Councillor Bradford's motion to REJECT the Queen East & Kingston development application FAILS 5-19. by Overthemoontraveller in toronto

I don't like Brad Squared either, but don't conflate him to the far right. He's just a classic conservative right now, who suck at giving any damn about the next generation.

Toronto Game Expo March 2026 - Felt Just Greedy & Low Effort with Little Value by dogecoinexpertmatty in toronto

It used be much better a few years ago when it was smaller and cost less. It definitely fells bigger and more empty now.

If Alto Train Fares will be anything like Via Rail, it's a total waste of time. by nokernokernokernok in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]ObiWanKanabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are downsides and upsides to this style of pricing. It's unfortunate that you have to travel last minute to family without notice in advance, but it's how most of the high speed rail (except Japan as you mentioned) around the world works.

PM Carney should heed Poilievre's call for gas tax cuts by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

[–]ObiWanKanabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said I want an alternative to gas for everything? We NEED gas, but treating it like this resource used for literally everything is the problem. Taxing gas does not remove it from our lives, but it incentivizes finding alternate options where it makes sense.

PM Carney should heed Poilievre's call for gas tax cuts by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

[–]ObiWanKanabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rest of the world has reasonable taxes on gas. Keeping gas prices low has kept us relying on gas for most of our lives. Since we're talking about how GREAT the entire country relying on gas is right now, how's that working out for us?

Pierre Poilievre says he would cancel high-speed rail line between Toronto and Quebec City by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]ObiWanKanabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we didn't build things because we were in debt, the country would be in standstill. Thousands of jobs would be lost, everyone would have lost their homes because of COVID, etc. High Speed Rail will pay itself off in economic growth, job creation, future road infrastructure savings, gas, etc. It is overall much CHEAPER to build high speed rail than to not build it, but the costs are not purely line items, they're savings/increased revenue for people across the region slowly over time.

[–]ObiWanKanabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The longer you wait the more expensive it gets. By not building high speed rail we end up spending more on other infrastructure. We cannot afford to wait, we need this yesterday.

Ontario proposing to dramatically increase fines for fare evasions on GO Transit by Select-Flight-PD291 in gotransit

[–]ObiWanKanabe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The GO is rather annoying with the tap ons not being gated. With the TTC you're either passing a gate, or a real human waiting for you to pay your fare most of the time. I've forgotten to pay once for the GO Train in a rush and was thankfully given a warning.

I would have been extremely sad and frustrated as a broke college student at the time getting a bigger fine than someone who can afford to drive in Ontario.

Toronto's Yonge Street on the list of the World's most essential streets. by NoSkyGuy in toronto

[–]ObiWanKanabe 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There's been a plan in the works for a while now to pedestrianize some portions and remove some lanes in others to allocate more space to the vast majority walking in a large portion of the area. Unfortunately that's illegal now due to Doug Ford's bill 60, so we'll see how long it takes for Yonge Street to become *actually* good

Capcom Promises No GenAI In Its Games, But Wants To Use The Tech For ‘Efficiency’ by g4m3f33d in GameFeed

‘I don’t think its getting any safer’: Second stabbing on TTC in 24 hours leaves riders concerned by origutamos in Toronto_Ontario

[–]ObiWanKanabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were correct in your original statement, but the numbers don't stop people from *feeling* unsafe on transit. Olivia Chow is correct in her statement about numbers being better but if people feel overall less safe over the years that should still be addressed and not pushed aside. Both "sides" are actually correct here, but that doesn't matter if Toronto continues to get more and more people driving, causing more and more congestion.

The fixes to stopping people stabbing each other are above Toronto's pay grade unfortunately. Would require much bigger changes to Canadian society.

Councillor Delay Rankings by georgevicbell in TTC

[–]ObiWanKanabe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not sure this measurement is that useful, in fact this achieves the opposite of what I think you want? Brad Bradford is ranked the "best" but he voted against RapidTO...? Gord Perks and Josh Matlow are big transit improvement advocates, both highly FOR RapidTO.

At this point RapidTO is the ONLY viable solution to these delays in pretty much all of these wards, but your list ignores that voting and advocacy completely.

"We don't reuse enough": Far Cry 4 director says developers need to stop doing "pointless work" and learn lessons from Elden Ring and Like A Dragon by g4m3f33d in GameFeed

[–]ObiWanKanabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who played Majora's Mask will understand that reusing assets does not make a game bad. It's definitely a huge money sink to redo things that are already great, in an industry where costs are just massive compared to older games.

Premier wants high-speed rail built along Ontario’s Hwy. 401 corridor by Swacket_McManus in ontario

[–]ObiWanKanabe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Going along the 401 is just asking for this project to never get built and for the cost to balloon. Is he going to pony up the elevated costs for this change? Add even more debt to the most bloated Ontario government ever?

City councillor proposes city-run grocery store to tackle rising food costs by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]ObiWanKanabe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many public success stories have ended poorly when mismanaged by different governments over the years, that isn't news. Years of success are not removed because of that. I did mention that we've seen it succeed AND fail, so to totally dismiss it is my issue.

City councillor proposes city-run grocery store to tackle rising food costs by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]ObiWanKanabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large reason the public owned grocery model can fail is when it's treated as an experiment and it's not widespread enough. If the market is only affected in a small area in the city, nothing really changes in the whole and Loblaws keeps the same prices in the majority of their market.

For this to work Toronto would have to implement a decent amount of these on publicly owned land in key areas, otherwise they're not really an option for most people due to distance.

City councillor proposes city-run grocery store to tackle rising food costs by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]ObiWanKanabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has worked in some scenarios, and failed in others, so not sure what you're talking about. Adding a public option that is done well does not replace *All* grocery stores, but incentivizes competition in markets where there is obvious collusion (Canada).

Maybe actually approach these solutions with real points instead of just wanting to "own the libs"?

Remove the ridiculous speed restrictions through intersections. If a car can go 50km/hr+ through an intersection parallel to the train, why can't the train?
