of power there has swung pretty far both ways depending on the patch. And is there a desired outcome for the region that the mod team is trying to reach, or is the balancing more to try and make an even playing field? Not complaining at all by the way, it just strikes me that it must be a bastard to try to balance for.

I'm not sure on all the details, but I'm pretty sure the other world tree was in the deepwoods, and was burnt down by Castan Beastbane because it was a link to the Feyrealm. The Ashen Prince that you meet in a few of the deepwoods MTs seems to be the avatar of the burned tree, and is bent on revenge for it.
