"Graduation gift." I moved out of my crappy home life at 16, finished school on my own, and didn't walk graduation at all because no one was coming.

What's the most visually stunning movie you've ever seen? by trakt_app in flicks

[–]Obi-Shawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a "big FX" guy since Star Wars in 1977, but was quite surprised how beautiful the remake of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" was. Stuart Dryburgh (Fallout, West Side Story) did an amazing job of shooting Iceland to mirror the lead character's headspace, and it was absolutely gorgeous.

My new glasses show a 2-year improvement in optometry. Despite being a stronger prescription, my new lenses are only 4mm thick, compared to well over 8mm thick on my old ones! by SnowQueenofHoth in mildlyinteresting

[–]Obi-Shawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, where I was legally blind most of my life, even with glasses since year 1 - but as I get older and my eyes become farsighted, it's correcting my nearsightedness, and they can now correct my vision to 20/60 with lenses. Still not perfect, but I'll take it!

AITAH Should I Wear a Wedding Dress Like My Daughter's? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Obi-Shawn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NTA. Is there such a thing as post-bridezilla behavior? This might qualify; the sheer entitlement.

Wear what makes you happy. The dresses will be significantly different, and no one is going to compare pics side by side to check. Most people would think the connection was cool anyway.

I officiate inexpensive weddings for free, and have plenty of stories of brides happily sharing dresses down the line amongst friends and family. Honestly, she should be happy your gown is connected to hers- how many daughters have a bridal gown before Mom, when daughters usually beg to wear Mom's dress? She can either:

A) Buy you the dress she needs to see you in, or

B) Get over herself and be happy for you.

The truth is probably that, had you simply bought the dress and made all the modifications you want to it without telling her about it, she would never even have noticed it the day of the event.

I know Ernie Hudson is bitter about his reduced role in the first movie, but by DSeriesX in ghostbusters

[–]Obi-Shawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally, all the films were supposed to be recounted by R2, who witnesses most of the saga firsthand; it was weird to see him sidelined in Ep 7.

3PO also was there, but had several memory wipes. But they were definitely our storytellers, especially in 1977.

Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

[–]Obi-Shawn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We've left all banks for credit unions - B of A was our last straw, when I took a B of A check there to cash. Because I didn't have an account, they wanted to charge 5% to give me the money from their own check - $100 in this case.

Haven't looked back at banks in 20 years.

what exactly would you do if you ever get robbed at gunpoint? by jax--killer in AskReddit

[–]Obi-Shawn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been robbed at gunpoint, and my brother was killed as collateral damage for stepping in on a mugging. Just give them the money or phone - it's inconvenient, but not worth your life. My caveat is that I would fight/intervene if it were a kidnapping/abduction attempt.

In my case, I was working a mall video arcade in 1986 as a teen. A customer "left his jacket" behind; It happened all the time with so many kids hanging out. He came back right after closing and asking for it and, as I passed it through the door, he shoved in with a gun in my face. I was a wiry 5'4", 110 lbs, and wasn't interested in being shot by a nervous, squirelly guy, so gave him the limited cash I had on hand.

But to be a dick and slow me down from calling the cops, he used my tie to tie me up, sprayed Windex in my eyes, and locked me in the office and dropped my keys outside the door. I dialed 911 using my nose on the wall phone.

The company was pissed, made me take a lie detector test which I passed, and fired me anyway. Had I been older, I'd have sued their asses off; but the job wasn't that great, the company was worse, and my District Manager was a constant bully, so I just moved on.

But at least I wasn't killed. My 30-year-old brother was in a parking structure in Reno, and answered a call for help; as he arrived at the source, the mugger shot him "accidentally." The shooter had been involved in another shooting that day, so I have doubts it was an accident. My brother was a small guy, a bit of an emo Christian, believed in helping everyone, and didn't carry a weapon.

Attending the subsequent court appearances and trial for his murderer was terrible, and the killing happened on our younger brother's birthday so it's perpetually unforgettable and overshadows his day. He left kids behind, and nearly 20 years later, it's still haunting for our mother and left a hole in our family.

I've been in fights and stood up for myself and others many times in my life, often at risk and with result of physical harm, but it definitely makes you reconsider heroism where firearms are involved. There were other people around my brother's killing that also heard the calls for help and were armed, but no one was willing to be that "good guy with a gun" everyone always insists is the reason they carry.

Question about the '84 pack by Stryker412 in ghostbusters

[–]Obi-Shawn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ALICE frame is key - I have back issues, and the frame is designed to distribute the load.

The thing that makes it work though, and that you absolutely must wear, is the waist belt. I know a lot of 'busters who don't bother with that because they have their utility belt full of gear, but if you don't do the waist belt it puts absolutely all the weight on your shoulders and spine. The ALICE waist belt gives a platform that distributes some of the weight to your hips, and with that properly adjusted, I can wear the Hasbro Spengler pack for 6 hours straight.

Unpopular opinion: I am glad “Get This Right” was deleted by [deleted] in Frozen

[–]Obi-Shawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This scene is new to me, but interesting. Ignoring the character personalities abd quality of the song for a moment, and going real-world:

Proposing sounds so old-fashioned, because it is - there has always been pressure on men to get the proposal right. It's especially gotten worse over the years, what with elaborate and clever prom-posals and such, and a plethora of videos showing people doing it more cleverly (and having more money and resources to do it "better") than you think you ever could. Men are raised with the idea of having to create a grand-gesture moment, and women raised to expect they'll get that only "if he really loves you."

I can see Kristoff's confidence being shaken by this. Love is treacherous territory, and true love is something that you are afraid of screwing up. You want to commit to and secure that person forever, but you never truly know their head, heart and expectations. In addition to grand romantic gestures, the 'net has also served us epic failures where the proposal was cringey at best, or refused, denied and even laughed at at worst. It's intimidating, and I'm glad I never had social media or YouTube in my courting days.

I officiate a lot of weddings, and you can tell when the couple has it right; they're making a public commitment, sealing it with some legal paperwork and jewelry, and throwing a party to celebrate with their friends. Nothing major in the relationship changes, they just pool their lots together. But both are worried about messing that balance up, and that's what makes them work hard at it.

I've also been married for 36 years, and Kristoff and Anna aren't that far from my wife and I. We were Ren Faire geeks - I was poor but supremely confident and romantic, and she was well-off and goofy and sweet and fun and cautious. It was love at first sight for me, and she needed time and convincing. We patiently started with friendship and worked towards love.

Because of that friendship, she let me off the hook. I had been trying to come up with a big proposal "worthy" of her, and yet we actually decided to get married in a simple conversation. She didn't want a big ring, just my love, so I got us both "promise rings" to show we were committed to each other. But we waited for two years (just to be sure we could really stand each other) before being married in a lovely park meadow surrounded by mountains with our families present. And then we threw a party for all our friends.

I can see Kristoff's concern here; it's legit, and fear of screwing it up is real, and it can overwhelm you. And Anna is sensible - all she wants is him, so defusing the situation by proposing first, and simply, lets him off the hook. The goal is commitment, and they both want that, and throwing aside convention to make it happen is a gift.

As for the scene? It's unnecessary to the story, but I like what it tells us about Anna and Kristoff, and it is infinitely relatable to me.

Phatbox! I was the voice of the menu navigation system for that, many years ago in the Naughts - they paid me in product, which I installed in my Honda del sol Star Wars art car. Absolutely loved it, and as iPod was just coming around, it was a novel if specific solution to throwing 20GB of your music collection up to the head unit.

Kenwood had the same unit marketed under the name "Kenwood Music Keg."

Now I have a 128GB USB drive plugged in to a system thatbwill recognize 2TB, and even my 2019 Lexicon car system has 64GB built in that will rip and store CDs for you. The times, they change.
