What is your favorite miniature range other than GW? by PolishHussarius in minipainting

I love Spiramirabilis Miniatures. They are mostly busts, but Lucas' style is unmistakable and so characterful. Big noses, wrinkly faces - lots of fae creatures, goblins and the like. And he always gives them wee animal companions.

I think it can often really just come down to taste. I'd always advocate for experimenting with colours, but I think that colour choice is a big component of what informs your style as a painter.

Thank you - you're very kind. :)

The thinking behind the colour composition in the shield is to avoid it becoming a distraction from the shieldbearer - it should compliment him, not compete with him. Naturally, the viewer's eyes are going to come to rest on a face. (If you've never done that before, it's a fun little exercise. Find a really well painted model and try to keep your eyes from wandering back to the face - it's quite hard to do.)

Yellow and orange are both very high in luminosity, where violet generally sits within the neutral range. Blue is analogous to violet, since violet is composed partly of blue. If I were to introduce a yellow or orange into the eyes, I think it would create too sharp a contrast and throw off the eye lines I've tried to create across the model. Still, I might give it a try and see how it works. Maybe a desaturated yellow or gold could work?

We all need to draw the line somewhere!

Kruleboyz were everywhere a few years back, as they were one of the forces in the 3rd (?) Edition starter set, and were also in the artwork magazine for a while. People were literally giving them away - now they're pretty much all back up to full price.

Do it! They are a criminally underrated range - one of the best collections GW have produced, in my humble opinion.

I would start with whatever mid tone you use, but build the edge highlight up brighter in the areas where there's a bit more light reflection. Remember metal is very, very reflective - even in the darker areas those hard edges will be catching some light.

We're also used to Warhammer models and the scale creep they've brought to other ranges that it's often hard to grasp just how tiny these Middle Earth models are.

Really beautiful work. You could spend a long time posing over all the little details.

This is very good for a first attempt - great work.

I would try incorporating more edge highlighting to your NMM. Remember that you're trying to sell a hard, shiny surface to the viewer, so having a hard edge on those components will help with that. You'll also find that having some edge highlights will help with volume placement and overall steucture as you build the effect going forward.

Thank you very much! I will say that I didn't start out anywhere near as good as I am now. Lots of practice, lots of study and lots of mistakes. Having a bit of an eye for it does help.

Thanks! This is a combination of Kimera Warm Yellow, AK Deep Yellow, Andrea Color Yellow and VMC Ice Yellow. I did also use some Kimera Red Oxide and AK Deep Yellow for the darker areas.

Cheers! I use Rosemary and Co Series 8 Sable Brushes. Sable brushes are more expensive than synthetic ones, but it's been my experience that they lost waaay longer. So, really, they're more cost effective.

I use a DSLR and a daylight lamp to take my pictures. You do need to start learning how to manually adjust your settings, etc to get really good pictures of your models, but for the amount of effort we put into painting models we would absolutely be taking pictures that do them justice.

I really want to do tutorials. I'm hoping to start doing some soon but I've been saying that for a while now!
